March 26, 2020 – Public Health Lab Report

Total positive cases confirmed on March 26: 2

  • Total number of positive cases: 12
  • Total number of active cases: 11
  • Total number of hospitalizations: 1

Total number of people tested by Public Health Laboratory: 191

Total number of people tested by all other sources: 160

(Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, California Department of Public Health and commercial labs)

The Public Health Laboratory currently has a capacity of approximately 500 tests and can process about 30 samples a day with an approximate turnaround time of 48 hours.

Two additional cases of COVID-19 were confirmed today, one by the Public Health Laboratory and the other by a commercial lab, bringing the number of known cases in Humboldt County to 12. Today also marked the first hospitalization of a COVID patient since the outbreak began locally.

Both of these cases are under investigation.

The mechanism of transmission of the fifth case, from March 24, has not yet been determined.

Humboldt County Health Officer Dr. Teresa Frankovich said, “It remains everyone’s responsibility to comply with the shelter-in-place order,” adding that all non-essential travel should be canceled.

The shelter-in-place order remains in effect through April 9. For current information about COVID-19, visit cdc.gov or cdph.ca.gov. Local information is available at humboldtgov.org or during business hours by emailing [email protected] or calling 707-441-5000.

It seems like every day they provide less information. Still it is not clear.

Is it 12 positives in 351 total tests?

The hospitalized case is a 26 year old female at St. Joseph’s. She is in the PCU, one level of care below ICU. This thing can hit anybody, any age, hard.

The US now has the highest number of total cases, including China, and the highest number of active cases, in the world, at 85, 268, and 82,111. The death toll was 266 today and will surely climb, as indicated by the rate at which new cases are emerging (13,355 today). There are over 23,000 cases in NYC alone.

“But the doctor, who works at a quarantine facility, said the government tally “cannot be trusted.”

The number of patients currently undergoing treatment is deliberately being reduced in an effort to show the Xi government’s success in combatting the epidemic, he said.”

China is not as reliable as South Korea.

Trump’s a liar. His first action was to disallow entry to non US citizens who had travelled to China during the previous 2 weeks. And that very small action was done 3 weeks after the first reports about the virus. The actions taken in California were all by Governor Newsome. Trump did little or nothing besides bragging and getting in the way of professionals.

Missed the national news lately? Regarding Newsome, it was a bold action. Whether it helps to slam the barn door after the horse has escaped versus shutting the barn door quietly without damaging it is a solution or not I do not know. Give it a couple of months and it will be more clear.

When the case studies are completed and books are written about this episode, there are very few politicians who are going to come out looking good. Trump is definitely not one of them, distorted hyperbolic attacks on him notwithstanding.

I don’t care for Gavin Newsom but so far he’s on a path to being put in the “good” column for the robust and timely response in this state. Many of the problems we’ve had here are from the weak response at the federal level, with TSA dropping the ball as an example.

The Chinese government is very, very aware of their own people’s reactions. They spend huge effort controlling what they let their people hear lest the government has to face protests like Tiananmen Square forty years ago. Because they do that though does not mean the US has to buy what they’re selling.

I wish her well and hope she recovers fully. It is no comfort to her or her family, but I did want to point out that yesterday our cases doubled from five to ten and today we only have two new cases.

This doesn’t mean anything at all since we don’t have enough tests, but it’s a cute little bedtime story that might help somebody get some sleep tonight anyway. If we’d had 20 or 100 cases today, I don’t think I could personally sleep.

Stay safe, Humboldt.

The smaller number of cases that might be caused by community transmission are of much greater concern than the nine cases that originated from outside this area. We have no idea how many undetected infections there may be. We could be looking at much worse numbers soon.

What you mean is that community transmission is harder to contain. But community transmission started in the first place from a traveler who was not isolated. Anyway we are certain to be looking at much worse numbers.

Here’s something to think about, as far as, “reported cases,” goes: https://www.amgreatness.com/2020/03/19/dangerous-curves/?fbclid=IwAR1mgKEAJ7pVRwvLdpFIzgGDHmIvhvd3qj-FOIKETnROjUHmu4BIJ-irqWE Our numbers are flawed, because we’re only testing severe cases. Italy’s numbers are extremely flawed, for the same reason. China’s numbers stand for themselves. How many fatalities, out of 1.3 billion people? Extrapolate that number out to the US, and tell me how many people you think are going to die.

It’s a farce, an illogical, manufactured panic. MRSA, and the flu, kill far more people, day in, and day out, and they have for many, many years — yet we don’t shut down society for them.

