Low-flying Helicopter in SoHum Concerns Residents

Low flying helicopter with LiDAR equipment

This photo of the helicopter was taken this morning in Piercy by resident and popular nature photographer, Talia Rose.

A low-flying helicopter in Southern Humboldt and northern Mendocino has concerned several residents. The tail number, N85PJ, matches that of one whose flight records seem to show that it is following PG&E lines and PG&E has said it will be working in the area.

In addition, the chopper has what appears to be LiDAR equipment attached to the front of it.

The chopper appeared in the Piercy area (northern Mendocino) a little after 10 a.m. According to FlightRadar, as of 1:30 p.m., it dipped below the radar in the Phillipsville area.

We’ve reached out to PG&E to confirm what we suspect—that this is a chopper doing line inspections for them and will update when we can.

Same chopper last Sunday in the Alderpoint and surrounding areas.
Isn’t law enforcement also using these choppers? They seem to fly some areas that don’t have PGE.

They came over the power lines s l o w then popped right over my house. Ever see a chopper go down??? I mean in real time. It is awful. When they lose the rear toter they spin. No control and try to use the main prop to f l o a t down. Most likely they hit a blade on something and look out. Pieces fly, rip, and the damn thing goes down sideways. Did I mention they shocked one of my very good friends, my mule. He is very leary of anything now and I for one am not happy. He is one of my family and on the mend. I must say it is a very good thing PGE jumped my gate many moons ago and snuck a smart meter on me when I was gone. I must say they lucky I was not home 1. for jumping my gate. I dont know what I would do after all that has happened to the rude asses if they still came to read my meter. PGE I must say, I am not at all happy with your practices and disrespect with us that live OUT where you disrespect personal property and so sad you cant learn to read for I am legally posted !!! And you had a key. No threats but you do need to learn some respect.

Thank you! It always strikes me that regardless of the hundreds of deaths in the past two years from wildfires; some people care more about their illegal pot grow then their own family or other people’s safety. It seems to be a “Pot over human life” mentality. Here’s a thought; maybe they should just get a J-O-B and pay taxes like the rest of us.

Many people have also commented that they don’t have power lines yet helicopters fly directly over their property.. even though neighbors are far away.
Also, I would think that if the community can ask the law enforcement to not fly this low to do their jobs, that PG&E should be able to accomplish their surveys flying a bit higher also.

I dont buy that it is pg&e my house is a quarter mile from any major power lines the helicopter hover directly over my yard for almost 30 seconds at around 150 feet up and then did circles over the neighborhood by chp bbn in redway for 15 minutes

Looks like the chopper that was dancing over the Eel River Valley Redwoods on Saturday. Looking – I assumed for hot spots.
It was damp and chilly and a number of heat sources (wood stoves, fireplaces) were going and the thing kept circling a few specific locations.
Brought back a few memories…
Most of them uncomfortable.
But the machine sounded more *friendly* than those CAMP choppers ever did. (I was convinced at the time they were using some sort of sonic intimidation because the CDF choppers never made my guts clench before I could identify them.)
Got some good looks at the LiDAR kit on the front of this one since the heat was on in the house here.
I’m glad they are out looking. Some of these small communities could go the way of Paradise and we don’t need that grief another time.

This same chopper flys around humboldt hill, I have video of them behind two baby bald eagles in a nest, very close. I told them what is happening multiple times. They still fly below 100ft! Pilot has amazing skills

that’s insane, I might be mistaken but anywhere with listed endangered birds or owls are suppose to be no fly areas. Might want to call The Redwood Sciences Bird Monitoring Lab a call, on HSU campus. You can probably get them protected.

Making it a no fly area? Chances are they would then miss power lines and/or transformers. We have one about 20 ft. from our house. Plenty of trees and undergrowth in the area. As far as I’m concerned, they can fly at 10 ft. if it will help. I don’t want to end up like Paradise.

I am curious why this chopper doesn’t have to operate at the legal altitude limits over populated places like Garberville and Redway?
It was definitely under 300′- 500′, maybe about 200′ or so over my place in GBV.
I do hope they got a good photo of the mess the PG&E pole in Garberville is, on Miller Street, if it’s PG&E and they truly are looking at transmission lines.
It’s covered in ivy and wisteria and completely encircled with brush on all sides.

~good info. link. Thank you.

Every year at this time The County’s Supes. are MIA for three Tuesdays (July 30th to August 23rd). It’s comparable to the last meeting of the year when people are off for the holidays, and the worst of the worst just breezes on by.

