First SoHum Positive Test Speaks Out; She Says There Are More Positives in SoHum

Positive Covid TestAfter reading rumors posted on social media that the first person to test positive for COVID-19 in Southern Humboldt County was a retail worker, a woman contacted us telling us she was the first positive test and two people she was isolated with had now also tested positive and another was waiting on results.

The woman, who wishes to remain anonymous, said that she wanted to make sure that rumors didn’t keep people away from essential local services. She also told us, “I wanted people to know that [the first positive test in SoHum wasn’t] someone who has been running around town acting like it is no big deal because that is definitely not the case.”

The woman left the area with family to go to her daughter’s wedding before the Shelter-in-Place order came out and hurried back as the situation changed. “The wedding was also only 7 people. We didn’t have a huge gathering…We naively thought we wouldn’t get it…While we were gone, that’s when the ordinance came.”

She and family members came back on March 22 after flying through Chicago and San Francisco.

She said they were aware by that time they were at risk and put themselves in isolation as soon as they got back. “We got in our own vehicle out of the airport and came straight home,” she told us. “I even had to go the bathroom but we didn’t want to use a public restroom so we came straight home…Once we got back we self-quarantined…Thankfully, we have some really good friends bring groceries and leave [the items] at the gate.” She said that a family member “tossed” medicine over the fence.

She believes that they must have gotten COVID-19 in the airplanes or airport because no one else at the small wedding they were at is ill.

However, two more people in their group have tested positive. “One was my fiance,” she said. The other is a friend who lives on the same property. The woman’s son has tested negative and another person on the property is awaiting results of their test.

She wants the community to know “the only time we did go to town was to see the doctor and we didn’t leave our car.” She promises that they won’t be going out til they “know for a fact” they are negative. “We are in contact with the health department,” she said.

She added that COVID-19 can affect people in ways that they might not be aware of. Just yesterday she had to go to Redwood Memorial Hospital in Fortuna because she was worried because she was extremely dizzy.

They didn’t get out of the car though, she explained. “You drive up in the car and [the medical staff] come out fully suited up.”

She pointed out, “[The medical staff] want you to be really careful when you go the hospital. They are putting their lives on the line every time they are near us.”

Even though her group has been very careful to isolate, she says, she doesn’t want people to let down their guard. “Everyone should act like everyone has it anyway,” she said.

UPDATE: In answer to questions from readers, the woman told us that their friend caught COVID-19 from them. “There was a couple times we were too close,” she told us. “We realized it and moved apart but [I] guess that was enough. Or she might have touched a surface that [I] didn’t sterilize. [I’m] not really sure. We weren’t as careful the first couple days as we are now. [I’ve] done  a lot of research trying to figure out how to keep from spreading it.”

Thank you for being honest and telling the community your story. And thanks to the community for helping each other in these difficult times.

This story confirms that the government and airlines should have restricted air travel and closed airports a long time ago. And yet airlines are still running now, worldwide, with zero testing or protections to prevent the spread of disease. I’ll be looking forward to the first wrongful death lawsuit filed against the airlines.

There are some lawsuits developing in a county below us. It is not in the news yet.

Travellers broke Australia’s quarintine and brought it back, infecting others.

The lawsuits are not against the airlines, but against individuals who did not follow simple instructions.

So every flu season (6-8 months) we should stay home, collect government subsidies, not visit people, don’t go to work, don’t travel AND wear masks n gloves? Coronavirus’s are not going anywhere soon. Mother Nature has the answer for humankind to survive and live in peace with enough resources and well being to go around. The problem lays with me, you, and the other 8.5 billion of us, we are ignoring the answer…..

And what is the answer? We should all give up trying to help ourselves and others, and let Nature take its course? That just doesn’t work for me personally, nor for most other people. It’s far more passive than sheltering in place to protect ourselves and our loved ones, with or without those fabulous government subsidies. I mean, I’m sure I can live a good life on a one-time gift of $1200, no need to lift a finger.
I have known libertarians who were extremely intelligent and thoughtful people — and that was their problem. They were so smart and thought so much about how the world ought to be that they completely lost touch with the reality of human nature. (Strangely enough, extreme socialists have the same problem. Both ideas really ought to work, but they don’t — because people are imperfect by nature.) I try to listen to them respectfully, hoping to learn something new, but this, FanofGuest, is an extremely stupid attitude, and discredits your intelligence.

I would say extreme attitude. I don’t know about stupid. I don’t have the answer, I’m just as willing to help out someone in need as the next. Survival of loved ones surpasses all else.
The human population will double in less than hundred years. Is that a problem? My guess is it’s not going to help one bit. I don’t have answers but depopulation is a must if we expect to survive as a species. Look at the world around you, it’s cahngeing against us, not for us. We are compounding it ten fold by our very needs of survival. Extreme. Yes. Ignorant not to believe…… that’s stupid.

