I’m still hoping for a rescue.

Did anyone else notice that this is the second search and rescue mission in about as many days involving people who are apparently not from the area during a time when the public is still encouraged not to travel more than necessary. Are hotels and campgrounds still closed to short term stays?

As to the question… I’ve been seeing a LOT of tourists lately. I’d say just as many as a typical year. Out-of-state license plates everywhere, and they’re all driving like they’ve never been here before. If we had a police department actually interested in doing something other than asset forfeitures, they should be investigating where all these people are staying.

I’ve got out of state plates and I’ve lived here for four years. It doesn’t automatically mean tourists.

Charlotte if you give me a way to contact you I can give you some information of what transpired. I was there. The young woman he was with stopped me and asked for help and I directed EMS to the location. I did not see the event occur but I was there before and after.

Don’t sit around waiting for the sheriff to find him. Better off getting out there and looking yourself.

Because it says “ Victorville man” doesn’t necessarily mean he’s not living here. While I was in college I always kept my Humboldt address. Just sayin’.

Once again Guest, I must agree with you as I did the same thing.
One reason that I finally changed my address with the DMV was because of vehicle smog certification and certain exempt counties.

Charlotte, I have been thinking of this young man and his family since I came upon the rescue efforts yesterday. I said a prayer and wept as I watched as I have a 22 yr old son myself and I can only imagine the anguish you and the rest of his family are going through.

Lots of out of towners took rental homes in Trinidad for the duration, they wander around the McK Safeway complaining about the product mix and stocking levels, then get into their very expensive SUV and drive back to safety. So here, I opened up a whole new topic for the haters to get onto to, go for it. (And Kym, take a nap, you deserve some quiet time)

People someone’s child is missing. Could you please all stay on topic and stop worrying where people are from or not from. As far as I can tell, for now, we are All stuck here on earth together. I have to believe the creator had some reason to put us all here at this time other than to argue about place, race, and the like.

Thursday about 230ish… 3 boats from Trinidad responded to a man in the water radio call from the Trinidad Harbor bait shop. The Charter boat Shellback, Reel Therapy and the Trinidad water taxi all responded we met the state park life guard paddling on her surfboard in college cove and she said the victim was north of us at Elk head we motored up there and arrived just as the Coast guard helicopter arrived on scene. The 3 boats searched the surrounding rocks and waters while the rescue life guard search the rocks tight to the head. the Coast Guard helo was hovering back and forth searching about 50 ft above the water as you can see in above pics. The boats stayed around for probably 1.5 hours searching but finding nothing. The sheriffs and fireman were watching from the bluffs. When we left the coast guard and lifeguard where still at it searching. I hope they they are able to find the young man today (Friday) and bring some closure for his family. He certainly had a lot of people looking for him ASAP

The ocean here is beautiful, but tragically unforgiving. Most of the old-timers I know that were born and raised here would not consider swimming in it, as it has claimed so many lives over the years. That’s not a knock against visitors, just an FYI for everyone. Violent surf, sneaker waves, jagged rocks, sharks, water cold enough to cause hypothermia,… there are many hazards that are not apparent at first glance. Please keep a respectful distance between yourself and the water, unless you are a surfer, ab diver, or kayaker that fully understands the risks and is willing and prepared to take them.

So you know. This man was not in or near the water on purpose. He fell from the cliff.

I do understand that. My comment was not intended as criticism of the victim, merely a note of caution for everyone that enjoys the shore. I tried to make that clear with my second sentence.

The water is so cold in all of Northern California that most people don’t live long enough to get hypothermia. The cold causes humans to loose muscle control then sink and drowned. I learned this in a sailor’s “Safety at Sea” class. It happens so quickly that one can’t expect a “man overboard” to be able to help at all with his own rescue. It’s also possible to have a heart attack from sudden immersion in cold water. Be careful near the ocean here! My heartfelt sympathy goes out to the young man’s family.

Long story short. Many years ago, my extended family had a picnic at Bean Hollow Beach, 20+ miles south of San Francisco. There were signs all over the beaches about staying out of the water due to a very strong undertow. One of my aunts was an Olympic swimmer a few years before. She decided that she was a good enough swimmer to go in. Wrong. Before long, she was being pulled out to sea. Her husband, my dad, several cousins, etc. formed a human chain and eventually were able to pull her in. Aunt Win never again went into the Pacific Ocean. just plain old swimming pools.

Accidents are so unreal. In movies there is music that suggests something may happen. In real life there is no music. Often the aftermath of an accident is incredibly silent as well, which can seem even more cruel. You want to shake the silence for answers or a change of events. So sorry your family has to endure this. Our community is feeling for you as you can see from the comments.

It is with great sorrow that we are all reading this. I pray that AJ has been found. My hear goes out to his family and friends. Yes, Joan that is true, I want to shake the silence for answers. Mother Nature, sweet Mother, may we have a merciful answer.
