I live right near there and I see so many people who, while they may stop at the stop sign, they typically impede into the bike lane. This is due to the fact that where the initial stop signs are, you don’t have a clear view up and down McKinleyville Ave. I had an Uber driver go straight through it one time because he had no idea there was a stop sign! Either way, I try my best to make in initial stop, then slowly roll forward, as at times there are either pedestrians, cyclist or skateboarders. Hope the kid is okay and the driver as well.

People need to be hyper-aware during the times kids are going to and from school.

Amen! Drivers dont want to go the speed limit which is 25MPH BECAUSE of kids walking to school. I don’t care how late you are, SAFETY FIRST!

Actually… It’s 15MPH.
(CA state driving laws state that you must slow to 10MPH BELOW posted speed limit for that street/section of street which is in a marked & recognized school zone.)

The speed limit also IS posted on signs in the area… 25 mph coming to school zone & 15 mph IN school zone.

I sure hope the young boy will be fine. People please drive carefully when the kids are out. Stay alert, sometimes they will not look good, and will run out in front of you. It is up to you as an adult to be in control 100% of the time. If it was the car driver’s fault I am sure they have learned a good lesson, if not, I feel sorry for the driver hitting that young boy. Slow down and give yourself a few extra minutes to reach your destination.

I agree with all the comments but I must say I believe that the schools and the parents need to be more Vigilant in teaching their children where they should be in what they should do unfortunately not all children pay attention and a ride out or they walk out in front of cars there’s no way for them to stop in time

The comment about teaching kids how to walk safely in traffic needs to be taken seriously. (McK is especially bad in this regard with schools located along Central Ave and feels a lot like looking out for downtown Eureka’s spaced out adult pedestrians.) I recently drove around the block, stopped and got out to talk with three boys who rode right out in front of my car without looking. I’d have spoken with their parents except it seems some parents now would take that as an affront. Schools need to sandwich this into their curricula!

I do it every day on morning “bus duty” and have done it for years. I tell the kids “you’re safer in the crosswalk so use it”.

Driving a car is a serious responsibility- Period. Take it seriously and be vigilant at all times….don’t assume kids or pedestrians are in charge. The giant metal automobile has the major responsibility as it’s considered a deadly weapon.

🕯🌳I’m hoping the boy is alright to but the article doesn’t clearly state whether it was a hit and run or do they have the driver? I know they give the description of the truck but that’s it?🛐🐸🕯

Doesn’t sound like the driver was arrested. It might have been an “accident”.

That’s not what the DMV says. According to the DMV school zones are 25 but sometimes can be posted 15. Would love you to cite the actual motor vehicle code, but pretty sure it’s not there.

This article is lacking too much specific scene info to have an opinion of fault(s). Was the young adult walking riding skate boarding running? Was the driver following all rules of the road and the two collided? Wait for more info folks.