Maybe COVID-19 is only the beginning of even more devastating viruses. Viruses feed on what is available. More people more places for dinner. The more people live in close proximity the faster the coronaviruses can travel and mutate. Makes sense that New York was hit the hardest. Any wonder why “distance” is the one of only way to stop a virus. Corona diseases and other similar airborne pathogens will have a smorgasbord of over populated places to react their havoc. Riding the packed population train of life in the next 50 years at your local populated station. The Pandora’s box has been opened and according to legion the box can never be closed again.

Its just the latest! The City of Rome got down to 30,000 people around 5 or 600 AD from the plague. Around the late 1460s to early 1470s Europe losr 1/3rd of the population to plague. One of th he last plague outbreaks was in San Francisco in the early 1900s. Smallpox, Cholera, etc.
Of course this ain’t the last.

If women cared they would put the seat up. It’s difficult sometimes to get a proper stream going especially after really good sex. It’s not our fault, we grab, hold and center aim usually with a 92% success rate. It’s due to a poor design when one stream hits dead center and the other stream hitting the side rim. We immediately lean over quickly and get up on our tippy toes but it to late the damage is done.

for decades commercial nurseries have had sanitizing pads available for greenhouse doorways. They sanitize shoes and hooves. Doesn’t get every single germ but it really helps. Not so common with pot, but used in animal husbandry and flower nurseries.

They could use something like that but not as firm placed in the bottoms of trays. Problem is, people are discouraged from being creative problem solvers and people who are the heads of organizations are too specialized and insecure about anything outside of the box.

Air travel is perfect for spreading disease. Each hub, like Atlanta, S.F. or Paris gathers travelers from all these places, mingles everybody very effectively, then sends them out to more far off places. I traveled immediately before this really blew up in early Feb. I’m interested in getting tested for antibodies eventually, I never felt sick, but damn, there was one couple SO sick on that one flight! They took off for places unknown in Salt Lake…After the milieu at customs..
An interesting map I saw last night: Somebody gathered all the cell phone data from everybody out on a beach in Florida, then created another map of where all those phones went in the next week. The cluster of phones spread out all over half the country!

What this woman did was VERY SELFISH!!! We were well informed by mid March not to travel, that airports were a danger zone. I had numerous friends cancel trips at the BEGINNING of March. One was an older woman who hadn’t seen her grandkids in a couple of years another was to go to So Cal to see his sister, another a family reunion but they stayed here. But not this woman!!! She left and brought back this disease to our community…………

Yes it is Trump’s fault he chooses the FAA chairman. Very poor decision to not ban all international travel. He made such a poor decision that it is effecting directly the neighborhood he grew up. His racist viewpoint caused his decision to only ban travel from one area when we live in a global world, very narrow sighted. Then to compound the narrow sightedness is the lack of leadership in preventing the spread by allowing still, right now, citizens to fly in virul incubators to every city in the US of A. Clearly he could care less for the citizens since he chooses the stock market over we the people!

Trump was the first world leader to ban any flights and more bans followed. Maybe he should of funded some green deals that congressional leaders tried to sneak in and the relief stimulus might of not been delayed for 10 days with millions of jobs lost in the delay. Obamma has been out long enough, stop with that race card. Time to find a new deck!

That’s a party line cherry picked to create inaccuracy known as a lie. And even the linked article says it was pieced together from facts unknown at the time it was happening. It doesn’t mention for example that the US initiated health screening on January 17, 2020. And travel bans that Pelosi and democrats called “unamerican”.

But not to the Pissy Mariner who said:

Trump was the first world leader to ban any flights and more bans followed. Maybe he should of funded some green deals that congressional leaders tried to sneak in and the relief stimulus might of not been delayed for 10 days

Which is completely false.

But anyways, about your statement..

Health screenings on the 17th were not enacted by Trump.

And they were not enacted at all airports.

And they were not enacted on all travellers.

And they were weeks after other countries actions.

And what the fuck were these health screenings? People are still travelling today without temp. readings.

Trumps travel ban did absolutely very little, very late.

The response of Taiwan cannot be compared to the US in real logistics. They are an island nation with an area of about Maryland and a population the size of New York state.

With regards to the rest of your Trump complaints, hindsight is 20/20 and you have the advantage of having zero consequences to how you would run the country. Real people making hard decisions with real consequences and no play book should be given a little slack for being human.

Taiwanese are human.

And you can compare them to the US because our GDP next to Taiwan is like the Titanic compared to a canoe.

To say you can’t compare Government policies because of land mass comparisons is wholly absurd.

