[UPDATE 10:16 a.m.] Eastbound 299 Backing Up After Boat Meets Bridge (Yep, Really!)
He said that traffic is backing up a bit. The CHP Traffic Incident Information Page reports there are flaggers directing traffic.
Please remember that information gathered from initial reports is subject to revision as more facts become available.
UPDATE 10:16 a.m.: According to the CHP Traffic Incident Information Page, the boat didn’t actually hit but the driver determined that the boat wouldn’t fit and backed up.
There are still traffic slowdowns in the area.

Hopefully it doesn’t take them a year to repair it like the excavator-sized dent last time…
Somewhere, a RHBB reader received a call regarding delivery of their houseboat;
“Hi, yeah, delivery is going to be a little late. Why? Oh you know, standard stuff…traffic, truck stops, weather…you know.”
Stuck in traffic…is the aBRIDGEd version.
No, he didnt spanned much time on it at all.
I believe that the CHP has clarified and noted that it was UNabridged.
😉
it was the the height of enjoyment.
Sweet
😂🤣😂🤣😂!!! That’s funny!
Good job driver.
I would have made a convertible house boat out of it.
It’s been done before
🕯🌳You’d think someone would have checked the route it was taking, but I guess………🌻
There are height limits on California highways. This outlaw trucker should follow the law.
The routes are checked when you apply for permits to move stuff like that. (due to length, height and width its likely a permitted load) The problem is when they work on, pave or even earthquake retrofit bridges. Often the clearances change and are not updated.
Sounds like the listed height and actual height probably differed. At least he didn’t just plow through at max speed then have to perma shut it down, which could of happened.
They installed new height signs for that bridge earlier this year after repairs for an impact last year. I don’t think it’s changed since then.
Actually CalTrans routed him this way. It was not his requested route. They rerouted him and 9 min down the road he came to a bridge with a height clearance less than his permitted height. He did not hit the bridge. He crept up to it and determined he couldn’t clear it, along with 2 pilot cars. He had to back up 2 miles with the road closed.
Since it was their mistake, it would have been nice if CalTran would have compensated him for his time.
I was wondering wtf is with all the cal trans and CHP and shit there. I was going the other way. Trying to head to trinity diesel via the bridge.
20 years ago (???) A guy built a beautiful ‘mini house’ in Blue Lake. Gorgeous redwood. Lovely construction.
Hired somebody to tow it (I think) to Ferndale (likely to the Fair).
Trucker didn’t make the overpass by about 2′. Looks like he hit it at 55 mph.
Debris everywhere… and nails. Car in front of me was off the highway with 4 flat tires.
I felt really sorry for the builder, half a years work… gone.
WHEW! That was a close one. Good eye driver! Your day could have ended up ALOT WORSE!
Loudest sound EVER: BGD forgot to heed warning sign indicating “low bridge ahead” and the top of the band truck got ripped open like a can of sardines! Yes, this really happened back in The What Exit State, New Jersey. Ask Jimee: he’ll tell ya.
House aboat a party on the freeway!! WOOHOO!!
Well, thank goodness the driver was paying attention. Unlike all these people; The Definitive 11Foot8 Bridge Crash Compilation

That was fun, thanks… like watching kittens.
The trick, obviously, is to hit it fast and keep on the accelerator.
Your observational note of their best tactics is hilarious.
That boat has been sitting at the end of south G street in Arcata staring at Humboldt Bay for a decade, unfinished. It finally had its hopes up for getting its feet wet in Trinity or Shasta Lake only to be rebuffed by Blue Lake. What a cruel world.
Then you have to see 11′ 8″s evil little brother…
Wish I felt sorry for them but considering their “Overwide load” pace car driver deliberately careened into an opposite lane in arcata along south G st.trying to run my friend off the road just so that houseboat could take up TWO lanes was illegal, dangerous and just an outright punk move. Color me surprised those jerks didn’t think their route through. Hope the CHP ticketed those fools. That Pace driver should have his license revoked.
Just so you understand the job of the pilot car ! His or Her job is to protect the motoring public from the load ! If your friend had been paying attention to their surroundings and the amber lights that Pilot Car would’ve never had to leave his lane! Sometimes Oversize loads need the whole road in Some situations to safely make turns and to avoid parked cars, bike riders , pedestrians and other things ! 98 times out of 100 when an accident involving an oversize load and another vehicle the other vehicle gets cited because they were at fault and didn’t yield to the amber lights ! Every state has an amber light law and most states post it on their HWY and Freeways and it applies to surface streets as well! And just for your information one of the pilot cars on that load was a off duty cop !
