Has anyone heard if there is a plan to address firefighter accommodations for crews working on forest fires? Giant fire camps in a pandemic aren’t a good idea for keeping the firefighter healthy. This is a big worry for me right now and I would be willing as a backcountry land owner to accommodate and feed some crews so they could be spaced out.
Call Cal Fire and offer, be sure to describe the property and features they may need – potable water, for example.
I contacted the CalFire RPF I work with out of the Redding headquarters, he said “I am sure someone is working on it”. Also, my area would be the Feds and I have no contact as far as I know.
Yeah, the FS is working on it too. A very sticky wicket. Fire camps are notorious for spreading sickness in a good year. But, how do you fight a big campaign fire without an ICP and a camp where people can shower, eat, and bed down?
Also, firefighters do a lot of moving around throughout the season. If a fire breaks out in Mad River, do we want firefighters (and caterers, and showers, and all the support folks) coming in from all over the country, maybe even all over the world?
These are tough questions and I don’t see any easy answers other than just let it burn. But trust me, the FS is thinking hard about it.
