Repair on Shelter Cove Road Slated to Begin Mid April, Says Supervisor Fennell

Watch out for Road workAccording to a Facebook post Humboldt County Supervisor Estelle Fennell made, slide repair for Shelter Cove road is set to begin in mid April.

She wrote,

This Tuesday, February 25th, the Board of Supervisors will sign off on the contract to conduct major repairs on the Shelter Cove Rd. slip out. Thanks to everybody involved in moving this huge project forward! Thanks also to the Roads crew for regular monitoring of the one lane part to ensure that it’s safe. And thanks to everyone who uses the road for your patience…….It won’t be long now!!
The Winning bid for construction went to McCulloch Construction Inc. This is a very big and expensive project. Construction alone is $2,597,656; Contingencies are allocated $260,000; and Construction Administration is estimated at $390,000… for a total of $3,247,656. The project is being funded mainly by Federal Highway Administration Emergency Relief Funds, which will contribute 88.5% . The Humboldt County Road Fund will contribute 11.47% and it will not impact the General Fund.

I am beginning to think that we can not afford our roads. What amount of taxes could ever pay for the maintenance of all our roads? It is getting too expensive. Eventually, I think I might have to walk to town.

The county can only fork out a measly 300,000 grand? No wonder 90 percent of the roads are total shit not to mention the gulch , ettersburg , briceland rd all the way to town. Guess we have to beg the feds for the money to repair those parts of the road too. If this slide happened in central or southern CA it would have been fixed immediately not 3 years later.

What about that drop out near the bottom of Alderpoint road? Seems pretty urgent … lots of hazard to residents. And if it slips further we lose access to the only veterinarian within 60 miles!

Well, let’s see Estelle…

Humboldt County failed to effectively tax or regulate marijuana for nearly 50 years, while thousands of persons moved to remote area of the county to set up “small farms” and “naked hippie commune” pot operations, and then drive monster pickups at high speeds, along with rigs full of supplies, water trucks, carriers hauling giant bulldozers, metal buildings, lumber and building supplies, and everything else people could possibly decide to buy, while they built giant hilltop homes, diesel powered greenhouses etc, diverted every trickle of water they could aim at a plastic tank, and, the result is crumbling roads, that are nearly impassable! I lived in Redway 5 years before a short section of Briceland Road was repaved, and that road nearly failed in the winter of 16-17…

Estelle: You have failed the people of Humboldt. Rex, you are even worse. Rex & Estelle need to drive to Alderpoint, or from Garberville to Laytonville via Bell Springs Cow Path… All these local roads have been pounded into oblivion, while the folks doing the pounding have gotten off Scott-free of taxes for a very long time!

Maybe build the “Estelle Fennell Memorial Toll road” from the Eel River Bridge in Lower Redway, to the sea! $10 to drive on this, the most unsafe and crazily driven “road” in creation… The most dangerous road West of the Shop-Smart parking lot…

The roads are terrible everywhere even in the cities and the counties you cannot blame are supervisors for all those problems it’s only so much money this is why the federal government needs to kick in big-time a weather and earthquakes do so much damage do you want the County taxes to go up Sky High I don’t think anybody wants that

And, it’s clear to me that while many are on disability, AFDC, Soc Sec and Gen Asst, none, no matter how much they make or take, want to ever pay for anything… Meanwhile, they keep on electing people who don’t do anything about anything, while the candidates toot their own horns, and everyone else apologizes for their lame leaders, blames all evil on “earthquakes and bad weather”, and demands more help from “the government”…

Humboldt: you gotta love it!

Estelle announces this now to boost her campaign. But if you look deeper she is consolidating her campaign base in Fortuna.

So, no state gas tax money was used? They must be saving it for something nice.

Estelle (and all the BOS) should be indicted for their criminal conspiracy to defraud the citizens with their illegal alteration of a law passed by a vote of the people. The tax measure re: cannabis
Thank you Ed Denson for fighting and winning the court case

🕯🌳Well if you mention the word tax around here the Republicons get in an uproar then they start bitching about the roads or that the liberals are taking all your money. So it’s a no win situation. 🖖🐸👍🏽🇺🇸

It’s the fact that we already pay taxes and see nothing for it because the money is squandered , so when the government wants to tax us more the response is “ fuck you “. The people yelling loudest to raise taxes are people who don t pay taxes at all

California has the second highest gasoline tax and the 5th worst roads in the nation. Newsomes office championed sb1 so California could rebuild our infrastructure stating that we need to be in charge of our future as we can’t rely on federal funds. Yet here’s another project paid for by federal funds. Which I’m glad somethings getting done but my point is Mexico has better maintained toll roads than California which is supposed to have the 5 or 6 largest economy in the world. It’s not that I’m against taxes, I’m just against the government wasting 90 percent of the revenue on non essential things. The weight fee on big rigs alone is stagering, the slow lane could almost be paved out of gold with the fees charged.

Hurray! Let’s fix the roads only to have excessively large convoys of overkill overtime officers destroy them again!

This single repair is costing, in the neighborhood of, $20,000 for every man, woman, child, and dog living in the Cove. I wouldn’t be too fast to blame government.
