[UPDATE 1:16 a.m.: Over 280 as of 1:15 a.m.] Over 180 Lightning Strikes in Emerald Triangle Today, Says National Weather Service

lightning animation

Lightning animation from NOAA.

Have you seen the lightning?

We’ve had rain in some areas but there is still a possibility of fire breaking out as a result of lightning strikes.

The National Weather Service tweeted at 10:41 p.m., “We estimate over 180 lightning strikes across Trinity, Humboldt, and Mendocino counties so far today. Storms have produced rain, but fires are still possible. If you happen to see a fire, help out the firefighters and report it.”

UPDATE 1:16 a.m.: According to another tweet from the National Weather Service in Eureka a minute ago, “The cloud to ground lightning strike count in Mendocino, Del Norte, Humboldt, & Trinity counties is now over 280. This count does not include cloud to cloud lightning. Storms have temporarily weakened, but isolated storms are still possible overnight into Saturday.”

Hahaha, waaaay more than 180. It’s been going almost non stop since 4:00 pm, it’s almost midnight now and i can still hear thunder, we did get about 3/8″ of an inch of rain, and now the rain is picking back up again thankfully. I would say a couple hundred strikes at least between Hayfork summit, Oregon mountain and the Weaver basin so far. Way more in the alps, and a good bit east of us as well, which is where I’m hearing the thunder now. USFS and CalFire are staffed up and in lightning plan. The next few days are going to be interesting. You can zoom in to our area and increase the time frame to 12 hours to get a sense of the scope of this storm here:

There has been lightning from mendicino all the way into central oregon.

It was nice to see jet exhaust cover the skies for the last two days leading up to the rain. I wonder if anyone is going to test that rain water for chemicals?

There are 93000 daily flights around the world. That’s a lot of jet engine exhaust if you think about it. No need to peddle any conspiracy theories

what you are likely seeing is mostly water vapor and diesel (kerosene) exhaust. Poo water should be saved for ground pumping. At 30,000 ft. the air is cold and exhaust gases condense quickly. A week or so ago was warm enough aloft one didn’t see much vapor trail from the usual jet traffic, but with a weather pattern change, maybe the air way up high was cold again. There are many flights each day that follow the Pacific Coast of North America. Sometimes the air aloft is traveling en-mass from West to East, maybe at 80 or 100 MPH at 30,000 ft.. If it’s cold, each passing plane, timed to travel a few minutes apart, will each lay down a vape trail, that from the ground, end up looking like a bunch of parallell lines running North South.
There are some cloud seeding experiments, though mostly out in Nevada. Until recent times, most commercial cloud seeding operations throughout history, have been pretty bogus; like, get-out-in front-of-likely-rain-for-better-success type stuff.

They don’t count cloud to cloud lightning. Only downstrikes, which are typically less common.

Holy shit that was insane….. went to Lake Siskiyou last night to see the grand kids. Weather reports here were still vague about the lightning. Everytime they report lightning here in Siskiyou it actually occurs about 10% of the time…. last night made up for the other 90%.
Oh and being in a tent might not have been the best idea but running around to attempt to get in toca vehiclebwould have been shear suicide…. the cloud to cloud and ground strike count doesnt cover any portion if an hour last night. That storm was off the charts .

So my husband and I live in Fortuna and took a last minute camping trip to Lake Siskiyou yesterday for the weekend. Let’s just say I’ve never experienced a storm like that from inside a tent before. Thunder, lightning, downpours – the whole shebang. Not the Emerald Triangle but the same storm system. Terrifying and amazingly wonderful all at the same time. Who needs sleep anyway, right?

That was a good storm. Nothing too bad.

Good amount of moisture, nice hail and lightning….

NOAA had a warning up for 4 days prior, so I was well prepared.

CentralCo has already blamed the storm on the Government weather illuminatos….oi vey

when the wind changes directions the climate changes. no one can deny climate change the smart ones will ponder just how much humans are to blame however.
just the thought that humans can control a planet or the climate is pure crap.

The idea that we can put pump billions of tons of heat trapping gasses into the atmosphere and not cause a temperature rise is the real “pure crap”.

“On August 16, 1972, approximately 69 small boats operating off the coast of northern California and southern Oregon suddenly encountered high winds and rough seas. Although the U.S. Coast Guard, assisted by numerous private vessels, conducted extensive rescue operations, 13 persons are missing or dead.”

Did anyone notice the f16 fighter jets doing loops around Mendocino a few hours before the rain? Also people reported them in Alderpoint and around Humboldt! Not saying anything, but don’t really ever see them playing around here. Any info on that Kym?

Freaky storm! Those poor firefighters probably didn’t get a wink of sleep all night long, anticipating the pager going off.

On the other side of the coin, how fun was that for all the Dean Koontz ‘Lightening’ fans?
Outta this world.

Several downstrikes in the Iron Peak area last night…fire crew dispatched to a tree on fire.

I got 0.30″ of rain this storm…just what we need to promote more Yellow Star Thistle & Tar Weed growth…the Yellow Star keeps coming back up no matter how many times I whack them…
