Zoo’s $2.3M Elevated Redwood Canopy Walk Coming Soon

Rendering of the elevated canopy walk. [Sequoia Park Zoo]

As mentioned in the latest episode of Humboldt Last Week, on March 3 the Eureka City Council is looking to OK a contractor for a raised canopy walk in the redwoods above the Sequoia Park Zoo.

Those behind this say they’re “poised to deliver an unparalleled and unique experience that will drive attendance growth from across the country and internationally.”

A zoo rep told HLW they’ll be starting construction on the canopy walk in just a few weeks. It’s possible zoo-goers will be enjoying the new feature by the end of summer or early fall this year.

A city document shows the contract to build the canopy walk can’t exceed $2.3 million bucks. Some of that money came from grants and the rest was a large donation from local lodging alliances.

In other zoo news, they just announced how they’re teaming up with the Bear River Band of Rohnerville Rancheria an upcoming bear and coyote exhibit.

This story begins at 7:37 in the new episode of Humboldt Last Week streaming below.

Much cooler than giving booze and cigarettes to “Bill” so he can throw poop at you. Granted thought that was pretty cool as a child.

Interesting to see what $2.3 million buys for the Eureka Zoo.

The World should know just how cool redwood forests are.

OMG…I remember Bill. My uncle would bring him coffee and cigars.

He never threw poop at us.

While this proposal is kind of cool, I’ll always remember the park as our playground. Not the actual playground, but the woods and down to the Duck Pond. There and climbing to the top of the hedgerow of trees right on Glatt, separating the street from the flower garden that was(is) just north of the Zoo. We’d hang out there on the top.

We lived on Glatt Street, right across the street, literally.

Things change. That’s good, and sad, too.

My Dad’s oldest brother, my favorite uncle, lived on Everding. I used to walk to the duck ponds with my aunt to toss old bread to feed the ducks.

I was born in January 1953 in (old) St. Josephs at 11:06 AM but never have lived in Eureka and have lived over 1/2 life outside of Humboldt county. I never abused Bill being a small child in the 1950s but he was likely the Eureka Zoos star attraction.

Bill did other things as well…. My sister and I would asked our parents what he was doing. Never did get a reply until I was older. However he did have personality. I was also was born and grew up in Eureka. Sequoia Zoo, the duck pond, the beaches and the river is where we would hang out. Many fond memories.

Seems like a waste of money to get a little ways up a giant tree. And most likely a pile of junk 500 years from now. What else could we do with that money?

Are they taking in to account how many of the trees are not safe to be around? Many of the trees there are broken or cracked and quite a few widow makers A few trees are only standing because of those trees around them. The walkways will have to also take into account that those trees sway a lot. Seems like it will be something that will always be in some state of repair and although a good idea in reality the money could be better spent.

So don’t go. We’ll look forward to hearing you crow about it when someone gets a splinter or something.

Hope they don’t kill the bears or any animals while they are constructing the walk like they did in 1982. Killed papa and mama bear while doing construction.

The first time I went to the zoo, ’97 or ’98, the one black bear in the enclosure laid sadly on the concrete ground with no dirt around. The donkey had dirt. The flamingos had dirt. There was even dirt under the golf course-like lawn adjacent to the bear enclosure, but, the bear had none. I know it takes money to change things, but, c’mon, it’s dirt; I’m sure they could’ve found some somewhere in this county.

Kym- Out of curiosity, has their been any mention of what the security measures to keep people off of it during the night/closed park hours? Everything I read of the plans seems vague in that department.

I haven’t seen anything. But that’s an interesting question. I’ll try to get an answer if I can squeeze out some time.

Meanwhile, dozens of human beings remain homeless in Humboldt. (If not hundreds)
There is no affordable housing. You can’t keep a job if you have no place to live, and you can’t rent a house if you don’t have a job😠

True, don’t forget about global warming, nasty viruses, abused puppies, knuckleheads in power, and carrots in a cake?!! Who thought of that one? Sheeesh. Fun stuff must not be tolerated!

Wow. I didn’t realize that spending over 2 million dollars to avoid walking on the ground was such a wonderful investment! So we get some tourists who think it’s cool to avoid walking on ground level also? I don’t think I appreciate those kinds of tourists… I see people living on the streets and a broken mental health system and I think we are bizarre to spend such big money on this. It’s actually shameful. People think this is cool?

Would you have approved of the Eiffel Tower? Or the Statue of Liberty?

My guess this project makes more people aware of our relationship with nature. Plus offers some amazing views.

My local community near Tampa has the Brooker Creek preserve. With boardwalks and learning centers. A humble yet inspiring place.

I’m all for positive public works projects.

Will there be an entrance for the handicapped or will there just be steps?