Hard to make public record, say, for low-flying intrusive, disturbing the peace hell-o-cops and jets, when there’s no public hearing for a month. With wireless meters forced on us, a record of filing bankruptcy in January, and admittance of guilt for Paradise Lost and the Sonoma County “Wildfires”, PG&E Inc. is not my choice to be “checking power lines”. With money being no object, scaring animals and the population of no concern, it seems the power lines could be checked more better on foot.

Of note: there seems to have been a “Special closed-session Meeting”, @ 11:00 am last ‘Wednesday,’ the 7th: Conference with Legal Counsel pursuant to Government Code section 54956.9, subd. (d)(1) regarding existing litigation; Williams v. County of Humboldt; Case No. 19-cv-01330-MMC.

Conference with Legal Counsel – Existing Litigation pursuant to Government Code section 54956.9, subd. (d)(1); Gail Bradley v. Humboldt County; Case No. DR180099.

T.H.E.Y. convene, collude and confer on “Legal” matters…in closed session. Aiding and abetting, much?

Looks like some people didn’t completely read the link that Kym provided, in order to collect proper data, the helicopter needs to fly no higher than 300 feet and no faster than 40 knots.

My concern is that someone may end up taking pot shots at them, pun not intended.

PJ Helicopters out of Red Bluff. They’re doing PGE work now but they definitely contract law enforcement surveillance work. A week before Operation Clean Sweep they were flying the hell out of the Island Mountain area picking targets. They’re on the web.

It was 100 feet above Melody TP in Redway 3 times today. Very low. We have two 100 ft tall dead rotting doug fir stumps in the park and they were at that level. Circled the Brass Rail and somewhere behind the lumberyard all three times. If it’s someone renting a PGE helicopter, IDK, do they want to confiscate a trailer?

Last time this happened, years ago, some innovative people were growing pot on the roof of the Brass Rail. I kinda doubt it’s a repeat though.

PGE. Relax. They have been flying every Sunday near and around my licensed grow for the last month. I like to see the choppers these days. I am out to make a living not a greedy killing. Being licensed and only 80 outdoor plants I can still make a decent living.

Apparently the people on here out of the loop are not PG&E customers and also do not pay attention to other local news. These choppers have been over my home over the summer on two particular weekends. I wasn’t worried. I don’t grow pot. I was grateful that they are taking proactive safety measures to protect life and property. I was also well aware in advance because they sent me letters in the mail telling me what they were doing. On top of that I read several articles telling me they would be in my area inspecting lines and power poles. Oh, by the way, there’s not a power pole or line that crosses over my property but yes, I do have electricity and it gets here over other people property or public lands. There’s no conspiracy to get your pot. This is a corporation finally doing its long overdue, “Due Diligence”.

Flights are likely due to revision to California general ordinance 95.

Used to be minimum 18 inches required around electrical lines. New fire safety regulations require a minimum clearance of four feet year-round.

https://www.pge.com/en_US/safety/yard-safety/powerlines-and-trees/laws-and-regulations.page

Trees are dying.

https://www.readyforwildfire.org/wp-content/uploads/HighHazardZones_Tier1_Tier2_8x11.pdf

Due to climate change? Yes. I think so.

Besides. Any large grows can be identified by existing satellite images.

What PGE is doing is using flir to look for hot spots in the power lines as well as above average temperature transformers above ground on the poles and below ground, they can also see the hot wires in your house and on your land using the flir radar. If you have lots of power running through your house they will see the hotter than normal wires.

The illegal pot growers should be the only ones that is concerned as they are breaking the law and I could care less if a chopper landing on their property and a squad of US Marines bailed out and took them all in to the Humboldt Hilton. I live right next door to the Rohnerville Airport and these choppers, borate bombers, US Coast Guard Choppers and lots of private planes are going over my house at all times of the day (except at night) and they don’t faze me one iota. When I lived in the Sutter County area (near Sacramento), we had B52 bombers going over us all of the time and the ground shakes when they go over due to the power they generate. So get over it or move to another part of the Universe.

Odd, new news;

This Hell-icopter obviously is the latest in secret Government Agenda 21 version 3 nefarious weather/mind warfare.

Many a youtubers agree.

It has a laser-orb-blaster-beam right in the front!

Normally, to conduct these super duper secret black-ops, they invoke the aircraft cloaking capability, or ACC. (And drive at night, when peasants sleep)

Theres a rude YouTube dude who tells the truth all day about it. 5 episodes a day. Only 3 hours long, each.

The people are waking up. The spoof will soon be revealed
