Snowy Conditions on Some Major Highways
National Weather Service in Eureka warns, “Additional snowfall expected today (though some of this has already fallen early this morning). Conditions will improve later today & tonight.”
Snow fell overnight in the hills of Humboldt and the surrounding counties down as far as to 1500 feet. The Major Highways–Here’s What We Know:

- Interstate 5: Open–however, Caltrans and CHP are checking to see vehicles are carrying chains about 10 miles north of Redding in the Fawndale area.
- Hwy 1: Open
- Hwy 3: Open
- Hwy 20: Open
- Hwy 36: Chains required from 3 miles west of Mad River (Zenia Road) to 5 miles west of Platina.
- Hwy 96: Open
- Hwy 101: Open
- HWY 162 (Covelo Road): Open
- Hwy 169 (Klamath): Open
- Hwy 199: Open
- Hwy 254 (Avenue of the Giants): Open
- Hwy 255: Open
- Hwy 271: Open
- Hwy 299: Chains required for a few miles starting 2.25 miles west of Trinity / Shasta county line and heading east to 21 miles west of Redding.

Locally lower snow levels…We’re at 1400′ and got about 4″ of snow, all the trees heavy with snow; and it’s very snowy in the valley down below our ridge.
It snowed & a 1000ft @ 11:20am but didn’t stick
Yes had those little balls on east side of gulch, they were so odd! Not hail but literally itty bitty snowballs.