Yeah, I don’t think Vodka is high enough. Most Vodka is only 80 proof. By contrast that’s only 40% alcohol content. They say it needs to be 60%. By contrast, The 190-proof variation of Everclear is 92.4% ethanol by weight. I have been eyeing all of my liquor to figure it out. The grain Alcohol I have I got from a company not in California to make tinctures. It’s higher than Everclear. I am bummed I have to use it for hand sanitizer now!

Some booze distilleries in the Bay Area are using their stills to make hand sanitizer grade alcohol. Wonder if they could make something like that here? I got a couple of Alcohol bottles from the dollar store the other day.. and they were only 50% Alcohol BUMMER! I did find some hydrogen peroxide and use that to spray surfaces.. Lucky for me I have a gallon of organic grain alcohol laying around and a ton of Aloe plants growing.. but I will probably get Abated for my Aloe plants.. at some point.. because they are probably worth a ton now! Lol.

Yeah. It’s crazy. This is a good article about what’s happening with the hand sanitizer situation.. Apparently there are a bunch of ridiculous red tape that the FDA has been very slow to take action to stifle for the time being to get the Handsanitizer to the Hospitals and the public.

‘The alcohol is not denatured or mixed with a bitter additive to make it undrinkable. The FDA insists this step is “critical” because of cases of poisoning, sometimes fatal, among young children who have accidentally ingested hand sanitizer’

‘If we could get the FDA to say yes you can use the beverage grade and for the duration of this emergency at least for some point in time here for the next two weeks you can waive the denaturant we would literally have millions of gallons of hand sanitizer available within a matter of days,” said Monte Shaw, CEO of Iowa Renewable Fuels Association, an ethanol trade group. “Every one of our plants has gotten contacted by people who want this stuff and we can’t send it to them.”

‘We are literally three miles from a plant that has as much ethanol as you could imagine,” he said. “We’re sitting on millions of gallons of alcohol. If we could rally the federal government to say look if you just let us work with local ethanol producers we have the expertise, we have the ability to provide hand sanitizer to hospitals not only in Nebraska but all across the country that are just reaching out through my network saying if you could send us hand sanitizer, we’re out.”

USA took gold in the 100k case event today. Italy on a pace for silver, followed by Spain for bronze. China drops out of competition after crossing the 80k mark.

Italy on pace to clinch gold in the 10k death event soon, possibly tomorrow. Spain leading for silver as the USA mounts a valiant effort to catch up with the crowd competing for bronze, with a doubling time consistent at about 2.5 days since 3/20.

USA a heavy favorite for gold in the 150k case event and sure to be a strong contender in the 15k death event.

That not harmless humor. That is ugly panic mongering and the result of not understanding epidemics, disease nor statistics. This disease will kill the same percentage of people whether it is China, the US or Italy. Whether it is now or over the next few months. China has not stopped it but has analyzed the stats, decided they can easily sacrifice the number who will die, are more interested in stopping their own citizens from panicking while they pursue their goal of control by making it worse for people who don’t toady to them. While we have commenters making things worse. The same short sighted ones that left us with almost no manufacturing capability with their futile world order propaganda.

Thirdeye

It’s not panic mongering. It’s sardonic and grounded in an understanding of what temporal data series indicate about the exponential growth trends we’re on at this point. If you can’t handle the trends derived from hard data without panicking, that’s your problem.

“This disease will kill the same percentage of people whether it is China, the US or Italy.”

Wrong. And to shore up your wrong contention you spin a conspiracy theory about China. The data indicating disparate outcomes related to the performance of epidemiological control and healthcare systems throughout the world don’t support your ideological hobby horse.

The fact is, without the growth trend in the US making a miraculous reversal over the next few days, we’ll be at over 150k cases within a week and still climbing fast, even if the rate becomes linear. If the US gets through this wave with only 15k deaths, we should consider ourselves very lucky.

Read the article linked in Chuck U’s post below. Is that also “panic mongering?”

Now you can go cry, scream, eat a box of bonbons, put your fist through the wall……whatever.

I read that days ago. But you know what panic monger does? People do stupid things like buy up all the toilet paper, start using various other thing and crash the sewer system. Or they create stay at home orders so that the the person who has been working stays home to care for children and is not there to clean teeth or drive supplies to the hospital or manufactures. Doctors are ordering hydroxychloroquine and azithromycin to get for themselves and relatives so that people who rely on the medications can’t get it. People will try to get away from cities and kill themselves on the road. Etc, etc, etc.

It’s not that won’t be a substantial number of deaths due to this virus. There will be. But the panic will also cause deaths and, unlike the deaths due to disease, these will be avoidable deaths. Totally avoidable just by dealing with each urgency as it comes up and stop manufacturing them ahead of time. That much is within everyone’s control.

