“Science at the Marsh” King Tide Event Taking Place on February 9th

This is a press release from the City of Arcata:

The City of Arcata invites the community to a special event coinciding with King Tide events occurring on Saturday, February 8 and Sunday, February 9.

All are invited to join City staff and Humboldt State University’s Department of Oceanography at the Arcata Marsh Interpretive Center for “Science at the Marsh” on Sunday, February 9 from 9:45 to 11 a.m.

At this event, Dr. Jeff Abell, Dr. Tamara Barriquand and Dan O’Shea will discuss climate change and other local and global effects of rising sea levels, as well as how short term and geological scale phenomena interact to affect the community. Attendees will also gain an understanding of the mechanics of tides, including King Tides and how they demonstrate what “normal” sea levels could look like in the future. Participants will also have the opportunity to photo-document the King Tides as they are approaching their peak at approximately 12:06 p.m.

The City continues to seek community assistance with photo-documenting water levels on Arcata Bay and in local creeks and streams during the King Tide events occurring Friday, February 8 and Sunday, February 9.

Photographs of these tidal events can be uploaded to the City’s King Tide Community Observation GIS Story Map, which can be found at cityofarcata.org with a King Tide Guide and tips for mobile documentation of tide levels. Photographs will also be accepted by email at [email protected]. When emailing, community members are encouraged to designate the photograph location.

123 images of the King Tide events that occurred earlier this month have been received, and the City would like to thank those who have participated in helping staff prepare for sea level rise.

“Science at the Marsh” is free and open to the public and will take place at the Arcata Marsh Interpretive Center, located at 569 South G Street in Arcata.
