Mendocino County Sheriff Warns of Phone Scam That Asks People to Leave Money Under Doormat

scam featurePress release from the Mendocino Sheriff’s Department:

On 02-19-2020, it was reported that citizens in the Ukiah area were receiving fraudulent telephone solicitations for donations to the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office.

These telephone solicitations are in no way associated with the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office and are an obvious phone scam with no legitimate law enforcement purpose.

The Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office does not solicit for donations over the telephone or in person so any such request should be reported.

The public is urged against making donations to these fraudulent telephone solicitations and immediately report any such behavior to local law enforcement.

It was also reported to the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office that people are being asked to leave donations under their front door mats for pickup. These requests are also fraudulent and the public is strongly encouraged to not leave money or donations outside of their home.

In an effort to combat identity theft and fraudulent donation requests, please do not provide any personal identifying information over the telephone to include social security numbers, bank account numbers, credit card numbers, or your personal address.

Sounds like something that the Republican Party headquarters cooked up. “It’s for the Wall”.

Thank you for your comment, I get slammed every time I mention that political comments are not necessary, not to mention relevant, to each and every news story.

You think I’ve made my point? Is the Liberal Basher going to continue with his bs ? Are the conservatives going to call him out also? We’ll see…stay tuned.

I find it very interesting the reaction I’ve received versus the mostly non-reaction the Liberal Basher has received.

Do you really believe that posting nonsensical comments at every opportunity, no matter how unconnected, will change anyone’s behavior? Has it stopped you? That is even more irrational than Trump’s tweets, which at least are reactive. Pro active trolling- what a concept!

Don’t feed the trolls guys. Trolls come in all shades of blue and red and they disguise themselves in the others clothing also. So it’s good to develop a sense of who is trolling who and just… don’t feed the trolls.

Oh Christ give it a break. Chide me all you like, you’re wasting your time.

And where were all of you enlightened Confucius babblers when the Liberal Basher had something stupid to say every day? Certainly not spouting Confucius pearls of wisdom. Interesting…

Are you there when the CON-servative or Republi-CONS bashers have their one liner insults going either? Of which there have been a few consistently doing for years? Of course not. There is always an element of that from either side. As has been quoted previously-

“Don’t complain about the snow on your neighbor’s roof when your own doorstep is unclean.”

Trolling, while perhaps fun for the irresponsible and immature, isn’t very helpful or useful. Commenters trying to provide helpful information, even when wrong, are better than the trolls that are only expressing their own frustration.

Guest has a fairly good idea. This scam is almost certainly perpetrated by someone that lives close to the victim, or at least knows where the victim lives, if, that is, they tell you to put the money under the front door mat. If you’re serious about catching the person(s) using this scam, go ahead and tell the caller the money is under the front mat and wait for them to pick it up. Prepare appropriately (gear, backup, etc.). Remember that they are probably teenagers, so don’t just shoot them.

The last time I got a similar call like that I asked the caller if this was a recording, and he broke his monolog and actually started talking with me. I told him his action could scare someone, and also that there are people in the world that had the skills to reverse track him and extract revenge should they desire.

When someone calls asking for money tell them you’d be happy to consider their request if they send you something in writing. Don’t give out an address or name. Tell them they’re out of luck if they don’t already have your information. You can also ask them for their web site. Nearly every legitimate organisation has a web site.

Never send/give anything to anyone that contacts you by phone, unless you know them or their organisation. If they are soliciting by phone tell them you don’t do business by phone. If you are not very good at determining which calls are scams, just assume it’s a scam.

“If you are not very good at determining which calls are scams, just assume it’s a scam.”

Get a free call blocking app such as “Should I Answer” and use it. I used to receive 3-5 unrecognized calls a day, at least, but after using this app (screen you calls and only answer you recognize while letting the rest leave a voicemail which I can then assess as worthy of a call back or not) I hardly get any. The scammers, like all predatory beasts, realize there are easier prey.

This isn’t partisan as it addressed at the government as a whole, just remember the same people who cant stop telephone scammers are going to change the temperature of the planet with just another little tax.

Anyone stupid enough to leave money under the doormat deserves whatever they get .
I mean how dumb can you get ?
Why don’t you leave some money under your doormat for the homeless and I’ll come and get it.
