3rd Annual Play Like Geno 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament Benefits Redway School

This is a press release from the Live Like Geno Foundation:

The Live Like Geno Foundation will sponsor its 3rd Annual Play Like Geno 3-on-3 Hoop Tournament on Sunday, December 8th with registration at 9 a.m. and games and contest concluding at 4 p.m. at South Fork High School Gymnasium,   6831 Avenue of the Giants, Miranda, California.  Registration is available online or at select community locations.

“No matter where Geno went his love for Southern Humboldt was huge. He really wanted to give back to the community that raised him.   It was a driving force for him to come back and do the [Basketball Jones Hoop] Camps  and he always talked about making sure he was still present and involved in the community. So it’s great that we’re able to do this tournament to keep that going,” said Gene Cotter’s wife Tiffany Cotter, and Executive Director of the Live Like Geno Foundation, “That [Redway] court was a special place for him because he fostered his skill set and the already almost innate love he had for basketball to become the player that he did…because he was there sun-up to sun-down! He always emphasized competing 5 on 5 basketball against kids that were older makes a better player, more than just shooting alone on a hoop in a backyard, so he would be so excited about the revival of the Redway Courts.”

Play Like Geno is a 3-on-3 basketball tournament for youth and adults to fundraise for the continued revival of the Redway Elementary outdoor basketball courts for the youth and community.   Pricing for adult teams is $120 and youth entry fees are $80 per team, with a maximum of four players. Individual and team walk-ups are welcome.  All participants will be given an event t-shirt at check-in and will need to sign a waiver prior to playing any games. Participants under 18 will need guardian or responsible adult to sign waiver. Pre-registration is available online and in person at Blue Moon, Chautauqua, Dazey’s, and The Lost Frenchman.

The six divisions include: 7-10 year old Youth Co-Ed, 11-12 year old Boys, 11-12 year old Girls, 12-14 year old Boys, 12-14 year old Girls, Men’s Open League (ages 18+), Womens Open League (ages 18+), and Over 40 League. Playing Like Geno is an upbeat and fast moving style of play and the rules reflect that intention. Games are 20 minutes long or the first to 15 points; and in the case of a tie, a sudden death overtime is enforced.   All teams are guaranteed three games. There will be awards for the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place teams in each division, as well as prizes for “Best Dressed” and shooting contest winners.

“Geno’s legacy can be seen by how much of an impact he had on all of North Coast basketball from Santa Cruz all the way up to Del Norte. If you look at his coaching tree and all of the people that went through [Basketball Jones Hoop] Camps that are now involved with basketball, it’s tremendous,” said Beni Coma, Gene’s childhood friend. He continued, “The great part about the foundation is that we get to continue to keep Geno’s name, spirit, and energy alive with something tangible. It’s so nice to see his legacy live on in the Redway Courts, the Hollister Courts, and soon others that will have Geno’s stamp on them for many years to come. The overall lasting effect of the Live Like Geno Foundation is that it’s promoting Geno’s energy, love, and passion for the game, so his legacy is still affecting North Coast basketball,”   Beni Coma was Geno’s teammate, CIF-North Coast Section Basketball Championship, and Men’s Basketball All Conference player at Humboldt State University.

Gene Cotter’s family and friends to honor his memory and continue his legacy of living with Passion, Positivity, and Purpose created the Live Like Geno Foundation. The Foundation is committed to bringing positive, educational, and athletic opportunities to youth in California communities, in part by refurbishing basketball courts for local youth. Currently, we’re working with the Southern Humboldt Unified School District to fix up the outdoor courts at Redway Elementary School. There could be no more fitting tribute than to revive the place where it all began for Geno and give the gift of hoop to a whole new generation. We invite you all to Mission Up with us for this cause!   If you have any questions about the Foundation, this event, or future Live Like Geno events please visit the website at www.livelikegeno.org.

Come out to South Fork Friday and Saturday for the Gene Cotter memorial basketball tournament too. Games start at 3:00 Friday. Don’t forget to support the booster club at the cub cafe where they’ll have lots of good food.
