[UPDATE 11:29 a.m.] Fire on the Bluffs East of 101 Between Rio Dell and Scotia

A large column of black smoke is rising to the east of Hwy 101 between Scotia and Rio Dell, according to multiple reports. “Possibly accessed off of Ash Dump Road,” the dispatcher relayed from observers.

“The fire is located between the riverbar and the railroad tracks,” a first responder said over the scanner.

Please remember that information gathered from initial reports is subject to revision as more facts become available.

UPDATE 11:29 a.m.: A first responder at the scene reports the fire is about 40′ x 40′ and spread from a homeless encampment.

UPDATE 1:03 p.m.: Firefighters have managed to contain the fire. The photo below provided by Laura Starnes shows the smoke earlier today.

I can see the smoke and there are BOOMS and the sound of shots (like a gun) happening off and on. Homeless camp?

I hope this is contained quickly. I read last week that there is coal in those hills
