[UPDATE 6:28 p.m.] Traffic on Southbound 101 Coming Into Eureka Almost at Standstill

traffic jam

Traffic flowing from Arcata into Eureka via the safety Corridor is backed up all the way to Mid-City Motor World and moving at a snail’s pace. This has been the case at least since 5:30 p.m., according to our reporter who is inching through traffic.

At this point, we don’t know why the traffic is backing up.

Please avoid the area if at all possible.

Please remember that information gathered from initial reports is subject to revision as more facts become available.

UPDATE 6:18 p.m.: At this point we believe that there are three vehicles involved in a traffic collision. We believe a small silver car driven by a young woman was stopped in traffic, when she was rear-ended by a man driving a small car and then she hit a large construction type truck.

But again this information is just from the first reports.

UPDATE 6:28 p.m.: Photo from the scene. (note: the description of what occurred has been updated to reflect interviews with the drivers of the vehicles.)

I agree! North Ca needs a border wall from So CA! Or just give So Ca back to Mexico! From right south of Santa Rosa!

Plenty of stupid drivers anywhere. Not that anyone knows the circumstances here yet, though that does not stop the commentary of course lol.

There was one car still on the bridge, all others were on the side of the road after the bridge. Should have had car towed off bridge to help ease the traffic. Took 20 minutes to get from mid city to Jacobs Ave

Hint to CalTrans… slow the speed limit to 40 about 500 yards north from the bridge.

I keep thinking they should make speed limits 10 miles slower that way people will actually do 50 instead of 60

Good idea, but very few go 50, I doubt if they’ll go 40,it’sa traffic disaster!! right along with Eureka.

Traffic was backed up North bound from the last light in Eureka all the way through the Eureka slough bridge at around 3:00. what was the cause of that backup, it was all the way to Sizzler.

Drivers need to pay more attention, and deduce the traffic conditions in front of them. As soon as I saw a row of brake lights in front of me in the distance, I started quickly light tapping my brake pedal to get the attention of the drivers behind me, then turning on the hazards when I had to continually use the brakes.

That is all good, except it is hard to get the ‘attention’ of the driver behind you when they are too busy texting or playing a mindless game on their phone to even be aware they are piloting a couple thousand pounds of metal.

I see the problem, the cop was going the wrong way and hit the maroon car.

Why is there a rush hour now?

Because everyone that works in Arcata can’t afford to live there.

There’s a roadway called 580 in the Bay Area between Livermore and Tracy that’s 5~6 lanes both sides each. It’s a creeping (stop~15 mph), SOILD all the way across (good luck changing lanes), ‘Car Conveyor’ from as early as 4:am in the mornings and as late as 9~10:pm in the evenings. And, that’s if there’s no wrecks.

Is there that much oil still in the ground ???

These hour long closing are unnecessary. Briefly close down moving traffic bring on emergency vehicles via the next off ramp along with tow trucks move vehicles that are undrivable from the freeway.Vehicles that are drivable have the owners move them off the freeway immediately. Have the EMS care for the injured . Get them off the freeway first.Clear the freeway of debris get the traffic moving it’s pretty simple. Shouldn’t take longer than a half an hour.everyone has a video camera strap for their head lately anyway if you need to do an investigation do it later

You folks are sure negative. You should live in AZ where it’s been105 – 110 degrees during rush hour and you don’t have or can’t afford A/C! At least you have a nicer view and it’s cooler!
