Orleans Volunteer Fire Department (OVFD) Starts Construction on New Fire Station

Building the new Orleans VFW new Fire StationPress release from Orleans Volunteer Fire Department:

We Couldn’t Do It Without Our Community!

Thanks to Measure Z and the Humboldt County Fire Chiefs Association, the Orleans Volunteer Fire Department (OVFD) has started construction on our new fire station. We have permits in hand to build a very basic shell of a fire station on land donated by Orleans locals, Sue and Phil Sanders.

We owe many thanks to Josh McKnight of Trinity Valley Consulting Engineers, who has done all the design and engineering pro bono for us; to Tom Horn, owner of TT Construction, who has donated much material, equipment time, and labor; and to the folks at Whitson Plumbing, who have donated labor and equipment time to make this project a success.

In addition to these many business contributions, we also thank the hundreds of hours our Fire Department volunteers, (in addition to their duties of responding to emergencies, for free, at all hours of the day and night) have put into this project. Not only the OVFD volunteers have stepped up, but we have also been surprised and delighted with additional help from other folks in the community. This area may have only a few people, we may be spread out over hundreds of square miles, but when a project like this comes along, help shows up when you need it. Thank you to the greater community!

Our latest accomplishment was to break ground for the foundation and begin the preparation for the concrete pour. On Friday August 16, in very hot conditions, volunteers spread drain rock, established a vapor barrier, then spread sand, in preparation for the rebar and concrete work. Progress!

Next steps are to complete the rebar, bolts, and foundation preparation, complete the rough plumbing and electrical, pass a Humboldt County Building Inspection, and order concrete for the foundation.

Once the foundation is in place the OVFD will order materials for the construction of the building itself, counting on the support of Measure Z funding from the 2019-2020 cycle.

As a member of the measure-Z advisory committee, I can tell you that these folks worked very hard to develop a workable plan. They were very organized and dedicated to building their new station. They had to jump through many bureaucratic hoops, and they never lost sight of what they needed for their community. I am glad to see that they are finally able to get their shovels and hammers to work.

Good Job. You just can’t hold firefighters down! Congratulations!

“We couldn’t do it without our community”. Well, without a community you wouldn’t need a fire house!
