If you are still not convinced that your vote matters, think again.
The final canvass report for the 2016 Primary election held in Humboldt shows the overall total number of voters that actually participated was 41,993 of 79,686 = 52.7%. The 1st District had 16,002 registered voters and 6,651 voted for Supervisor. The incumbent Rex Bohn was running unopposed and was able to garner 6136 votes. There were 515 unqualified write-ins.
In the 2nd District, Estelle Fennell had one opponent, Bud Rogers. Out of 15,181 registered voters, Fennel received 5430 votes, with only 64 unqualified write-ins. 7096 ballots were cast for 2nd District Supervisor in all. I hope that our County will not elect politicians who sacrifice the quality of life of their constituents and sell-out the unique features of Humboldt for short-term gain. It is my belief, as 2nd District Supervisor, Michael McKaskle would carefully take into account all aspects of proposed projects. With thoughtful and informed consideration, his decision to approve would not be based on profitability alone.
I urge you to research all of the candidates’ platforms before casting your ballot.

Well, idk, How bad has it hurt sohum to have no new businesses able to get water while this legalizatiin makes people want to get out of pot?
Mr mckaskle been in the redway water company for a long time. You cant get new water service from them and they dont declare a moratorium or do much but raise rates.
Mckaskle told me he doesnt want to get grants to pay for what needs fixed because he wants redway residents to pay their own way. But that business district serves evrrybody in the whole region.
He talks sharp, but he’sfull of shit. Heard a woman tell somebody in the line over at the post office last week how mckaskle told julie peacock he couldnt give gyppo water because she’d go under the building at night and put her brewery waste in his sewer plant.
That made me laugh, but i think ill pass on him though.
People who don’t vote, they bring you government you won’t like, stuff like Hospital District Taxes, Marijuana Permits nobody can afford, and, they will make you get Building Permits!
Rex, and Estelle, they will be re-elected, until decent candidates, people somewhat better than Devries or McKaskle or Bushnell, or, the other guy…
Yes, the people who don’t vote, and the people who don’t run, these folks will continue to bring you bad politicians like Rex and Estelle… Until Rex and Estelle either die, or somehow decide to retire…
Life in Humboldt is changing, and the Supervisors need changing too! Try again in 4 years…

The other candidates are just not qualified or electable. They don’t bring much to the table , bushnell does not know how to work with people and can be very divisive, Lost Coast outpost expose on Devries wrote about his shady past and his shady financial dealings with consumers in Florida and San Francisco yet he talks about “transparency “ when he hasn’t come clean about his “dealings”, mckaskle has no viable work history and still , as a grown man, seems to still rely on his parents for his keep, yes he sits on a Board that nobody wants to run for or sit on, plus he’s prone for having notable temper tantrums, and rick french, well just listen to him meander, he eventually gets to the part that says he was riding his bike and someone tried running him down and he blames the county and Estelle. Lol
We love that Estelle got our Community Park approved; she got our Sheriff’s substation back open, got millions of dollars for our rural fire departments, that was huge, she got a new planning and building office in SoHum for us ; a new library!, brought new affordable housing complex and much more. These are all long term positive gains for our community.

You are 100% right there are no choices, but she didnt get you shit. That office came because the feds have the board in a compliance agreement that she sat quietly procrastinating on the whole time shes been on the board.
All county buildings were supposed to be in compliance by this very month.
She has never said a word.

I take it you don’t care how “Estelle” got the “Community Park approved”?
Just for the record, its not a “Community Park”, its a private rent-a-park, on private property, operated by a non-membership private corporation, with no board meetings open to the Public.
The “Community Park” would not have been approved by Humboldt County without “Estelle” conducting and participating in private backroom deals outside the public process, outside public meeting and without full public disclosure of said private communication during said public hearings and meetings.
Is this the kind of elected official you want, working on deals in secret, in private, outside public meetings, bypassing the democratic and public process, not knowing who’s best interest she is representing?
I can say these things in public, because I have dozens and dozens of email communication I requested and received in a Public Record Act request, showing how much private communication “Estelle” had with the Park Board, Humboldt County Planning Director, Planning Staff and the Park’s private consultants during private meetings she attended outside of public meetings and not once did “Estelle” ever disclose this ex-parte communication before or during the public “Community Park approval” process with the Planning Commission or Board of Supervisors.
So I guess you support this kind of public/private process and this kind of public/private elected official, right? If you don’t believe me, ask “Estelle”!

Those achievements were made by ripping off the very PEOPLE she’s supposed to be representing. 4 more years of Estelle’s betrayal and there won’t be ANYONE to enjoy those public services except her little elitists group of permitted ass kissers. 8085 ballots for 2nd District Supervisor were never submitted in 2016. In total, 9751 votes were not in favor of Estelle. Hopefully, more people registered this year. Estelle received 5430 votes with only one opponent then, and has 4 now. Splitting the vote is not impossible. If the ‘foreseen’ run-off has more than 2 candidates, more topics will be included in the discussion.
Campaigns should be more about conversation, less about chanting slogans and/or invoking the names of those you support. Make the candidates work for it.
Sorry to see you go elsewhere, but those of us who consider Humboldt County home, won’t give-up so easily. Good luck finding somewhere better than here.
Unfortunately I agree with Billy. It looks like 4 more years of Estelle. She has sold out her community to big business. She was evasive at the clmp candidates forum. She often is absent from the Board of Supervisors meeting. SHE VOTED FOR HER OWN RAISE. Unfortunately Michelle Bushnell is not the answer. She supports Trump. She is for cutting food assistance. She really does not have a clue about solutions to problems or a clear path for a more sustainable better community. I think the March 3 election is going to result in a runoff between Bushnell and Fennell. Fennell will win in November and we will be stuck with 4 more years of her smooth talking B.S.

I haven’t seen him volunteer for any of our many non profits, go to Supes meetings or public hearings like the windmill ones. I say no to MM. Yes to Estelle. Just based on her experience alone she’s the one for me. She’s done a lot for us, and a lot more is in the works. It’s like Pete Buttigieg can go from mayor to Prez. Based on what?
Estelle has abated the county into a massive budget deficit and helped the Bulgarian mafia get permits all up and down the coast of California.
I’m fine with a little bit of cronyism and corruption but trampling all over peoples private property rights is where I draw the line. And the incompetence to not understand the economic consequences of the abatement program..
Forget Estelle, she should go back to Ireland.
Aside from being on the board of the Redway Community Services District and the Redwood Region Economic Development Commission (RREDC), he was also a founding member of the Eel River Recovery Project. McKaskle is also an on-air KMUD engineer since 2008 and volunteers at the Healy Senior Center and the Mateel Community Center.
As I drive around I notice which candidates plastered the ugly PLASTIC campaign signs all over our roads.
Then, I noticed that one candidate has only posted hand painted signs on reusable plywood.
No ugly, polluting PLASTIC.
A small thing perhaps, but it shows Michael McKaskle’s genuine, longterm concern for our community.
Ok so Estell sucks, agreed, Bushnell sucks, agreed.

Michael’s a good guy with the ability to use *long term thinking*, something our politicos don’t seem capable of (short term $ gain over sustainability.
