[UPDATE: Sunday] 73-Year-Old Man Missing in Trinity County

William “Bill” Lee Elliott

Suzanne Carpenter last saw her 73-year-old father,  William “Bill” Lee Elliott, on August 3.

“He moved here in March from Idaho,” she told us, but he recently was evicted from where he was staying. “I know he was super sad.”

Suzanne and her sister each received letter from him and one envelope at least  was stamped August 5. According to Suzanne, her sister who had his bank card was told in the letter to withdraw $500 per day until the account was empty. Suzzane says she was given information on the keys to his trailer.

When she and her husband drove to Lewiston on August 11, they saw his vehicle “just off of Trinity Dam Blvd. on a dirt turn off.”

They reported her dad missing. Inside the vehicle, she said they found his phone.  She said that law enforcement was able to access the phone.

“When they opened his phone, he took a few selfies with glasses on and with glasses off,” she explained which was unusual for him to do. And, on the phone, there was some worrisome indications. “He researched how to make a noose,” she said. Still, though the signs are worrisome, she has some hope. He had some Weaverville acquaintances, she believes that might have picked him up if his vehicle broke. In fact, she said, “He had an appointment on the 16th to have his car repaired in Weaverville.” His wallet is also missing.

Although, Trinity County Sheriff’s deputies have been searching for him–“They have been looking all over; they can not find anything”—Suzanne is worried that her father’s case will be lost in the concern over Daniel Komins, a hiker missing in the Alps. “They are doing most of their hunting for the lost hiker,” she said.

According to Suzanne, her father is approximately 5’10” and about 220-230 lbs. He has grey hair with receding hairline, wears glasses, smokes, 73 years old. “The last time I saw him he had shaved his goatee off so he only has a mustache,” she said.

“Please help us find him,” she pleaded. “He has three children and three grandchildren who miss him and are desperate to find him!…We love him.”

If you know anything at all please contact the Trinity County Sheriff’s Office at (530) 623-2611 and ask for Sergeant Detective Josh Ford.

UPDATE: Sunday: Press release from the Trinity County Sheriff’s Office:

On August 11, 2019, family members of William Elliott contacted the Trinity County Sheriff’s Office and advised that Elliott had not been seen or heard from since August 5, 2019.

Elliott had moved to the Lewiston area several months prior, although he no longer had a permanent residence in the area.

Elliott’s vehicle was located on August 11, 2019, parked on the shoulder of Trinity Dam Boulevard near State Route 299. The vehicle had been unoccupied and in good condition. Witness contacts showed that the vehicle had been in its found location, since August 5, 2019.

A search of the vehicle was conducted, but provided little information pertaining to William’s potential whereabouts. Several ground searches of the area near the vehicle were also conducted, and have thus far led to no new information.

There is no current information to suggest that William has been the victim of any crime. The Trinity County Sheriff’s Office is reaching out to the public; if anyone has had recent contact with and/or seen William, please contact Detective Sergeant Josh Ford at 530-623-8106 or by e-mail at [email protected].

Missing since the 11th and this is the first time we are hearing of this? How sad… I follow all the Trinity Facebook pages because my parents are elderly and live in Weaverville. This is the first I have heard about this, and he is a senior. Terribly discouraging. Thank you for posting this Kym.
May he be found safe and sound and quickly reunited with his love ones. Blessings to him and his family.

I live in trinity and in lewiston at that. This is the FIRST time I am hearing about this, and from a Humboldt county reporter. I’m disgusted by the fact that trinity hasn’t released anything about it!

See if you can contact the search team and get a photo of your dad to them on the off chance he is around the alps or one of the roads the teams&police are using. Its worth a try!
Did he have a fave spot he liked to go around Weaverville?
Really hoping you find him.
The helicopters ought to be alerted too, keeping an eye out for another face doesn’t take away from looking for Dan.
Maybe his family&your family could get some comfort talking to someone in the same position. His brother has been posting in comments.
I only suggest it as i know how it can be when no one around you can truly understand what your feeling nor would you want them to.
We’re thinking of you, please keep the community posted on how we can help look for him and help you. 💗

Eerily similar to when Stacy smart disappeared. Everyone was so focused on the missing woman in Redding Stacy was a one liner with little press coverage. And that has not worked out great for the smart family.

~thank God, thank Jesus, than Allah, thank Buddha, not everyone wants to “fit in the cube”.
A little lighthearted humor on this sad, but ever hopeful thread, is welcome.

Bill, phone home. Smoke signals, anything.

I hate to ask this but has anyone WALKED the dirt road where his vehicle was found? And even up in the woods adjacent to that road? If he wrote letters and told daughter to empty his bank account and researched how to make a noose sadly he probably walked up in the woods and hung himself. Keeping his wallet so when found he could be identified.

,
I intend to do just that on 8/23. I’m a former neighbor and friend of Bill’s who moved to the bay area about a month ago. Bill helped me pack and load my stuff into storage. He was physically strong and nimble with good stamina for his age. He told me about being in Viet Nam as a marine during the war and spending months on recon, eating what he found and caught, and surviving hand to hand combat. He was a survivor. Though it looks like a possible suicide, I’m not so sure. I was also quite disappointed when the sheriff told me they had no search dogs nor budget to look for him for more than a few hours. All this Patriot talk and we let a vet march off into the sunset alone to end it all? What happened to “no one gets left behind”?
Bill was a good man, I hope he still is. But this does not look good.

ok, now how did his daughter get ahold of his bank card in the first place.. His wallet is missing and Why would he ask them to take 500.00 from his bank account everyday.. Especially since he is having his car repaired. One would think he would need that money so he could pay the car repair bill. Something doesnt sound right to me.

My father sent his bank card to my sister in the mail. It had instructions for her to pull the money, because he wanted her to have it. It is a red flag for sure and the detective is watching his bank card very closely.
