To crash between Murray road and or school and airport road which is all a straight shot says a lot.

.Either wreckless driving
.Unfamiliar driver merging and or drivers not allowing others to enter the road way
. There should be no reason for this kind of accident to happen unles there was something happening inside a car or cars either.
Could have been road rage.

Too much too speculate but the answers and evidence will be clear.

You said something that really irks me every time that I hear it. The driver entering the highway has the responsibility of safely merging into the flow of traffic. That may mean that the merger may need to speed up or slow down but you are not entitled to just be let in. That said, I move over as a courtesy (and for my own safety) if it is clear to do so…and often there are already vehicles in the fast lane.

So, the next time that you are Jammin on to the highway remember that I am under no obligation to change my lane or speed so that you can merge.

🕯🌳It’s in the California Driver’s manual that you must move over or slow down for on coming traffic onto the freeway. It’s in the hand book.

Willie,
While I respect your opinion, a quick Google search gave me this.

California Driver Handbook – Vehicle Positioning
Space to Merge
Enter the freeway at or near the speed of traffic. Do not stop before merging into freeway traffic, unless it is absolutely necessary. Freeway traffic has the right-of-way. When it is safe, follow the “3-second rule” (refer to the “Do not be a tailgater!” section).

Do not try to merge into a gap that is too small.
Watch for vehicles around you. Use your mirrors and turn signals. Turn your head to look quickly over your shoulder before changing lanes or merging in traffic. Leave 3 seconds of space between you and the vehicle ahead of you. Make sure you can stop safely, if necessary.
If you need to cross several freeway lanes, cross them one at a time. If you wait until all of the lanes are clear, you may cause traffic delays or a collision.

🕯🌳I didn’t say stop it says you must move over safely to let merging on. Because you must be coming up to freeway speed by the time you enter the freeway.

I absolutely agree that common courtesy and safety dictate that one should allow merging drivers space to enter the highway. What I don’t like is merging drivers who think that I am the problem if I am already in the space that they want to merge in to.

It’s a small line but the driver handbook citation above states ” Freeway traffic has the right-of-way”.

Willie’s brand of courtesy unfortunately causes ‘Second Guessing’ and most stoplight collisions. If everyone KNEW the rules, there would be far less.

And BTW, one sunny afternoon on a straight-of-way, a LARGE spindly/spiny looking black and yellow striped garden spider descended from the sun visor and my car did everything a normal car could never do.

🕯🌳I will agree with that. I will safely try to pull over if I see a vehicle coming on,but if they are being rude about it, well they can kiss my 🐖

The person on the freeway has the right of way. The person merging is responsible to either speed up or fall back

Please read the law ..the merging party does not have the right of way

Wrong, absolutly wrong. Those coming on to the freeway are those that have to adjust to current traffic conditions.

Merging traffic must yield to those already on the highway. Common sense.

If it’s so damned common, why do I find so many idiots attempting to merge into my lane? It is particularly discouraging when I cannot move to the left because of a passing car. And they seldom seem to hear my cussing and my gestures, I often just get a wave.

Check with the DMV hand book. The law requires merging traffic to speen up or slow down to merge, not the otherway around. Buster, you are the kind of driver I like.

In California it is the reverse. The passing lane is the slow lane and the right lane is the fast lane. If you are in the passing lane, you are under no obligation to let anyone pass.

Thank you for making it abundantly clear why driving in Calfirnia is so horrific. You’re kidding, right? The right lane is the slow lane. This allows people to pass you on your left side in the fast lane. Why? It is safer because the slower driver is most likely to see you in the rear-view, side mirror if you pass on the left.

Consider a drivers’ ed. class. Soon.

Maybe the cassette was jammed, a meteor hit the right front control arm, or maybe the driver had a seizure or just popped a beer. Perhaps they drove into a tesseract and out the other side but at right angles to their trajectory 12 years later… Was it a late model sedan?

