Smoke from the Moose Fire is barely rising above the ridgetop this morning as seen from a Lake County Fire Camera atop Mt Konocti.

Although last night Cal Fire was officially reporting that the Moose Fire south of Ukiah and west of Hwy 101 was only 85 acres, scanner traffic indicated that the fire was much larger. Cal Fire’s official count this morning is 225 acres with 25% containment.

About 300 personnel, two helicopters, five air tankers and three dozers are working on the fire.

The fire yesterday broke out about 5:15 p.m. and spread through grass and oak woodland in the McNab Ranch area near the birthplace of the famous McNab breed of stock dogs.

Evacuations are still in effect for Valley View Drive and the Bus McGall and Moose Road areas near Hopland. The north end of Feliz Creek is under an Evacuation Warning. Multiple structures are threatened.

The temperature is expected to be in the high nineties today.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Update 9:20 a.m.: Photos by photographer Peter Armstrong tweeted by Cal Fire.

Update: 10:30 a.m.: Tweet from the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office states the following: “The Evacuation Orders for the Moose Fire in the Hopland area have been reduced to an Evacuation Warning. Moose Rd, Bus McGall Rd, Valley View Rd, Feliz Creek Drive, and the north end of Feliz Creek Rd are all still currently under an Evacuation Warning.”

UPDATE 6:20 p.m.: The Sheriff’s Office as lifted evacuations. They stated, “All Evacuation Warnings for the Moose Fire in the Hopland Area have been lifted. There are no longer any Evacuation Warnings or Orders.”

UPDATE 7:32 p.m.: Cal Fire reports that the fire remains at 225 acres and is 35% contained. They say there are 461 personnel working on the incident. One firefighter received a minor injury.

Sure hope they will snuff that fire out soon. The fires keep popping up like weeds. Be safe everyone fighting the fire.

If fire information is as important to you as it is for me, donate! $5 a month is within reach for most of us, doncha think? I rely on RHBB for up-to-date and specific information for fires in Mendo, Humboldt and Lake County at minimum; it’s worth every penny and I only wish it could be more. Please join me in making Kym smile and keeping the news coming!

At a dollar a comment, I should invest in duct tape for my eyes and fingers, so I dont see the ridiculous comments – and dont respond to them either…

But I appreciate the group coming together for Kym. I just participated in the donation challenge.

Kym, it’s quite shy of my comment count….but its something to you anyway. Thanks for your good works.

I offer a package deal; Kym should ban me, Central, Sid and Shak all as one big disturbance.

I’d be stoked! She’s too nice though!! Agggghh

(Sorry Kym, for all my comments, the disturbance I’ve caused, and all the time I take)
