Senator McGuire Releases Statement Ahead of Today’s Emergency CPUC Meeting About PG&E’s Power Shutoff’s Last Week

Press release from the office of Senator Mike McGuire:

Senator Mike McGuire, whose district has been ravaged by massive fires and heavily impacted by power shutoffs, released the following statement regarding today’s emergency California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) meeting to hear responses from Pacific Gas & Electric leadership about the issues and concerns raised during and after last week’s Public Safety Power Shutoff.

“It’s beyond time to hold PG&E accountable. There is no greater challenge in front of the CPUC than their role as regulator of this privately-owned utility that has again proven it lacks the basic fundamentals to successfully execute such a large and complex planned outage.

“This is the third strike for PG&E – the first was the San Bruno explosion and cover-up, the second was the massive wildfires of 2017 and 2018, and strike three is the debacle of a response to these power shutoffs. PG&E has become too big and has failed us too many times. All options need to be on the table – including breaking up the utility.

“This is an all-hands on deck effort, and the Senate will advance solutions and protections in the coming weeks and months. The CPUC will need to take immediate action and advance desperately needed reforms on grid safety improvements, hardening and modernization and to ensure PG&E keeps its word to its customers about keeping them safe if and when a power shutoff is needed in extreme weather conditions.”

The Senate has created a policy working group that Senator McGuire will co-chair with Senator Susan Rubio to work on wildfire related concerns including insurance, power shutoffs and wildfire resiliency.

Dear Senator McGuire:

This is the time when the CPUC and the State Legislature cut Humboldt County out of PG$E’s bankrupt grip. By this, I mean that the County must be allowed to “nationalize” the Field’s Landing generating facility and all of PG$E infrastructure in the County so it can finally be operated by and for the people of Humboldt. Lord knows local ratepayers have paid for this infrastructure many times over! Like the Blue Lake Rancheria, it’s past time that we take the reins of implementing our own carbon-neutral future.

CPUC is useless. R-wild horse ranch on 36 spent over a million bucks installing solar that PG&E gave them permission to install. That solar project has been in the ground now for over a year and PG&E won’t give them permission to operate. PG&E now says lines must be upgraded…..So we wait and wait….PG&E moves R-wild to time of use….Still cant turn on solar… CPUC is like the UN…all it seems to ever do is condemn PG&E.

Am not a fan of politicians but gotta say Mc Guire listens to folks and acts on issues rather than just talking about them. I hope he knows we’ve got his back on taking on pge, throw the damn book at em and take away their corporate charter!!!

Personally i thought it was great how, during the fires, he helped set up donation funds that go through local credit unuons who then work with local non-profits who are actually doing things to help on the ground. He didn’t say dont give to red cross, whose bureaucracy often holds up getting items to folks in need, just heres a way to give directly to affected communities in need.

Everytime ive called his office with issue/question theyve responded helped. I may not be fond of politicians but we pay their salaries so why not at least call&see if theyll actually do somethinh to help ya.

McGuire is excellent. I agree. He is absolutely central casting for a concerned and dedicated Cali State Senator. Totally agree with him on PG&E. Safety and quality service to the public was sacrificed for shareholder payouts and this is what we get. Lousy infrastructure with frequent outages, massive, deadly wildfires and, to complete the package, an intentional blackout to force us all to bear the burden of their greed and mismanagement. Can’t make it up.

PG&E and their corrupt management decided to use cheap, antiquated equipment.
The City of Redding had power during the ENTIRE PG&E engineered blackout. Why? Because in it’s 100-year history, PG&E has only improved it’s bottom line, not reliable energy for it’s ratepayers.
Anyone who has ever had to deal with PG&E over property, water rights, or downright poisoning had to deal with tactics that would make a Costa Nostra henchmen nervous.
PG&E got bankruptcy protection while handing out millions in bonuses, while ratepayers got substandard, unreliable service. Instead of BONUSES, people should of been fired. And I don’t mean employees….I mean the “professionals” that wear $5000 suits and call lawyers when the sh*t hits the fan. Like the CEO, CCO, and CFO. Trace them by people who’ve worked on the field. People who’s lives are actually impacted by having their house burn down thanks to cheap transmission lines and lies from PG&E. That way, true change at OG&E will happen.
Otherwise, this M-O-N-O-P-O-L-Y needs to be taken over by the State.

PLEASE force some action. The CEO is defiant and continues to say how successful the PSPS was because there were 0 wildfires and now claims we should live with blackouts for at least a decade?! https://krcrtv.com/news/local/pge-ceo-tells-regulators-shutoffs-will-be-necessary-for-the-next-decade

It’s pretty obvious that the power was shut off in all of the areas that PG&E would rather not do business, due to the high costs and litigation involved.

PG&E is quite clearly over the line with the management of equipment and services, and, many, many more lawsuits will come into the light, over the next days. The losses to the public, and the extreme negligence of this corporation, will result in the eventual breakup of PG&E.

On the other hand, the State of California hardly seems capable of managing anything at all, not the highways, not the universities, not anything at all! I hope that the future includes new management, for the power grid, but with legislators like McGuire, I have to wonder if anything will ever improve, in California…

Blame game…enough failure to go around…PG&E to Newsom. Is not PG&E a regulated utility, and after 2-years, no one at the CPUC saw the shutoffs coming?

CPUC Commissioners make close to $150K/year, not including benefits. One would think they be all over this issue ahead of time.

As to Newsom…pay attention to the publics basic safety and infrastructure, and quit pandering to special interest like eating road kil, registering bullets, or selling fur coats!

Mike…you’re starting to roll with the party line, vice the leadership you used to exhibit that separated you from the other “politicians.”

Rates in California are the highest in the nation. California’s grid is third world quality. It’s going to cost Billions to fix the grid so that some wind will not cause problems. Newsome and the CPUC will be moving slowly to solve the problem.
Does anyone know if the Bankruptcy Court has the power to raise rates to fix the grid?
