From D Street, the Cowboy Canned Food Convoy will parade through Old Town before returning to unload their haul to Food for People staff and volunteers.

Families and children are encouraged to feed apples to the horses while the riders unload their donations.

Food for People coordinates an annual Holiday Food & Fund Drive on behalf of its network of 17 food pantries countywide, located as far north as Orick, south to Garberville, and east to Willow Creek and Dinsmore. All of the food that is collected within a community stays in that community to help feed local residents in need.  Food for People’s holiday collection bag, which is distributed the week of Thanksgiving in the Times Standard and Redwood Times, lists 50+ barrel collection sites around the county. The list is also available at www.foodforpeople.org.

Another popular component of the Holiday Food & Fund Drive is the Hunger Fighter Challenge, a friendly competition between local teams to see who can collect the most food and funds to help feed the community. The Redwood Unit will be the first Hunger Fighter team to have its donation weighed inofficially kicking off the Holiday Food & Fund Drive. See the Food for People’s website foodforpeople.org/hunger-fighter-challenge for more information on becoming a Hunger Fighter Team.

Organic gardeners better be aware that many horses are treated with Ivermectin or other pharmaceuticals for control of gastrointestinal parasites. Those chemicals are excreted through urine and feces and can kill earthworms in the soil.
