I applied there once. Terrible treatment. A woman was in charge.

She pretended to invite me for an interview then took it back and disappeared. Very unprofessional to say the least.

Same email address too. Nothing ever changes in Scumboldt.

The Clarke is under new management and is growing in all sorts of exciting directions. The woman of whom you speak has not worked there for many years. The email address is not a personal address but a “general delivery” email address used by multiple members of staff, as is the case with many businesses.

Unfortunately, nonprofits are rarely in a position to pay higher wages. It is rarely possible to get grants for operational expenses such as staffing.

Believe it or not, some people accept lower-paid positions because the nature of the work is important to them. If money is your only measure of value, your horizons are by definition going to be somewhat limited. For nonprofit staff to be paid higher wages, more people need to donate to or buy things from those nonprofits and more grant-giving organizations need to fund operational expenses. The Clarke cannot raise money through admissions fees, as our mandate from the museum’s founder is that no admission fee be charged. And I can only imagine the howls of protest that would go up if the City were to levy additional taxation to make more funds available to cultural institutions like the Clarke. But if you have some viable ideas for how we can increase our revenues to increase staff compensation, we’re all ears.

While making money is not everything being able to make a living wage is. I have heard that crap for years now form people that don’t need to make a living wage because their spouse makes enough money or they are rich. That comment is out of touch with reality. Government need to quit over taxing and over regulation so businesses can afford to pay a living wage.

That’s a fine sentiment for for-profit businesses but non-profits are a different story. Also, not everyone has a spouse, and far from everyone is rich.

This is a part-time position, and we have had a number of interested people apply already, none of whom appear to be independently wealthy, so obviously some people have figured out how to make it work.
