Press release from PG&E:

PG&E will continue to fly along distribution lines in high fire-threat areas of Humboldt County through August 18th.  We will be flying 2 helicopters, both Bell 206 LongRangers, from 9am through 5pm Monday through Sunday.  We’re trying to utilize the daylight hours as much as possible to get this important safety work done and minimize impact to communities.

Our operational altitude is 300 feet above the ground and won’t go lower.   We understand a lot of people aren’t used to seeing us fly that low but we appreciate your cooperation and patience as this is all part of PG&E’s wildfire safety efforts.  We are finished flying in Lake and Mendocino Counties.

PG&E to Conduct Power Line Inspections by Helicopter in Humboldt County

EUREKA, Calif. — Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) will continue to inspect power lines in Humboldt County for the next couple of weeks, using helicopters equipped with Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) technology. The inspections are part of PG&E’s expanded and enhanced vegetation management work, implemented following the 2017 and 2018 wildfires as one of many additional precautionary measures intended to further reduce wildfire risk.

In addition to ground inspections, the LiDAR helicopter inspections will help gather data to allow PG&E to identify hazardous trees that have the potential to fall into the lines. These inspections will take place across the approximately 25,200 miles of distribution lines in locations that have been designated as at elevated or extreme risk of wildfire based on the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) High Fire-Threat District Map. The data gathered will supplement PG&E’s ground inspections by capturing imagery that can be analyzed to take measurements, reveal patterns and identify any potential risks.

Helicopters will be flying along the power lines at an altitude of about 300 to 500 feet. PG&E will be making automated phone calls to notify residents ahead of the scheduled helicopter flight in their community. Flights will continue through mid-August.

For more information on the helicopter inspections, residents can visit pge.com/enhancedveg or email PG&E at [email protected] with questions about this work.

They were just all over east of Willow Creek. They were flying so low. It’s very unnerving. Same helicopter as in the picture. Do they share info with camp and the hcso? I received NO automated call and pge has my number in their system bc I receive service alerts.

Fuck PJ helicopters from Red Bluff. They fly for HCSO and MCSO. They have 20 choppers in their livery and surveillance is their bread and butter. All their tail numbers end in PJ

Definitely flew lower than 300 ft. in the Salyer/Willow Creek area. Their maneuvering between fir trees was so tight i was ready to bolt. And those trees are not 300 ft. tall. They followed the lines, but also circled and circled over and over again. And no, we weren’t notified by automated phone call. I was wondering what the heck. Thank you Kym for publishing this notification.

This won’t be popular, but,… just who are you that you should be notified that pge is checking their lines via helicopter. The article pretty much says they are checking the lines. Get over your own self importance and what they might see.

Carry on.

Has anyone received telephone notice of a planned shut-off?

~the four days the power was off here, three notifications came by mail, three days prior. The fourth one – nada. When i asked at the PG&E office in Fortuna that day, i was told it was an emergency. BTW, the power was cut early morning like the other three. When will it be back on? i asked. 6:00 was the reply. At Exactly 6:00 p.m. power was restored. Funny how an “emergency” can be timed like that.

a neighbor,

The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light. They lived in a land of shadows, and now the light is shining on them. Isaiah 9:2. –Basic Instructions Before Leaving Earth (BIBLE).

~it would also be honorable (employees to employers. Public Servants to Public), to get a heads-up when those Fighter jets are going to be overhead –and, why?

Maybe even anything.
