Scott Adair, Humboldt County’s Economic Development Director, Gives Update on Our Economic Numbers in This COVID Minute

Scott Adair, Humboldt County’s Economic Development Director tell us in this COVID Minute that part of our ongoing effort in the Emergeny Operations Center is to track the adverse impact that COVID-19 has had on our economy. To date over 11,000 unemployment claims have been filed. Over 2400 jobs lost and over 30 million in revenue losses has been reported from businesses.

But, he said, we track the good news, too. There’s a lot of effort in the community right now. Local banks and financial institutions and their partner agencies together have leveraged 100 million dollars in resources to go to local businesses. And our local job market have assisted over 2000 workers who have found themselves unemployed.

How are our hospitals doing? Were there layoffs? Are they going to be swamped now due to the backlog of putting off normal treatments?

30mm lost but 100mm in “resources”? I call bullshit. I know of at least 3 small business that were denied funding or the opportunity to refinance their debt by local banks. No doubt that 100mm number includes things like SBA staff time for “consulting” which does nothing to pay the bills.

“To date over 11,000 unemployment claims have been filed. Over 2400 jobs lost and over 30 million in revenue losses has been reported from businesses.”

2400 jobs lost and 11000 say they lost their job. I may not be the sharpest at math but WTF?

All that I need to know is how much Sales Taxes have been collected, then I can tell you how well Humboldt is doing.

It takes more than minute to explain the condition of our economy.

Reopening in a limited fashion should have been permitted after a 30 day standdown! Fewer jobs lost and much less resistance. The data is there.