Thirdeye

Facing the reality of what lies ahead of us isn’t panic mongering. Some people will panic no matter what. People buying excess toilet paper that will sit for months is silly, but I wouldn’t get too bent out of shape about it. All that will happen is that there will be a demand trough for TP after the demand peak. People who dispose of sanitary wipes in the toilet aren’t panicking, they are ignorant.

“[Panic mongers] create stay at home orders so that the the person who has been working stays home to care for children and is not there to clean teeth or drive supplies to the hospital or manufactures.”

Oh, so the shelter in place order is “panic monger” and makes no allowance for essential services? And dentists shouldn’t protect themselves from potential infection from patients, or vice-versa?

“Doctors are ordering hydroxychloroquine and azithromycin to get for themselves……..”

And they deserve it, since they are the ones most obligated to face elevated risks of exposure. Do you have definite knowledge of a shortage for patients? If not, then STFU.

“People will try to get away from cities and kill themselves on the road.”

That’s people violating shelter-in-place, which is something I’ve been railing against all along.

Since you love the Olympic sports commentator style so much, here’s some more:

Italy clinches gold in the 10k death event at an unmatched pace of 889 deaths per day! Spain is leading for silver, at an almost as brutal 844 deaths per day. But there could be a challenge in the works, as USA, at a 515 death pace today and growing faster by leaps and bounds, prepares to blow past France , Iran, and now irrelevant China to chase Spain. The MAGA crowd holds out hope that pixie dust sprinkled on China will uncover tens, if not hundreds, of thousands of deaths that will put their favorite back in the lead and deny Italy gold on a challenge. But for now the big question remains, can USA close the gap and edge out Spain for Silver? With over 118,000 active cases USA has more than twice the fuel of Spain to support a surge as Spain pulls away from the halfway mark chasing silver. But the current 3700 death gap gives Spain hope to hold off USA in the the dash. Whatever happens, two things are certain. It’s going to be an exciting duel in the coming days and USA has great days ahead of it in the larger and more significant events!

Standard 80 proof drinkin’ liquor is only 40 percent alcohol and not strong enough for hand sanitizer. Even Bacardi 151 is only a bit more than 74 percent. (And way expensive for a hand-soap)

90 percent Isopropyl rubbing alcohol will do the trick and is dirt cheap. (No sin taxes on that poison)

And Yes, the Local “Boldt” distillery is making hand sanitizer out of good rye whiskey. (Nooooooo…….)

A must read for a dose of reality like a bucket of ice water over the head.

“2-11 days after exposure (day 5 on average) flu like symptoms start. Common are fever, headache, dry cough, myalgias(back pain), nausea without vomiting, abdominal discomfort with some diarrhea, loss of smell, anorexia, fatigue.”

“Day 5 of symptoms- increased SOB, and bilateral viral pneumonia from direct viral damage to lung parenchyma.”

“Day 10- Cytokine storm [severe immune reaction] leading to acute ARDS and multiorgan failure. You can literally watch it happen in a matter of hours.”

“81% mild symptoms, 14% severe symptoms requiring hospitalization, 5% critical.”

” Patients are coming in hypoxic[deprived of oxygen] (even 75%) without dyspnea. I have seen Covid patients present with encephalopathy [impaired brain function resulting from disease], renal [kidney] failure from dehydration, DKA.”

“China reported 15% cardiac involvement. I have seen covid 19 patients present with myocarditis, pericarditis, new onset CHF and new onset atrial fibrillation.”

“Worldwide 86% of covid 19 patients that go on a vent die. Seattle reporting 70%. Our hospital has had 5 deaths and one patient who was extubated. Extubation happens on day 10 per the Chinese and day 11 per Seattle.”

Now consider the number of ventilators that are projected to be needed, and that 70%+ of the patients on them will die. A large percentage of the survivors will have permanent lung damage.
Harsh.

Wonder how long it will take for the testing to catch up with the fact that this has been here all year?

Dang, the [edit] of my mild euphemism lets the imagination run wild! Not sure that was the desired effect.

By not releasing the general location of the people, city to town, with the virus and giving people a reason to use stricter due diligence in the prevention in their location, is childish and a disservice to the community. It leads me to believe “what other information of importance to they feel we can’t handle”. I no longer feel I can trust these county officials to be be candid and honest about this emergency. To me, omission of information is in the same category as lying. Most of us are adults and there should not be privileged information, within the law, withheld during these times.
When you have an unknown, it usually promotes misinformation and speculation.

It is safe to assume the virus is near enough to expose you no matter what. So having it confirmed that there’s A CASE near you should make no difference in how you behave. It can only offer false comfort if it is not, which may make some relax their efforts, or cause hardship for those singled out as more risky. I do not see the advantage in knowing.

All tRump has done is slow down our response and testing methods ; by refusing the WHO test kits and privatizing them to be made by 2 companies only. His only interest lies where it has always been …how can I line my pockets at the expense of others?

