Snow Is Falling and a 57-Year-Old Man Hasn’t Been Heard From Since He Crashed His Pickup Yesterday

Marc Castagnetto

Marc Castagnetto probably weighs about 40-50 pounds less than in this photo. His hair is short and curly and his hairline is receding. [Image from his Facebook page has been altered to remove a child]

Marc Castagnetto hasn’t been heard from since he crashed his ’86 Toyota pickup in the backwoods of western Trinity County off Eight Mile Road on Saturday morning. He told a friend in a phone call he made soon afterwards that the truck went over an embankment while it was snowing heavily. He explained that he managed to scramble back on the road where he propped up a for sale sign he found against a tree so he would know where he went off. But, he told his friend, he was getting lost and was trying to make his way back to the truck where he had blankets.

Since then attempts to reach him have failed, said his friend’s daughter, Cassandra Overson. “I called and left a message,” Overson told us. “I said start a fire anyway you can…He hasn’t called anybody back.”

She said since about 3 p.m. Saturday, his phone has gone straight to voice mail.

Castagnetto said he told Overson’s dad that he was near a gate by a place known as Hunter’s Camp off the 8 Mile Road which is out Hwy 36 in the Mad River area.

But, she explained, “Mark is not originally from here–his geographics are probably off.” She said he might not be using the right names for places.

Overson said Castagnetto lives in his truck. He doesn’t have any close family in the area and he’s just been staying at the end of her parents’ driveway. He’s done that, she said for three or four months.

“He left there the night before,” she told us. “He likes to go off-roading and four-wheel driving.”

Overson said Castagnetto is about 5’11” tall and 57 years old. She said he had dark curly hair and a receding hairline. “Maybe green eyes,” she guessed. She said that he’s about 57 years old.

She said he drives a lifted ’86 model Toyota with 35 inch tires with extra large mud flaps, no tailgate, and an almost forest green/blackish paint color with a homemade front bumper.

“His truck hasn’t been found,” she told us even though there has been a search party. Overson said she got a call from a Trinity County Sheriff’s deputy this afternoon who told her they had to call off the search because the weather was getting bad again. “They can’t even find tire tracks,” she told us.

“The ambulance driver said [yesterday] there was like eight inches of snow,” she said. “And it’s still snowing…He wasn’t properly dressed for the snow.”

If you have any information, please contact the Trinity County Sheriff’s Office at (530) 623-2611.

There’s a lot of country out here. If you’re gonna get lost it’s a good idea to know where you are.

Yes, I understand the paradoxical nature of this statement.

Shoot If I lived closer i would start where he said- cause he was driving- he should know what area he was driving. His cell probably is out of juice – he’s probably back at his rig. Ide start looking there. Good luck.

I learned in back country Alaska to get in the habit of always having a whistle with me, those good ole PE whistles work great to scare bears as well as help get found. That shrillness is universal.

So hoping hes found ok!!!

And some flagging tape is light weight and good to have, at least some, on you always.

At least you will know for sure when you are walking in circles.

I like stars, I am not sure about Humboldt having a snow cat, but PG&E does if it is not being used. Their are some local snowmobiles which could get there without too much problem if the road is clear and not littered with downed trees too big to get around. I just pray that he is in his truck, and has enough blankets to keep warm.

Article says Hunters Camp, but maybe he was thinking of Skull Camp (off 8 Mile Ridge Road)?

you can survive a week without food and its not too too cold this time of year even in snow if you have blankets… I will say a prayer for him. I’ve definitely been snowed in for a time up in them hills. If he has food and is not badly injured, he’s got a good shot. Don’t stop looking and ping his location from the cell tower… They do that when investigating people for weed all day long 🙂

Ping the cellphones last location, law enforcement can do this with help of cell phone company, and triangulate his whereabouts, why hasn’t the CHP brought in a helicopter to search from the air, they use them foe cannabis, why not for missing persons? Priorities…

We (STVFD and Star) actually was called and looking at 12ish and went 8 mile county line cr as it was first and then we went FS route 1and south fork mint rd same time. After Fire fighter got stuck and chp also went up as far as possible we then got trinity search and rescue out about 3 and continue looking with forest service plow and rescue with multi equipment with tracks had to stop after dark and again Sunday. When there was two different locations buy name and snow and apparently he was not staying put it’s very hard to locate someone knowing where you go is important and if you leave always go the direction you came from or stay put . We can only wish him the best thank you volunteers Forest Service Trinity co search and rescue CHP and Humboldt co sheriff’s

Sure doesn’t sound great but with some blankets and basic emergency gear he has a fighting chance if found soon. I’m in no condition to search so all I can do is put positive thoughts into the universe for the family and hope he’s found soon

We have a cabin off 8 mile and a caretaker out there. We were out there over the weekend and it didn’t get a whole lot of snow and it melted pretty fast. The sheriff dept always gives up too fast. My dad is a tracker and lives out there, I’ll see if I can get this info too him and see what he can do.
