Search and Rescue for Missing Hydesville Man Ongoing

Marc CastagnettoPress release from the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office:

The Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO) Special Services Division is searching for a missing Hydesville man in the Mad River area.

On April 4, 2020, at about 2 p.m. the Trinity County Sheriff’s Office (TCSO) received information that missing person 56-year-old Marc Andrew Castagnetto had possibly crashed his truck off-road in the western area of Trinity County near Eight Mile Road. Castagnetto reportedly contacted a friend following the crash, who then notified law enforcement. Following search efforts by Trinity County Sheriff’s deputies, the HCSO was contacted to assist at about 8:53 p.m. Saturday night due to the search area’s close proximity to Humboldt County.

On April 5, HCSO Special Services deputies began a thorough ground search for Castagnetto in the Mad River area. During their investigation, deputies received more information indicating Castagnetto was likely in Humboldt County during the time of the crash. Upon receiving this information, the HCSO took over the investigation and search for Castagnetto.

Today, April 6, search teams responded to the Dinsmore area near the Trinity County line to continue searching for Castagnetto. The HCSO has requested the assistance of the California National Guard to provide air support in the search. As of this afternoon, deputies have not located evidence of Castagnetto or his vehicle within the search area.

Castagnetto is described as a white male adult, age 56, with brown/gray curly hair and green/hazel eyes. He is approximately 5 feet 11 inches tall and 200 pounds.

Castagnetto’s vehicle is described as an older model dark green Toyota pick-up truck that is lifted and has 35-inch tires. The pick-up has no tailgate and has a large aftermarket front bumper.

Anyone with information regarding Castagnetto’s whereabouts should contact the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office at 707-445-7251 or the Sheriff’s Office Crime Tip line at 707-268-2539.

Has anyone searched from the West side of Mad River coming from the trailer park off 36?
Since the river crossing is impossible, he may have come from that direction and slipped off the road.
Why would he go all the way to the top of the mountain and then finally turn onto 8 mile? Doesn’t make sense. Good luck

When I typed in Skull Camp, eight mile rd, Trinity County in CalTopo maps it zoomed in towards Hayfork divide, All the way out by Hayfork. Nothing on the USGS layer called “skull camp” over there…(?)

AHH.. Eight Mile Ridge, Forest Service rd # 2N12.
Rd. from Trailer Park to the Mad River and up the other side North: 1N15. I would not skip looking along that rd. If you were coming from Hydesville, and wanted to get off the pavement, you’d hit that first. Any indication how far, or long he drove? Would the ‘for sale” sign indicate he was still on private lands?

OOPs forgot to hit save on edit. 1N15 has gated spurs on the map 1N15 A through E. 1N15 continues upriver on North bank of Mad. The road up hill towards Eight Mile Ridge doesn’t seem to have a Forest Service number, and appears to be on private land. FS 1 also seems to be labeled 6N01, and connector to 2N12, on Eight Mile Ridge is 2N05, that hits 2N12 up high on ridge at “Skull Camp Trail”.
Just guessing he went off the road going down hill, seems more likely in snow in 4 wheel drive.

Googled property for sale in mad river.
It was mentioned he marked his accident location with a for sale sign he put against a tree. County line Creek Rd. had the most hits. Could he have been looking at property? 1706 County line Rd has coincidentally been recently listed on 4-2-2020. It would help to know the area he hung out at. Doesn’t seem like he would be likely to be wasting a lot of fuel so would be close to his camp as possible.
Also, could the hunters camp be the one across 36 from madriver rock lookout road? Is there any private on either of those roads?

For sale sign was probably not for a current listing since, apparently, there was no sign holder anywhere near it.

A helicopter was in the area for about an hour today. They either found him, or it didn’t happen on that road.

Googled Overson, there was a hit on the east side of Hettenshaw Valley. 8096 Ruth Zenia Road. Very near there devil’s backbone intersects Ruth zenia Rd. If that is near where he was staying? takes you to mad river rock lookout Rd. Devil’s backbone is Forest Service Rd. Se27. I think there are some hunters camps on that lookout Rd. He might have tried to return that way? If he had no registration he might have been on back roads. Might be hurt.

Any new info kym? Marc is a dear friend of my boyfriend’s. We think he could have been taking Eddie food at the end of 8 mile road, but Eddie wont answer to cops. His house is hard to get too, so we figured we’d go out There today and look, hoping both of them are ok. Eddie could have been with marc

How come it appears the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Posse of Search and Rescue volunteers don’t appear to have been called. They were sent to the Weitchpec recently. How come not this time? They have skills and training the deputies don’t have. Maybe Kym could do some digging for us.
