OES Distributed Personal Protective Equipment to Agencies Throughout Humboldt County
Press release from the COVID19 – Joint Information Center:
In the past week, the Humboldt County Office of Emergency Services (OES) has distributed 30,000 pieces of personal protective equipment (PPE) to local health care facilities and first responders throughout the county.
Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) volunteers and Humboldt County Sheriff’s deputies delivered the necessary equipment to 27 local agencies Friday.
EOC Logistics Chief John Wilson said the county has been split into three distribution routes encompassing the northern, central and southern parts of the county.
Though the influx of supplies has been sporadic, Wilson said the county plans to distribute this PPE to health care facilities on a weekly basis. First responders, including local law enforcement and fire departments, will receive PPE distribution twice a month.
“CERT has been instrumental in providing volunteers available to us,” Wilson said. “Depending on the need, we have four to six volunteers available to us every day.”
Despite the uncertainty people are feeling, Wilson said he is impressed with how people are stepping up. “The community is coming together as it should,” he said. “It’s been refreshing to see this many county, state and local government entities from a whole host of backgrounds, come together to manage an incident none of us have ever really trained for.”
Regarding personal use of PPE, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends the following, “If you are sick: You should wear a facemask, if available, when you are around other people (including before you enter a healthcare provider’s office).”
The CDC goes on to recommend, “If you are caring for others: If the person who is sick is not able to wear a facemask (for example, because it causes trouble breathing), then as their caregiver, you should wear a facemask when in the same room with them. Visitors, other than caregivers, are not recommended. Please note: During a public health emergency, facemasks may be reserved for health care workers.”

TY!!!!! (Sorry, but where are your gloves FFs?)
FDCaptain, Trump would not give them any.
What about last responders? Funeral home workers need protection also.
Does this include small volunteer fire departments like Orick?
My understanding is yes. Have your fire chief contact the OES. I think the best number is 707-441-5000.
There are almost 2000 people in the county making face masks, to be used in the less dangerous situations to save the special medical masks for the very infectious medical work. I see many people in Asia and Europe wearing masks for their own protection and we are wearing our homemade masks in stores. Be safe you-all.
There was a great article in the Washington Post today about face masks. The link is listed below.

The CDC does not currently reccomend routine use of facemasks. They do reccomend if you’re showing symptoms you don’t go out at all.
Most Asian countries do recommend facemasks. They have had more experience and most have handled the virus far better than western countries.
You can reuse a mask. Sterilize it overnight in a zip lock baggie with 91% alcohol. There will not be one solitary germ on it after that.
Congratulations to the Washington Post for an article that is at least raises questions rather its normal pursuit supplying correct thinking. The idea of public wearing of face masks is one with the usual human foul ups in the mix. Much less the outrageous idea of making your own. Expecting them not to just toss it out into the ocean when they alreadytoss everything else there. Or points out that the government is just as full of disingenuous people with agendas as anywhere else. And the idea of a “mask tree” is horrifying.
In most Asians countries who can afford it wearing face masks are a cultural statement of common identity- it is seen as self protection and socially responsible. I imagine compliance in the US will never be as uniform as there simply because there is a larger contingent of people here who will simply stick their bare face into anyone else’s and say “make me.”
But I love the idea of making use of waste material, which costs next to nothing, anyone can afford and is also capable of be a designer statement. Ready for the first glitter mask?
It’s called a bandanna.