Not even hindsight in this case is 20/20. TRB has found a supported niche in Trump hating and will never have need for a reasoned exchange. The only goal in responding is to try to expose other readers to different ideas that are not so black and white. And expect the personal invective because it always comes down to the same rut- Trump is always wrong, and if anyone tries to say something slightly differently, they are just as bad. Yet, once sunk to that level, too much time can be wasted in another trek round the same ever deepening, circular rut. The real world is too confusing for those too attached to their rut- they can’t leave it.

It doesn’t matter where they were traveling to. A “low risk country” during the ramping up of a pandemic is like a peeing section in a swimming pool. One must still travel on a plane and move through airports. Thousands of people from all over the world move through airports every day. What in the hell was going through the minds of anyone traveling anywhere during that time? At that time I wanted my cousin to visit from out of the area and had enough sense about me to cancel his trip. No way I wanted to risk him bringing the virus not only to my home, but community. All that being said, for a fact, Humboldt and Mendocino heady bros and sisters, did travel to Spain to suck on dab rigs. Hell a Mendo company even held a hash competition and plenty of people posted stories and posts on IG while attending.

Hindsight is not so good either. “Close the airport” come the screams while not noting this woman drive back from San Francisco. A whole lot of people, especially when frightened, pick villains and then attack without any common sense like chicken peck other chickens to death over a spot of blood. Anyone who expects even most humans to act rationally is sure looking for disappointment.

Frankly this woman made a mistake in judging her safety in travelling. Obviously she did not deliberately choose to contract the virus. She says so herself, in hindsight, yet exposed herself to the slings and arrows of the blamers of the world because she sought to reassure scared people that she acted to avoid dragging others into her worries. I would tell her not to worry much about the criticism . There are always those who think in short bursts of emotional reactions, with little to no self examination, stopping at the first obvious object to blame. Panicked people are even worse, taking out their anxieties on others.

Well Mendocino has only had 4 cases for the last week and a half. I guess that’s cause no tests are being preformed in Mendocino.
Lake County 0, if you believe that.

Meanwhile there seems to be plenty of testing in Huffman’s Marin County.

Face it the top 1/3 of the state is California’s orphan and basically irrelevant to the politicians that only come here for what they can get, votes, taxes, fines & fees.

I have seen a lot of people not staying at home. I think that is big mistake. There has been a “little” good news from some places, but it is too few overall. California is ahead of most U.S. States in new people infections. That should tell people as the California Governor has stated this morning “Stay at Home!” It is way to early to think the virus is dying off. Dr. Fucia and the CDC is also saying stay at home for the next two weeks and maybe to the end of April. There is no indication the virus is slowing down. In fact, the opposite could be starting in California. If people are getting out because they think it is safe you could be the next statistic. We have made it this far and 14 more days to insure there is good data to say getting out would be safe would be worth the staying in the house.

This story is inspiring and I am so grateful they have been open to share the experience. The public concern and expectations of behavior have shifted incredibly rapidly. Our view point on travel, small dinner parties, and more has rapidly shifted. This is a store of people acting intelligently and responsibly. Their carefulness is just that, full of care for our community. It is more inspiring that neighbors and friends have been so will to shop and run errands so they may continue strict isolation. On top of that it shows how careful and helpful our healthcare providers are. We all need to pull together. It looks like we are. There is fear enough to go around, but we have courage. If, you are not afraid at this point, I doubt you have been paying attention. Courage is to act decisively and with determination in the face of fear. The most important message is all of us working concertedly together can stop these chains of transmission, an effort made incredibly easier by this person and her household. Lives were probably saved by their actions and I can’t thank them enough. I feel comforted and moved by this story. Stay strong! Thanks Kym.

Thanks, Kym for your continuous efforts to provide unbiased information. I appreciate the update on this individual and am grateful for her response to the typical small community gossip trail. A few things I was wondering about was her timeline since the virus, apparently, takes 4 to 14 days to manifest symptoms. When did she discover her first symptoms? Going back 14 days prior to her first symptom, was she still in So Hum and possibly contracted it there? What precautions did she take at the airport and during her flight? Most flights are almost empty. Just looking for helpful information.

Just so you know, 10% of cases experience symptoms after 14 days.

My symptoms developed on day 16.

The quarintine guidelines of 14 days need to be revised to 20.

my understanding, 97.5 % show symptoms at 12 days. Somewhere near 30% show no symptoms, ever. That’s is why the recommendation that we all wear masks, that way people with no symptoms but none the less are infectious will be masked.

You’re right, and I’m not sure if I’m wrong.

Look:

The median incubation period was estimated to be 5.1 days (95% CI, 4.5 to 5.8 days), and 97.5% of those who develop symptoms will do so within 11.5 days (CI, 8.2 to 15.6 days) of infection.

