[UPDATE 6:09 p.m.] Fourth County Resident Tests Positive for COVID-19
Press release from the County of Humboldt Joint Information Center:
A fourth county resident has tested positive for COVID-19, local health officials confirmed this afternoon. The fourth resident was in the same traveler group as the individual announced earlier who had traveled internationally.
A multistate investigation of possible contacts is currently under way. Symptomatic contacts will be tested and isolated while results are pending. Asymptomatic contacts will be quarantined.
Humboldt County Health Officer Dr. Teresa Frankovich and Sheriff William Honsal said this once again affirms the importance of the shelter-in-place order that went into effect last week and discouraged all travel.
“We’re praying for these people and wish them both a full recovery,” Honsal said.
Humboldt County previously confirmed two cases of the virus, one on Feb. 20 and the second on March 20.

He has consistently proposed budgets with catastrophic cuts to everything that isn’t defense or homeland security.

Is the health department notifying people who were on the same flight? Did they fly directly into Arcata from SF or Denver? This information might help the community to figure out our own level of risk, especially without available testing.

People this shit is serious. I had to go to Safeway today, most people did not maintain social distancing. I had to ask four people to get out of my space! I hear there are a number of businesses that are not “essential” that are open. Should we really be selling cars, insurance, jewelry, etc right now? Local LEO’s need to make the rounds!

Then there are the absolute idiots who lead HSU that just chartered a bus and brought 31 HSU students back from LA and San Francisco Saturday. These were students who left at spring break an have now decided to ignore the shelter in place orders and travel up here and put Humboldt County at risk.
Where is the Public Health Officer and Sheriff who gave the order locally. Where is the Governor who gave the state wide order. If they allow this kind of crap to keep happening the outbreak is on them.
Those of us who were working and were laid off due to the orders and are following orders are the ones losing in this situation.

Yes, I’m extremely disturbed by HSU’s actions. What part of “shelter in place” do they not comprehend? It’s unfortunate the students were out of the area, but “shelter in place” does not mean transport them back here. Anyone at HSU involved with that decision should be charged with manslaughter if people die due to those students infecting the populace. This was a deliberate decision on HSU’s part to expose the community.
I demand that Sheriff Honsal arrest those responsible at HSU for allowing the transport of these individuals. This decision will be responsible for many deaths. Why are these students above the law and human decency?
Shouldn’t we all be wearing facemasks to stop unintended asymptomatic virus transmission? I don’t mean N95s or surgical, just self made masks to lessen a potential viral load that we may inhale or to stop us from unintended spread if we are asymptomatic. I am actually a praying person myself. That said, God expects actions to go along with praying. I don’t question the Sheriff’s faith, I question his lack of action. His leadership is very poor and the department under his leadership is the laziest and most inactive I have ever seen.
Hopefully someone with good leadership skills and the ability to recruit deputies that have work ethics will run against him next time he’s up for reelection.
