Who Killed 71-Year-Old Hugh Duggins? $10,000 Reward Offered

Hugh Duggins

Hugh Duggins

When local resident, 71-year-old Hugh Duggins was found dead near Alderpoint Road far from his home early January 21, 2016, it wasn’t immediately clear that he had met with foul play. But eight months later in August, the Humboldt County Coroner’s Office revealed that he had died from “asphyxia by neck compression” which usually means a homicide where the victim is strangled either by hands or by some ropelike object.

Today, authorities are still looking for the person responsible and so are many of those who knew him.

They say Hugh was a generous man who loved life (and Scrabble.) According to one friend, not long before he died, in November of 2015, Duggins wrote, “[L]ike I told the doctor, I’m not clinging desperately to this life, not scared of death; I’ve had plenty of fun; never had to work a 9-5 job much; got to have money beyond my wildest dreams a coupCapture2le of times; had lots of great sex; I’ve loved and been loved; I can still walk and talk, think and work; got to ride this dirt ball around the sun 70+ years, you can’t expect much more than that.”

After years of his death being unsolved, a friend of Hugh Duggins decided to put out a reward in hopes of new evidence coming forward. He sent us the following,

Glad to see this up, I was wondering why I hadn’t heard anything about Hugh’s case. but yeah, a lot of unsolved stuff in this area, very sad.
Hugh was a tough old bird and worked hard through to the end.
He could fix anything and was always a challenge at the scrabble tournament, lol.
We miss you old Coot!

Murder Mountain is close by. Was this man involved in cannabis sales and production? Perhaps we need to look into some of these buyers who come up from the city to do business up here. Just a thought…

handy man huh????? fact he had his hands in pot as much if not more than anybody in A.P. That doesnt make hugh a bad guy, but truth should be told if someone is really trying to find out what happened to him. That really could be useful to somebody that was really entertaining the idea that it might of been a pot deal that went south !!!!

To strangle someone is a very personal crime. And it takes a strong pair of hands. So probably somebody was pretty pissed off at him, a male who probably sent him text messages or other forms of communication before he did it. Elementary.

Its About Time .3 years later.Humboldt County Sheriffs failed Hugh.Never any investigation never question anyone. The women living with him more than likely had something to do with his murder. she was seen walking up the street the next day arms full of lbs and other valuable. She was never questioned and retreated to rancho to snort her meth.shame on law enforcement he was a good man murdered and left along the side of the road . I guess justice is only for folks that live in town.
