[UPDATE 8:51 p.m.] The Roads Are a Mess: Here’s What We Know

Snow fell over much of the mountainous areas of the Emerald Counties early this morning and down much lower than predicted into some of the valleys.

Below is what we know as of 7 a.m. We’ll update as more information comes in.

Major Highways–Here’s What We Know:

(Most information below is from Caltrans’ Quick Map. If you are heading to Oregon, check their similar site.) Information in green is updated since 7 a.m.

    • Interstate 5: Open
    • Here’s a tweet from Caltrans about conditions on I-5 from 9:54 a.m.

    • Hwy 1: Open
    • Hwy 3:  Chains required and Closed at Scott Mt.
    • Hwy 20: Open
    • Hwy 36: Chains from the junction with Hwy 3 to 5 miles west of Platina
    • Hwy 96: Caltrans District 2 states, “SR 96, 5 miles east of Happy Camp (Siskiyou County) – Roadway blocked due to downed trees.”
    • Hwy 101: Open
    • HWY 162 (Covelo Road): Open
    • Hwy 169 (Klamath): Open
    • Hwy 199: Now open
    • Hwy 254 (Avenue of the Giants): Open
    • Hwy 255: Open
    • Hwy 271: Open
    • Hwy 299: open

Humboldt County Roads: Here’s what we know.

  • Alderpoint Road: Advised to carry chains.
  • Bair Road: Closed from 299 to Stover Road due to downed power lines.
  • Bald Hills Road: Closed from mile marker 14 to 27 due to snow.
  • Bear River Road: Carry Chains
  • Briceland Road: Carry chains.
  • Cannibal Island Road: Flooded
  • Eel River Drive at Hookton Road: Closed due to flooding.
  • Howard Heights: Flooded
  • Kneeland Road: At post mile marker 26, “closed due to multiple snapped poles, trees, and lines down in the road. This will be south on Kneeland Road from Mountain View Road.”
  • Meridian Road: Closed due to flooding at post mile marker 0.80.
  • Mattole Road: Carry chains.
  • Redwood Drive: Closed near Dean Creek
  • Shelter Cove Road: Carry Chains
  • Stover Road: Closed due to downed power lines. 
  • Wild Cat: Carry Chains

there is a foot of snow in Kettenpom. Do not expect roads to be open anytime soon. If you do not have to be on road, don’t.

With regard to US 199 where is Marys Creek Bridge? I am very familiar with this highway, but have never heard of the Marys Creek Bridge.

If there’s 3″ in Garberville, 8-10″ above 2000′ in the hills around so hum? You’re doomed .
