Press release from the City of Eureka:

Today, the City of Eureka has announced that they will be submitting an application for HGTV’s new show, “Home Town Takeover,” slated to air in 2021. The popular HGTV television show, “Home Town,” highlights Ben and Erin Napier’s work restoring historic houses. The show’s recently announced spinoff mini series “Home Town Takeover” takes the Napier’s efforts to the next level – tackling improvements at multiple sites across a small town over the course of 6 episode special series.

HGTV and the Napiers are requesting applications from communities with less than 40,000 residents that are unique, have a passionate local community, and historic buildings and architecture that are in need of renovation and restoration.

“Eureka has these attributes in spades,” said Eureka’s new City Manager, Dean Lotter. “The breathtaking Victorian architecture, Eureka’s historic waterfront, and engaged citizenry make Eureka the perfect candidate for the show.”

While parts of Eureka’s Old Town and Downtown have experienced facelifts over the past few years, there are still buildings and homes around the community that could use focused restoration efforts.

“We have a variety of different types of building – old businesses, historic old homes, and governmental buildings – that could really use some extra love and attention,” said Eureka’s Community Services Director Miles Slattery. “While we’ve made great strides improving Eureka’s business districts, there is still work to be done.”

To apply, the City will submit a video that showcases the homes, businesses, and public areas that are in need of a makeover, as well take viewers on a tour of the city that features the residents and business owners who love Eureka.

“This is a great opportunity to bring national attention to our community, to prioritize the restoration projects that are most important for improving our local aesthetics, and to share some optimism and excitement as we collectively envision our future,” Eureka City Mayor Susan Seaman said.

Councilmember Leslie Castellano added, “I’m really excited about Eureka’s potential as a candidate for this project. It’s a fun opportunity that could provide some real local benefit. Why wouldn’t we throw our hat in the ring?”

If you’re interested in participating in the process, or have footage of Eureka that you’re willing to share for this effort, the City of Eureka is asking anyone interested in supporting a coordinated application development effort to contact Emily Kirsch via email ([email protected]) by the end of business on Friday, January 24, 2020.

They’re looking for videos? I have one of a tweaker pooping through, yes through, a cyclone fence right by Costco. Should I send it directly to HGTV?

I think this will be swell. I can’t wait to see Eureka covered in Cannabis Infused Cosmetics!

All my model friends are raving about them!

A makeover will improve Eureka, a whole bunch!

Good luck Eureka! I hope you win!!

Even a few small improvements are a step in the right direction. I just hope these hosts are more in to restoring historic homes instead of gutting and modernizing them.

I had an old victorian restored in Eureka. Now it’s so nice I’m afraid to rent it out. I’ll probably rent it out for adult living. Crazy as it sounds those folks do in fact take pretty good care of their living quarters. I know this from personal experience with another house used for that purpose. I guess when you have nothing, and you’re given the chance to have something, like a place to call home, most people appreciate it and show it by being respectful and treating property well.

Typical liberal mindset. If you can’t squeeze out more federal taxpayer dollars, con it out of Hollywood. Mass media has all the answers. Why not Big Brother Semper Viren’s, or Survivor Woodley Island? Or lure the Joker sequel, as Eureka has angry white men in spades.
How about this idea, outsider City Manager, CREATE SOME JOBS.
We need full time career positions in this town, not more L.A. style PR stunts or contracts for Danco and their inbred ilk.

Typical conservative mindset. It can create jobs if improvements done, cause wtf wants to invest any business, in a rotting decrepit little city?

🕯🌳I think its already started with the murals from some of the local artists. You could run a tour show casing them and ending at some kind of exhibit or something. Just a thought. 🖖👍🏽

Cities need less money spent on gentrification and more spent on genuinely affordable housing, don’t you think?

Maybe the state needs to cut the bureacratic burden and allow private builders to build “affordable” housing at an “affordable” price.

Does Eureka have a street department? One would never know. Get off a handful of main thoroughfares and is third world.

I wonder how expensive it would be to use Imminent Domain to take the Balloon Tract from the Arkleys and give it to someone who actually wants to develop it. Those slimey fuckers have been holding it hostage for three decades and its made the Downtown area impossible to properly develop.

But how can the idea of man made climate change sea level rise and developing places that will prospectively be unusable coexist in the same mind?

If the Arkleys were concerned about sea-level rise, WTF would They have bought the property in the first place?

If you or I had purchased a property that required extensive cleanup, and then just refused to do it, we would be declared a public nuisance. They did just that in the Baloon Tract. Its an attractive nuisance, an eyesore and a public safety hazard.

A: Those things have nothing to do with the reasons the Arkleys haven’t developed the Balloon Tract. They are waiting for somebody to waive the mandatory cleanup required to convert the zoning to mixed-commercial/residential, or to do the required cleanup for them. They are literally holding the property hostage.
B: Even if we assume that sea level rise will will effect the property in the near future, there are paliative measures that can be taken. Sea walls, building on elevated piers, ect. The entire country of The Netherlands is built on infill.
C: The Arkleys have already wasted close to 30 good years acting in bad faith, during which sea level was no issue for this area at all.

One impossible hurdle would likely be that the places they renovate would need to increase sizable in value as a result. As the old real estate saw goes, location, location, location. In the end they would spend a lot of money to renovate but the return would be that the property is still located in a sub par market and would be lucky to recoup the cost. But they would be guaranteed a roller coaster of a ride if they try.
