Hwy 96 Remains Closed

Slide on Hwy 96.

“A slide has completely covered the westbound roadway with mud, debris, and rocks,” says Caltrans. “Please check QuickMap before you go for the latest road conditions.”

Press release from Caltrans District 2:

The road continues CLOSED at the slide site located at approximately 4 miles west of Happy Camp in Siskiyou County. The recent winter storms added snow and debris to an already overloaded area extending to the roadway.

Construction crews are working to move a large amount of material off-site while continuing to monitor slide activity.

The road will reopen once Caltrans and Contractor Roger Brown Construction deem safe for everyone involved. Thank you for your patience and understanding.

Why is that considered “west bound” 96? On the map highway 96 travels predominantly north/ south, especially from Happy Camp to Willow Creek.

I believe that would be due to the fact that US highway naming conventions designate even numbers for roads that are primarily East-West routes (think Route 66, I-10, I-80, CA-20) and odd numbers for primarily North-South routes (US 101, I-5, CA-99) so even if one of the East-West roads like 96 travels North-South for a while it is still referred to as Eastbound or Westbound.

the road generally travels East West up there before turning south as it continues down river. Happy Camp is a long way ( North) from Willow Creek

Oftentimes, roads are not straight.

Maybe if the end is west of where the highway starts? Anyway it looks like a full closure west of Happy Camp and lane closures east of it.

You are correct. If one lives in the Klamath canyon one goes either upriver or downriver.

Upriver is east, downriver west on 96 (as others have noted)
