Telegraph Ridge Volunteer Fire Protection District Board Member Urges a ‘Yes’ Vote on Measure U in Letter to the Editor

Welcome to our letters to the editor/opinion section. To submit yours for consideration, please send to [email protected]. Please consider including an image to be used–either a photograph of you or something applicable to the letter. However, an image is not necessary for publication.

Letter to the EditorNobody likes a tax increase-especially during the current economic downturn but I’m asking my neighbors served by the Telegraph Ridge Volunteer Fire Protection District to please vote yes on U in the upcoming election. When the district was formed by concerned residents 30 years ago they didn’t make a provision for the tax rate to be adjusted from the current rate of $30 per parcel ( $10 per unoccupied). The current revenue barely covers insurance ,Worker’s compensation and general operating costs which like everything else has increased over time.

I am periodically thanked by people for my participation on the board ( since 1997) and donating the service of my Bbq catering business to our annual fundraiser which I appreciate, but I explain that my motive for helping is selfish-I want a quick response in the event I have a medical emergency, auto accident or in the event of fire. The members of the Department and board are all non-paid volunteers who feel that the department is necessary for the safety and well being of our community.

We need U!

Thanks,
Moses Danzer, Bd.member of TRVFPD

P.S. I invite the person who is anonymously posting “no on u” signs and defacing our signs to attend a meeting or join the department to engage in a more constructive manner.

🕯🌳It might be that the individual in question might not like something else attached to the bill?🖖👍🏽🇺🇸 And doesn’t know how to go about bringing notice to it. Just saying. 🕯

Willie,
It can be hard trying to communicate sometimes. I know this district update and improvement process has been under construction for quite some time. Surely, there have been opportunities to bring forward any issues or concerns. Too bad for someone that didn’t figure out a way to make their needs known by now.
Onward though.
A thirty year old dream has become unsustainable. Folks that are given such great service in such a remote area must really and truly understand that $30/parcel doesn’t even begin to touch on the needs of their ALL VOLUNTEER fire department’ costs. The individuals on the department donate time and money so the community of Telegraph Ridge has emergency services, lots of it.
At the very least, the community should embrace and support this project. It may save lives and property.
Vote YES on U

Sad, there are so many incredibly wealthy growers who live in the area who give nothing to the dept. The same is true across the county. Do not believe the myth that growers give lots back to their community . I have been in my local fire dept for years . it thrived when blue collar loggers lived here and dwindled when growers started moving here. Even when growers join the dept they rarely show up for calls, tell the community they’re heroes and use the radio given to them as a police scanner for the camp raids.

Wow, there’s a shocker. The people you talk crap about won’t give you their money? Who would of thought? I’ve seen growers drop mad cash at their VDF, but maybe their VFD didn’t spend their time bashing their community?

Actually it’s a fact that the growers in the TRFPD have been quite generous, and donated substantially to the fire department.

It would make more sense to have parcel taxes based on parcel value. You might get more votes that way too.

🕯🌳So even though you pay your local firefighters the politicians want to use them to increase the cost of your land taxes? Is that right? 🕯

Yeah,sure

When a Special Tax is enacted the monies go into an account that the entity draws from, with oversite.
Who is paying local firefighters? Donations alone usually doesn’t cover much. What is your point Willie? You sure have a lot to say about the goings-on in Southern Humboldt as you reside in Fortuna….kinda strange..

Yeh and how did TRFD show their appreciation to the growers they screwed over the guy who went around and asked all the growers to donate and he built the new fire station. Now you want to raise taxes 800% to cover your failures.Bad dept. leadership don’t know if I can support it.

As of Tuesday morning 2/19 every YES on U sign between the Mattole River Bridge has been stolen. The only sign left was a NO on U sign. So much for honoring democracy and respecting each other’s First Amendment rights. But hey, why would a thief give a rat’s behind about other people’s free speech rights?

The Yes on U signs were all made and put up by unpaid volunteers with permission of the landowners. I fully support the opposition’s right to express his view, but not his crime of taking away someone else’s.
