Northbound 101 is snarled and one lane is closed after a red Ford Mustang and a grey Honda collided just before the Slough Bridge in Eureka about 8:50 a.m., according to witness Jessica Silva.

“The convertible just flipped sideways off the freeway [after the collision],” said Silva.

The Mustang was left in the center divide. According to the scanner, the Honda is in a gulch nearby.

The number one (lefthand lane) is currently closed.

Check Caltrans QuickMap for the latest information on how traffic is being affected.

UPDATE 9:10 a.m.: Humboldt Bay Fire is reiterating on Instagram, “Stay clear of the area fifth and V Victor Street in Eureka. A non-injury traffic collision is causing traffic delays on Highway 101 northbound.”

Tailgating is the mark of an unskilled driver.

My car was hit in the accident. The car was not tail gating nor was I. The car hydro plained and then spun out of control into a 360 across all 3 lanes into my lane. I was going below speed limit, in fact I was a a point of slowing down. No tail gating was happening here. It was accident, and niether negligence nor poor vehicle operation was in play here. The comments should be: “hey, glad both driving are okay.” Yeah, we’re both fine. Thanks

What speed was the hydroplaning car going?

The car was just entering the highway from V, so not very fast.

It was a scary sight to watch the whole thing.

Brooke, I witnessed the accident. I am glad you are both okay.

I stopped to tell an officer that I saw it, but I was told that wasn’t necessary.

Shh, you’re using facts. Facts will get in the way of the “why are people always tailgating me?!” crowd.

I am glad you are both ok, but the red Mustang had to be speeding or aggressively accelerating to have ended up across the three lanes. It looks like she gunned it into the corner that merges V st onto 101 North. you can see how early in the acceleration lane she lost control. Like she was trying to beat the traffic coming from the changing lights on NB 101..

It can be an annoying intersection, since you have to be going slowly to negotiate the corner, then have to get up to freeway speed as quickly as possible to merge across two lanes. You can’t safely or politely merge without going at least the same speed as the traffic you’re merging into, the first lane you have to cross exits onto 6th st, and it comes up pretty quickly. I’d assume the driver just mis-estimated their available traction, unless there’s some evidence to the contrary.

I mean, not speeding or aggressively accelerating, gunning, or beating traffic.

Hydroplaning can result from tires with too little tread depth, and/or driving too fast for conditions. Each of these is negligence.

Too fast FOR CONDITIONS, whether under the speed LIMIT or not is still bad driving. California law says so. No bullshit excuses. If you hydroplane….you were going too fast.

some folks just always want to blame someone. Makes them feel superior.
