This is a press release from the Six Rivers National Forest:

EUREKA, Calif. – As part of an ongoing public engagement process, the Six Rivers National Forest (NF) will be hosting a public meeting on Thursday, January 23 in Gasquet to solicit input on the proposed Six Rivers Hazardous Fuels and Fire Management Project (Fire & Fuels Project).

The Fire & Fuels Project is not a single action—it will involve a series of vegetative hazardous fuels reduction and fire management treatments across the forest, targeting shrub fields, woodlands and small trees with stems less than 12 inches in diameter, authorized by one federal decision.

The goal of the project is to guide the use of fire as a management tool and cultural and ecological process. This public engagement meeting focuses on the Gasquet Ranger District/Smith River National Recreation Area, and is scheduled for January 23, 2020, from 10 am to noon, at the Gasquet ranger station (10600 Highway 199). This forum provides an opportunity for the public to comment on the proposal and share values and ideas for land and fire management, before a federal decision is made this summer.

The Gasquet meeting was scheduled in response to local interest in the proposed project, and other meetings will follow across the forest.

“We ask for your help and participation whether it be during planning or implementation,” said Linda Serret, acting district ranger. “From what I have seen, the strength of the Six River’s National Forest lies in its community and tribal partnerships, as well as its committed and capable workforce.”

The 60-day scoping period for this project began on December 20, 2019 and ends on February 18, 2020.

Not complaining because I know Six Rivers manages Dillon Creek Campground, but it is technically the Klamath National Forest, as the sign says. It’s just a little jarring right below the headline. Isn’t there a better photo available?
