Got Ideas for Safety Projects in Humboldt? Humboldt County Might Have Money for You

Press release from the County of Humboldt:

A fully assembled Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus is stood up, prominently displaying a "Measu

The Citizens’ Advisory Committee on Measure Z Expenditures, a group that advises the Board of Supervisors on Measure Z funds, is looking for projects that make Humboldt a better, safer place to live.

If you have a project idea that provides a public safety or essential service to our community, consider applying for Measure Z funds. Applications for funding are open now, and you will have until Feb.17 to apply.

Measure Z is a half-cent sales tax applied to most local purchases and was first passed by voters in November 2014, and renewed in 2018. Since then, the committee has received more than 200 applications for funding. Some of the projects that have been funded by the Board of Supervisors include:

  • Hiring more than 40 Sheriff’s Office personnel, including resident deputies and school resource officers
  • Maintaining ambulance service on Highway 299
  • Innovative project with Eureka Police and the Department of Health & Human Services regarding homeless services
  • Drug Task Force and School Resource Officer for Fortuna Police
  • Waterfront Ranger to patrol Eureka open spaces, additional staff to facilitate the “Uplift Eureka” program, which is a homeless resource and support program
  • Hiring student resource and juvenile probation diversion officers for local schools
  • Allocating more than $6 million of equipment for volunteer fire departments
  • Providing more than $7 million for road improvement and safety projects, and more.

Learn more about the projects that have been funded by Measure Z.

The advisory committee will meet each Thursday in March to review applications and recommend projects for funding. The application asks you to describe your proposal, as well as your plan for sustainability in order for your proposal to carry on without relying on Measure Z funding. In addition, the application requires an explanation as to how the request is an essential service or for public safety.

If you cannot download the application you can pick up a copy at the County Administrative Office at 825 5th Street, Room 112 in Eureka. Please submit your application to the same address.

The next meeting for the Citizens’ Advisory Committee on Measure Z Expenditures is scheduled for January 23, 2019. You can sign up on the county’s website to receive notifications when new agendas are posted and when meetings are scheduled.

Somehow most of those road improvement projects involved putting up signs rather than actually improving roads.

Can we declare renewable, independent energy to be an essential service, and use some of that to build a public utility?

We need turn lanes on Redwood Drive at West Coast Road and at Bear Canyon Road (the Renner station).

You mean have a safe intersection that sits in front of the Cal Trans yard? Ha, that would take away from the quirkiness of RedGarb. Keep RedGarb unique.

But seriously, the easiest, most economicly Eco groovy thing to do is slow the speed limit.

Bees dislike asphalt, just slow down and save your tax payers some money.

People are going to die at that stop before they fix it.. it is insanely dangerous.

Just spend the money on a new or used speed limit sign…. problem solved. If it’s 25mph, that provides more than enough time to stop. It slows down your destination time by a few seconds and we wouldn’t have to suffer through weeks of road work and tax dollars.

Why is the speed limit there 40 or 55mph, but when you get to the chp station it’s 35mph?

this is all moot. Did anyone read Glenn’s advisory summary dated Dec. 8th? I noticed only the Mack Town Union provided it to the public. It summarizes that the annual cost of those 40 hires will be about 70% of next years measure Z revenue and in 5 years it will be 110%, meaning the 10% will come out of the general fund. This outcome is exactly what the professionals involved said would happen but ignored. the crazy part is most of those hires were for the jail and last time I checked the jail did not get any bigger. maybe Ernie can chime in as I know he will read this.

Sighs… that is probably true. Most of the funding is for law enforcement/DA/fire.

Here’s the data.

Has some funds for roads… most the money allocated is from ‘leftover funds’… so you know what that will be.

per your links most goes just to the HCSO for last year and this year. in just 5 years it is projected that “all” of measure Z plus some from the general fund will be going to those 40 new HCSO hires. these are grave mistakes that will bring major funding issues and need to be corrected now. and we already have major funding issues which is why measure Z was proposed. in the end measure Z will be viewed as a scam.

Wow, it’s almost like if the government taxes you more, then they grow and require more revenue to substain their growth. There’s a thought.

I actually started doing all my bulk shopping in Ukiah after Z just to make myself feel better about not getting farther over charged, my only form of civil protest. To the best of my recollection I’ve never voted for a tax increase of any kind in my life. And I don’t like cops. And public safety in humboldt has always been a joke. Unless busting pot is public safety. So what points were up my alley?

unless you are going to Ukiah for something else, that’s some serious protesting. but they do have an in-n-out burger. I was thinking boots on the ground and the general vibe the propaganda promoted would be right up your alley based on your comments.

FritoLay – HCDHHS already has a program, TAP, (transportation assistance program), that sends folks back to a destination, with food vouchers and such for along the way. There is an application process where they have to provide the name and number of the person who will be putting them up on the other end, verified before they can be given a ticket. They also have to have valid photo ID and lalala to qualify. But such a program is already in place to send folks out of Humboldt County should they want to leave.

I spend a crap ton at Friedman’s and tractor supply for work. I doubt the county will notice but I do. If you think I’m pro government then you only read what you want to hear. Which is typical for people who disagree with you.

How about a program that provides ONEWAY bus/train tickets to the numerous homeless people stranded here. Requirements being you must return to your hometown of origin. Project Go Home! Must agree not to return to Humboldt Co. for x amount of time. Provide meal vouchers only redeemable at designated bus stops or on train for specific time/route, vouchers expire on the date of arrival for final destination. Like the Amtrak bus to Martinez to catch the train always stops at Carl’s Jr. Partner with Greyhound and Amtrak, good publicity for them, Project Go Home! And if one were to depart bus/train before they reached “home”, well at least they wouldn’t be here!

Oh and repave, not patch, the Briceland/Shelter Cove Road from Redway to Shelter Cove! Along with getting rid of the homeless in town, it will increase tourism! For residents, potholes tear up our cars/trucks. In the long run, it would actually save the county money by reducing the amount of constant maintenance it requires now.

A roundabout for the intersection of Myrtle Ave and Freshwater Rd. It’s a very dangerous, highly traveled intersection, especially before and after Freshwater School begins and ends each day. It’s only a matter of time before a rushed person (with or without kids in the car) takes an unnecessary risk there and gets injured or killed.

And the Panther Gap rd. above Honeydew still needs major repairs. It also borders state parks and zigzags between district 1 and 2. The fancy temp by pass is still inappropriate and scary. All the lower Mattole roads are badly decayed, matter of fact. The hardship of gap road(second winter) is really hard on its residents and rigs, please fix.