Just yesterday, I had to take evasive action on a Eureka street, when an oncoming SUV drifted into my lane, then they course corrected a few seconds later, and with my eyes firmly focused on the driver as they passed by me, their eyes were looking down at something inside their vehicle.

Driving in Eureka gets worse every day. It’s a real gauntlet to run evading suicidal drivers. Just nuts.

vehicles merging with the main highway via on-ramps DO NOT have the right-of-way. They must merge safely and slow down for safety if need be. Drivers on the main highway should slow down or move over out of courtesy and safety when possible, but there is NO obligation to do so. Crashes on a straight-away in good weather tend to be the result of distracted or incompetent driving.

We just drove past this in tears. Seemed like they were trying to still get someone out. Glad to hear ambulance was cancelled which means everyone is ok- car looked like injuries would be imminent. there was still an ambulance on scene and a ton of responders.

Thanks Kym,

I’m far from being a macho dude but sometimes I feel uncomfortable if I tear up while watching a movie. I will now try to think of it as an emotional massage and just relax. 🙂

I figure that is definitely worth 3 dimes in the jar…maybe 5.

Merging didn’t seem was a problem, as the car was not looking as if it was merging on or off the onramp. The pic I took didn’t look like it was close to the ramps. Glad the woman, man and child I saw were out of the vehicle ok.

Oh I can drive, but that’s irrelevant to this post so here’s the best post on the topic .

TRAFFIC LESSON FOR TODAY

What do I do when encountering an onramp on the freeway?

We get traffic complaints from people saying drivers on the freeway don’t yield to them when they are entering from an onramp and we frequently have to correct this misunderstanding of the law. So how does this work?

The RED car is entering a freeway from a side street. If you are driving that RED car, you have the following responsibilities;

1. Use the long onramp and acceleration lane to ACCELERATE to freeway speeds. If you try to enter the freeway at much slower speeds, you will do nothing but cause a problem.
2. USE your left turn signal. Remember, a signal doesn’t automatically give you the right to change lanes. You have to do so safely. DO NOT cut across all lanes to the left lane.
3. You do NOT have the right of way. Plan accordingly and begin making your plan as you start onto the ramp, not when you reach the end.
4. If you still run out of space and haven’t merged, pull over to the shoulder and wait for traffic to clear, then speed up on the shoulder and merge. DO NOT try to force your way on the freeway. (if you follow #3 and plan ahead, this won’t happen)

The GREEN car is already on the freeway, driving in the #2 lane. If you are driving the GREEN car, you have the following responsibilities;

1. MAINTAIN your speed so the red car can plan for you.
2. You may change lanes to the #1 lane if safe to avoid the situation or you may slow down to allow the red car to merge in front of you.

If you are in the #1 lane, DO NOT change lanes into the #2 while vehicles are merging. Wait until they have merged, then you may change lanes for a future exit.

Courtesy is underrated and infrequent. We could use a bit more of it out there.

Drive to arrive!

Thanks for posting the good, easy to understand info. I particularly like rule #1 for the green car.

“1. MAINTAIN your speed so the red car can plan for you.”
This drives me crazy because I am a good judge of speed and space but only if the speed of what I am judging (the green car) is constant. My style of driving is to typically drop in behind (the green car) but sometimes the other driver slows (perhaps to be nice) but it ends up in a cluster.

My son was the First responder on scene and called 9-1-1 for help along with using his fire extinguisher because the car was smoking. He said several people told him he needed to leave the scene because to many people were all around. Let me Say that it is a 1st Responders duty to stay on Scene till Help Arrives and due everything they can in situations like this. So the next time you see a 1st Responder on Scene do not make him or her feel bad by telling them they do not Belong there to Help. The next Life they try to Save may be your own. So Please have Curiosity for our 1st Responder, Police, Paramedics Etc. I am Proud of my son for stopping and helping Out, So Don’t make him feel bad for doing his job people.

Did your son happen to say anything about the second car involved in the collision? Did it pull over to help? Was it a hit and run situation? I am just curious.
