The Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office SWAT team gathered at the Garberville Sheriff Substation about 9 a.m. for a large operation. There are reports of two ambulances, a Fortuna K-9 unit and stun grenades being seen by passing community members.

In what we believe is a related action, a California Highway Patrol helicopter is heading towards the area. But, we have not been able to confirm this is connected.

Samantha Karges, spokesperson for the Sheriff’s Office would only say, “[T]here is a SWAT operation happening today. No further details at this time.” Several readers have told us they believe this is related to a homicide. However, we have not been able to confirm any homicide.

Around 10:15 a.m. the SWAT team left the Garberville area.

UPDATE 11:30 a.m.: The helicopter is now circling the China Creek area.

UPDATE 12:20 p.m.: Reports over the scanner indicate law enforcement is looking for a murder suspect who is driving a red 4-wheeler headed towards Briceland. The suspect is reportedly armed with an AK-47.

UPDATE 1:56 p.m.: According to scanner traffic, officers have located the quad but not the suspect. A K-9 was requested. The helicopter is now headed back to Redding.

UPDATE 3:08 p.m.: The Humboldt County Sheriff’s Department spokesperson Samantha Karges sent us the following statement, “The Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office is in the China Creek area serving a warrant. Citizens are asked to avoid the area while law enforcement works. Residents who observe anything suspicious should contact the Sheriff’s Office. This is an active investigation. More details will be released when available and appropriate.”

Eh ? Stun grenades have a big flash and explosion, but no shrapnel. They are designed to dis-orientate and temporarily blind people.

You chuck a grenade into a room before you go in.

Out of respect for the children and family please refrain from including the kids in this discussion. This information is not relevant to the case and it should be removed out of concern for the children’s safety and well-being.

Go get him yourself before he kills someone else, Rambo. Sheriffs don’t seem to mind when the public helps out .

As one that completely agrees with the first amendment, that says that a reporter can report anything as long as it is the truth, I still seriously question if some reporting should be done.

I have always said that with extreme privilege comes extreme responsibility. If a news reporter finds out how to end the population of the world by some simple task, should they report it and let the chips fall where they may, or should they do the responsible thing and not publish it.

It would seem to me that if something as obviously critical as an assemblage of emergency equipment such as described above that there is something extremely dangerous afoot. If a reporter reports something like this and someone ends up getting killed, or an extremely dangerous person escapes, it should make them feel terrible. I hope that is not the case.

Reporting on convoys has always been a staple of RHBB. The government doesn’t get to keep their paramilitary operations secret from the public.

Kym,
You know that I trust you, but I wish you had told us that you were in close contact with the law enforcement. I actually suspected that, because I know that you are a good person. Still, it makes me uncomfortable that some reporters don’t take the time to report responsibly.

I interpret Ernie’s comment as saying that Kym is helping a murder suspect possibly evade capture or prepare for a law enforcement encounter (although I’m sure that isn’t her intention). But doing so in a polite way.

It wasn’t immediately clear and I’m much relieved Ernie brought it up and Kym answered as she did.

To be informed that there is likely police activity in your neighborhood and an armed and dangerous individual is involved keeps people safe.
Does anyone really think the bad guy is checking RHBB to see where the cops are? Ernie, you have it wrong here. No one wants to warn this guy. The whole community wants people like him in jail, and sadly even with all the law enforcement on earth we only seem able to lock him up for a minute.

The only cell service out China Creek is past the second bridge left fork going up the hill immediately before the 90 degree curve. Doubt he’s connecting with anyone.

Nice work Jon. No matter how bad this guy might or might not be, you gave him good advice that perhaps saved his live, or someone else’s. At the very least you turned a serious situation around and helped it to a safe conclusion.

I am deeply sorry this is Ryan. He was my neighbor. That kid has had a heck of a rough life. As I understand it based on info from others over many years, (“rumors”), Both his parents were involved with heroin and his mother tried to kill him. If true, 1) you can understand the anger, 2) you can understand the hatred of women, 3) you can understand the overwhelming low self esteem. This person has been soul-murdered. But I certainly believe he can get over it. True, he has a big debt to pay to society, apparently, but he can make it back in a good way, in my strong opinion.
You, reader, are really blessed not to have walked in his shoes. Please keep up the good work, and try to recognize the love that is in your heart.
