Nine New COVID-19 Cases Confirmed Today: April 2 Results on COVID-19 Testing From the County of Humboldt

April 2 Public Health Lab reportPress release from Humboldt County COVID19 – Joint Information Center:

A total of 37 Humboldt County residents have tested positive for COVID-19 after nine new cases were confirmed today.

No additional cases of community transmission have been confirmed at this time. Another person has been hospitalized, bringing the total number of hospitalizations to two since the outbreak began.

Data available to date indicates the following means of transmission for all Humboldt County cases:

  • Contact to a Known Case: 18
  • Travel-Acquired: 11
  • Community Transmission: 3
  • Under Investigation: 5

Approximately 75 percent of cases are located in areas in or around Eureka, Arcata, McKinleyville and Fortuna. Fifty-three percent are male, while 47 percent are female. The mean age of all local cases is 42.

As the number of cases continues to rise, Humboldt County Health Officer Dr. Teresa Frankovich stressed the importance of being proactive to “flatten the curve” and prevent spread of the virus. “Follow the shelter-in-place order, and if you must leave your home, practice social distancing,” she said. “That is still the best way to protect yourself and your family.”

Where does the information come from regarding the percentages of cases per city and is it publically available?

Just -ucking terrific!! The more we test the more asymptomatic cases arise.

I don't like it either.

…and what sir is your solution?
More testing?
Based on what criteria?
Asymptomatic cases will continue to arise, to be sure. That is why we are sheltering in place…to keep from spreading this virus so rapidly that it overwhelms the health care system.
Tests are great. A vaccine will be better. In the meantime, we have to infect slowly, treat the unfortunate that end up in the hospital, and ride it out if you’re healthy enough.
Most will survive. Some will not. Our system is not adequate to deal with this.
Deal with that!
Shit just got real.

Where do you see any mention of asymptomatic cases being revealed?
All the people tested were symptomatic to begin with. I know because i just got a response from the County. I had asked the question for the panel at the meeting the other night that was live-streamed, with Dr Frankovich, Sheriff Honsal, Supervisor Fennell, etc. They didn’t have time for all the questions there, but here is my question and (emailed) reply:
Q: When LoCO reports a handful of new confirmed cases of Covid-19, does that mean symptomatic people suffering from the disease, or does it include healthy carriers of the Sars-COV-2 virus? This is a black-and-white question… does the total include both carriers and sick people, or only active cases of sickness? This is an important question i have not seen answered..
A: Humboldt County Joint Information Center about 3 hours ago
This is a good question and opportunity for clarification. Currently, testing is only performed on individuals exhibiting symptoms. Close contacts are monitored during quarantine for symptoms daily.

That is, out of 848 people who had symptoms that made them suspect coronavirus (not a random sample of the population) 37 tested positive, and 2 thus far have required hospitalization.

Thank you Laura, that’s the best information I’ve seen from the county. It’s dumbfounding it has to be so painstakingly extracted!

A derivative message: three quarters of our cases come from the cities clumped around greater Humboldt Bay, which also contain about three quarters of our county population. So it seems generic rural Humboldt may have a roughly equal rate of tested infection. But it’s undoubtedly in hotspots. Why in the world wouldn’t Frankovich want people to know such things? I get that she wants to avoid mass panic, or making it easy to identify our neighborhood Typhoid Marys, etc. Her cure is worse than the disease. It helps the disease to spread. Help!

Hopefully this is the major breakthrough we need. Close to finding a vaccine. And the part I like the best is that it will be applied by a patch, like putting on a bandage, and not a shot. Sweeeeeet.

https://nypost.com/2020/04/02/scientists-believe-they-found-potential-coronavirus-vaccine/

“Scientists at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine believe that they’ve found a potential vaccine for the new coronavirus.

The researchers announced their findings Thursday and believe the vaccine could be rolled out quickly enough to “significantly impact the spread of disease,””

It takes a year minimum to get a vaccine made and approved after clinical trials..and that’s if everything goes perfect in the trials..

I am pretty sure the FDA is starting to get that they need to ease up on regulations a bit. They are part of the reason we are in such a big mess and why don’t have hand sanitizers, masks, and testing! I mean there is a certain safety to be addressed, but a vaccine.. they really need to get that out ASAP!

Also, it’s strange. I read the article, and it’s interesting because, another article I read recently was about how they were having trouble testing for a vaccine because they use mice, and mice don’t get Coronavirus the way humans do… so I wonder how they pulled that together. But let’s hope they did!

We are pretty high up there with cases per capita in the state.
Not taking it serious.

What do they mean by “community transmission”? Does that mean it was acquired by being in contact with, say, a grocery store item or countertop or handrail?

I’ve read that ~25% of people who tested positive are asymptomatic. And also that picking this up from surfaces is way less likely than person-to-person. These community spread cases might be due to people who are carrying the virus but not showing any symptoms and have not been tested.

Nine new cases is significant! It seems like the testing may be becoming more efficient? 9 cases! That’s some bad news. In some good news, this 104 year old survived COVID!
