Man Who Assisted Teen Injured in Garberville Stabbing This Weekend Describes What He Saw

Last night, a youth was stabbed during a complicated family dispute on Pine Street in Garberville, according to Southern Humboldt resident Cody Dillon.

“[A]bout a quarter to 11 I heard someone yelling [for] help outside my house in Garberville,” he told us in a message. “I went out to find a [14-year-old] neighbor boy holding a baseball bat and bleeding from a stab wound to his chest.”

Dillon moved into action quickly. “I brought him into my kitchen and [laid] him down and applied pressure with a towel while my housemates who are volunteer firefighters called 911. I held his hand and kept him talking to me.”

Because scenes of violence require law enforcement to clear an area before medical staff can enter, a Humboldt County Sheriff’s Deputy had to come inside and confirm that the place was safe. Then the EMT’s were able to respond and assist the injured teen.

Dillon said in a post on Facebook, “I’m just glad I was able to help keep him strong through it. I’ll never be the same after tonight, and I’m so grateful that he didn’t die in my arms. Because deep down I was as scared as he was.”

Yeah. Let’s call a spade a spade! murrrrrderrrrrrr…separately, saying “I’m just glad I was able to keep him strong through it” has a little too much God-complex going on. Settle down, bro.

You left out the “help”. He said “…..help keep him strong…” . That shows he was not taking full credit. Geez….

Yeah, here in Eureka my wife and I have had our tires slashed, our door kicked in, the house robbed twice or three times, we were attacked by a group of people on our front lawn wielding pepper-spray, and a stun-gun, then an explosive device was thrown in our truck, and the EPD refuses to do anything because it’s a, “complex family matter.”

No, it’s not. My wife inherited her mother’s house, and these people wanted it. For the police to refuse to get involved because it’s a, “complicated family dispute,” is chickenshit at best, and criminal at worst.

Law enforcement around here needs to get a grip.

Article says complicated family dispute, and Cody says that the kid was holding a baseball bat when he found him. It is acknowledged that there was a dispute, but yet the mother is commenting on the fb post that it was as accident and that her son is ok. I don’t know how anyone else parents, but my teenagers aren’t playing or fighting with baseball bats and knives at 11 o clock at night. Sounds very scary and like the mom is making light of the entire situation. That is worrisome, as my kids go to school with these kids…I am so glad the kid is ok, but it definitely sounds like some counseling at the very least is needed in this household. I hope that there are some consequences as well, because intervention needs to happen before these boys become men. And Cody, you’re amazing!

That’s amazing to go to the young boys side and to help knowing you put yourself in danger and taking the boy in your house to help keep him alive. You have a very strong and caring heart. God Bless You

Curious what the CA penal code is for this. RIP Josiah 🙁

Dear JustFacts, no first responder should risk their own life by walking into a known violent scene. That’s the fact. Sincerely, the sister of two and the aunt of three first responders.

hrmm kind of what first responders are paid to do. risk their personal safety in order to help others. if they cant or wont accept the risk than maybe they shouldnt take a first responding job, maybe a second or third responder type of job. the fact that there was vfd present should have allowed for them to enter before waiting for a cop to say it was ok.

#1 not all first responders are paid. Me I like going home to my love ones after shift. If you are so great we could use extra hands if not get a education.

No they’re not. One of the first things that gets drilled into your head during first aid/cpr training is not to become part of the accident. Know all you can about the situation to protect yourself, and if it is not safe defer until personal danger is removed.

You should feel fortunate that no EMTs were injured by the unruly mob in that situation. Your narrative would have been much harder to sell.

What’s the status of the victim? Were there any arrests? Not interested in names or identifying info. The story though begs for caring people to know what has since happened.

The young man is home with his family. Everyone involved is still processing a traumatic evening. I plan on inviting him over for icecream next time I see him. He was the real hero of the night and deserves all the praise.

Oh for Pete’s sake. EMTs are not law enforcement. They do not carry weapons to protect themselves. Besides how effective can an EMT be if they are shot or wounded. Then the EMT would need an EMT. You are not the sharpest tool in the shed, are you?
