Remember, in Spite of the Rains, Burn Suspension Still in Effect, Says Cal Fire

Press release from Cal Fire:

CAL FIRE Humboldt – Del Norte unit would like to remind the public the burn suspension is still in effect. Despite recent and forecasted rain in northwest California, we have not seen or expect to see significant wetting rains to reduce the overall risk of vegetation fire in our wildlands and urban interface. Warm dry weather is expected to return to our area Thursday through the weekend. Past catastrophic fires in Northern California have occurred in the fall and late fall (North Bay Fires- Oct 2017, Camp Fire in Paradise- Nov 2018, Tunnel Fire in the Oakland/Berkeley Hills- Oct 1991), even after rainy weather.

CAL FIRE will notify the public when the burn ban is lifted. Proper burn permits from North Coast Unified Air Quality Management District (NCUAQMD) will be required with possible CAL FIRE LE-5 or LE-7 permits when the burn ban is lifted

Project burning, including wildfire hazard/fuels reduction, will be conducted through special permitting and hazard mitigations.

For burn permit questions, contact the North Coast Unified Air Quality Management District at www.ncuaqmd.org or by calling (707)443-3093.

Visit www.fire.ca.gov and www.readyforwildfire.org for wildfire information and safety.

Everyone wants a pound of your flesh. I’ve been told by four agencies that a burn permit from them is all I need to burn, but I needed to get it from them, except Trinity County. CalFire, North Coast Unified Air Quality Management District (NCUAQMD), USFS, and Trinity County. Each one of them told me I needed a permit, but only TC told me a permit from any one of them was sufficient. Whatever. Be safe when you burn. Wet the area down if not wet, or wait for rain, like I do. Do it quick and put it out when you’re done. Cover your large piles and wait for the wet season. Or go to the dump.

Just get yourself a chair and a cooler with beer and hotdogs and call it a warming/barbecue fire. You will be good to go.

“we have not seen or expect to see significant wetting rains” I don’t know about up there, but around here I don’t think I could light anything on fire even with my cutting torch…
