Multiple Fires Burning Across Trinity County After Massive Lightning Storm Last Night

This morning, after a massive lightning storm (over 150 strikes last night in the Shasta Trinity National Forest alone) moved through the mountains of northern California, multiple fires are burning in Trinity County.

Bridget Litten, Public Affairs Officer for Six Rivers National Forest, said they had just finished an overflight of their area of responsibility and no smoke was seen. “Things could pop up later today,” she said but as of now there are no fires in that area.

Klamath National Forest to our north, tweeted, “September 5, 2019 morning update. After a night of thunderstorms and lightning, the Klamath National Forest is responding to multiple lightning fires on the KNF and assisting @CALFIRESKU.”

And Shasta-Trinity National Forest tweeted this morning they had “received 152 lightning strikes during this storm and is responding to several lightning fires.”

Below is a list of fires in their area which apparently stemmed from the lightning storm. Meanwhile there is a slight chance of more thunderstorms in Trinity County this afternoon, according to the National Weather Service.

Luckily the winds are forecast to stay relatively light. And temps will run 80 to 95 depending on elevation. If we were in a heat wave with high winds all those starts would explode. As is they should be able to corral them all with a little luck and alot of hard work. The coolish summer temps inland and lack of wind has been our saving grace so far.

Saw signs of fire coming over Forest Mountain (Hwy 3) on my way home in Scott Valley this afternoon. Looks like the Marbles have been hit, too. Storm last night kept many of us awake.

Fingers crossed

Yep if it was last year itd be a waaay different story. Hoping for the best outcome over the next 5 weeks!
It seems like they are staging water dropping aircraft all over the place instead of from a few set sites, the response time and availability seem better. Maybe its just me.
After last year i imagine the areas with the least resources close by really stood out.

That must have been a heck of a nite camping in the alps, anyone who was out there share some pics&story!

Myself, my partner and my friend were about 4 miles into the canyon creek trail when this thunder storm took place. Probably one of the most terrifying ones I’ve ever been in. Once the hail came down I didn’t even know what to think. So happy to be safely out of there. Worst night in the wilderness!

Keep it in perspective. It sounds like a wonderful experience. Everyone came out alive with no worse for wear, right?

2 of the three fires mentioned in the South Fork Unit are building up on plume size.

I’m sure both are closing in on 100 acres each.

I don’t see a lot of smoke from the Love fire though.

I was watching the plumes on Fork and Natural fires @ 230.

They’re definitely not updating those acres yet. They were easy 40-80 acre plumes. And I think that’s conservative. We shall see on the next update.

If I’m not mistaken with my view/geography it’s the NATURAL and FORK fires that grew the most.

70% humidity & 60 degrees at 8:45 pm near Iron Peak…there has been a very think layer of fog on the coast that will most likely extend inland overnight. Overnight humidity recovery will be good to hopefully slow fires down

This was taken Thursday afternoon. The fire was across the lake from the Trinity Center cemetery. A helicopter was getting water out of the lake and dumping on it.