Are you saying that WHO had an extra 300million test kits, approved by our laws and standards, ready made and available for this virus ?

Are these new cases tied to that airline flight and the travelers that recently came into the county with the virus? Or are these new cases from community spread?

Where’s the status report from Dr. Frankostein’s DHHS office for today 3-27?? You won’t see it because the numbers are up more aren’t they Doctor?? What that investigation results into the travel agency’s trips they scheduled knowing the virus was a threat when your clients went on their trips?? How’s the Arcata airport testing going?? NOT!! Why test-everyone gets to come back and contaminate the rest of the community. That’s what viruses do-make you spread spread spread and not feel guilty as you do it.
Why are the grocery markets not getting bulk shipments of TP and water only? Marketing tells you double down when demand is high and continue until saturation occurs.
My best friend told me 35 years ago, you need TP, 22’s, and matches and you’ll survive any big society collapse. Heh-yeh got all those for survival items?
Lastly-if no report daily by Dr. Frankostein, then things are worse than the day before and she WON’T tell you!!!!! She’s our weakest link in Humboldt. Call her out on it-we pay her salary!!!!

Yeh!!! Its almost 12pm and Dr. Frankostein hasn’t done -hit with a report.
Get my message-its worse in numbers and she WON”T say squat!!
Silence isn’t what any of us concerned citizens want so wake up.
At $200k+ per year I expect a lot from her.

You are really that naïve?

Kyn, Not trying to argue, but she has not reported any info for today 3-27 with yesterday’s final numbers up to 6pm. She is a day behind every day 24hours and she is choosing to not honor openness and transparency.

WE NEED TO SHUT DOWN HUMCO BORDERS IMMEDIATELY–ONLY ALLOWING LIFE SUSTAINING SUPPLIES IN, AND OUT.

THESE INCOMING SUPPLIES SHOULD BE RATIONED AND DISTRIBUTED BY HOME DELIVERY ONLY.

EVERYONE SHOULD BE TESTED IMMEDIATELY BY MAIL, THEN PERIODICALLY THEREAFTER.

POSTIVES SHOULD BE TRACED AND FORCED TO ISOLATE.

ALL UNTIL A VACCINE IS AVAILABLE.

Trump is trying his hardest but I suspect Trump already knows the mindset (because he can totally relate) of the bigots he plays to, assuring a vote.

Newsom has cancelled eviction laws and enforcement until the end of May.

There is a process to go through, but renters who can not afford rent because of being affected by Covid 19 now have protections.

Kudos to Gavin, that’s a big deal.

Newsom gave local municipalities the authority to suspend mortgage foreclosure and eviction processes … now, will Humboldt follow suit? The powers that be here have not demonstrated much concern for the “little people.” So it will be a miracle if they do.

The police in Eureka have already said they are not working any eviction orders. I suspect other are doing the same.

I think it’s the other way around.

30 counties in California had already developed policies essentially aiming to protect renters, before Gavin’s announcement today.

What Gavin did was make a baseline that is now statewide. So if counties have or develop their own policies, those county policies can override the State policy.

Little good it will do for a lot of So Hum Folks. The moratorium only applies to Federally backed Morgage’s anyway. With soo many Owner carry situations around here, It will probably not help So Hum much, unless Humboldt agrees to non eviction.. But if people are having troubles.. Write your “lender” and see if they might work with you anyway.. at least I would. The supervisors should act and make some sort of moratoriums that work for people here..

Why Is America Choosing Mass Unemployment?

But the sudden collapse of employment was not inevitable. It is instead a disastrous failure of public policy that has caused immediate harm to the lives of millions of Americans, and that is likely to leave a lasting mark on their future, on the economy and on our society.

But the sudden collapse of employment was not inevitable. It is instead a disastrous failure of public policy that has caused immediate harm to the lives of millions of Americans, and that is likely to leave a lasting mark on their future, on the economy and on our society.

…..

The federal government’s first and best chance to prevent mass unemployment was to keep the new coronavirus under control through a system of testing and targeted quarantines like those implemented by a number of Asian nations. But even after it became clear that the Trump administration had failed to prepare for the pandemic, policymakers still could have chosen to prioritize employment by paying companies to keep workers on the job during the period of lockdown.

A number of European countries, after similarly failing to control the spread of the virus, and thus being forced to lock down large parts of their economies, have chosen to protect jobs. Denmark has agreed to compensate Danish employers for up to 90 percent of their workers’ salaries. In the Netherlands, companies facing a loss of at least 20 percent of their revenue can similarly apply for the government to cover 90 percent of payroll. And the United Kingdom announced that it would pay up to 80 percent of the wage bill for as many companies as needed the help, with no cap on the total amount of public spending.
