Background:

The Real ID Act was passed by Congress after 9/11 and modified federal law’s related to security, authentication, and issuance procedures for drivers’ licenses and other identity related documents. This act was passed with the purpose of fighting terrorism.

The law sets forth new requirements for state drivers’ licenses and ID cards.

The department of homeland security began implementing phase one of this act in 2013, almost ten years after the act passed. There are four planned phases with only one that will affect most US Citizens.

This coming October, all United States citizens will be required to have a Real ID administered to them by the DMV, to fly within the US.

That last sentence isn’t quite true. You don’t need a Real ID to board a plane or enter a Federal Building as long as you present a valid US Passport.

The whole Real ID scam is just the Feds trying to link your SSN to your ID so they can better track your finances.

Real ID just sounds off, as if it’s a product or something. I’m surprised it’s not called Smart ID. At this point why wouldn’t it take more privacy away. I swear people are going to be using implanted chips instead of credit cards or Real IDs in the next decade. Maybe those will be “smart”.