These estimates imply that, under conservative assumptions, 101 out of every 10 000 cases (99th percentile, 482) will develop symptoms after 14 days of active monitoring or quarantine.

https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/32150748/

I bolded the section that I don’t understand.

-What is “CI”?
-What is the implication of that range of days?

But the study says conservatives estimates make it a 1% figure of symptoms post 12 days.

10% may be liberal figure.

CI: Confidence interval.

It’s a statistical device used to estimate an unknown value. In this case, they are 95% confident that 97.5% of those who have symptoms will exhibit them between 8.3 and 15.6 days. It could be more, it could be less, but they’re pretty sure it’s in that range.

CI stands for confidence interval. In this case that means there is 97.5% or higher probability that the true median day of first symptoms is between the upper and lower CI bounds.

Thanks for the article!!!! But I’m still wondering if this was actually contracted in So Hum before she left. And, yes, masks for all if you must leave your home!

Agreed. I’m now at 21 days but I know the extreme case was somebody getting symptoms after 25 days. This asymptomatic thing…that means I may never have symptoms but I can still be a carrier. How long is that for? I am quarantining for others but I am ready to start delivering food as soon as I’m cleared. But..ummm…there aren’t any tests available…So I could be carrying the virus, I can have it w/ zero symptoms and shedding it but for how long could that last before I am considered clean?

From what I’ve read, the median time for viral shedding of the covid virus is 20 days. Median.

Median duration of viral shedding was 20·0 days (IQR 17·0–24·0) in survivors, but SARS-CoV-2 was detectable until death in non-survivors. The longest observed duration of viral shedding in survivors was 37 days.

It seems awfully silly to applaud this woman for not using common sense and canceling her non essential trip, at that point on the timeline she could have consulted a doctor or simply thought for herself instead of relying on the governments slow paced reactive guidelines. After all she brought this infection into the community did she not?

Right, my mind is blown that everyone is so proud of her for waiting to be forced into doing the right thing. So ridiculous.

The federal government controls the airplanes and allowed the airlines to sell and redeem tickets. The airlines even dropped their prices to intice the citizens of the United States to board their virus infested aircraft. You are good that the federal government as late as March 22nd and is still currently allowing citizens to fly and you think she made a poor judgement. Ridiculous.

Very serious actually. Extremely poor leadership from the president not grounding all aircraft. He controls the airline industry which has been the main cause of the spread of the virus which directly affect the citizens of the US. It’s killing people and he is still allowing viral incubators to cross back and forth and he just has to say stop, wtf!!

Now it has to stop? When travel was stopped from chi na I recalled someone was called a racist and everything else they could think of because. Of it! Then it was banned too late. If Trump cured cancer, it would be ridiculed. Some people can’t still get over he won, doing a great job with his hands tied behind him with having to fight numerous fronts. He has secured the 2020 race and all the critics can have 4 more years to bash some more.

There’s nothing stopping the county from quarantining all passengers who disembark at ACV. Nothing but the fucking greed and mendacity of grifters.

Yes, this person should have known better than to travel by air at that time and made an imprudent and unsafe decision carrying through with her plans. But since then she has done everything right. She should be commended for coming forward to warn people of the danger. And Kym should be commended for getting out the facts (without invading anyone’s privacy) before the rumors take hold.

I flew at that time. There were absolutely NO travel warnings, no signs at any airports, zero government advice about that, We even had leaders telling us it was nothing much and going to go away so don’t worry. NOW you are full of hate and too-late advice, Captain Obvious. Thank YOU- for nothing helpful at all. I did like this person and immediately quarantined upon arrival. On my own- nobody including you told me to do it. Why weren’t you out there at ACV with a sign- you care so much. Why don’t you direct your frustration at those who did not quarantine? I know there were a bunch of them on my plane out of SFO. I was the only freak who brought wipes on board and sterilized my seat and tray and wall, refusing open containers from the stewardesses. NYC blew up 3 days after I returned…Vent your frustration at people who never bothered removing themselves from the community and those who are still acting careless in town. That would be more productive than shaming people over something in the past. Because get this- If I had the same intel now as I had then….I’d do it again. Maybe I’d skip the bagel shop. Hmm…probly not!

We can think it was bad judgement (I do) but when they are all better they will breathe a sigh of relief and think wow we did it all, we got to the wedding. The familial pull will make people do risky things sometime. But really, should have known better.

(PS: with all your “hate!” shouts Teresa you become the hater, funny how that works.)

I don’t have a car and can’t afford a taxi. After the hobo coughed on me today I don’t really give a shit if I have to take the bus to the coroner’s office. Fuck [edit:Seaman] and fuck this county for not making the Hobos shelter in place.
