Sheriff’s Office Says Claims of Trip Wire Near Treesit Unfounded; Rainbow Ridge Protesters Say One Treesitter Arrested

On Tuesday, a letter writer protesting logging by the Humboldt Redwood Company in the Rainbow Ridge area alleged that their security company, LEAR, had “set up trip wires connected to 12 gauge shot guns around a tree occupied by a tree sitter so that supplies can not be brought to the forest defender” known as Rook.

The Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office says that their investigation indicates this isn’t true. Samantha Karges, spokesperson for them, told us, “Our Special Services Lieutenant went out and made contact with Rook [Tuesday] and investigated the claims of some sort of trip wire near the tree. Those claims were unfounded. The Lieutenant was able to confirm Rook’s wellbeing and that there were no life-threatening hazards or traps set up in the area.”

An Instagram account, Blockade.babes, noted six days ago that Rook, who began her treesit in early June, had been resupplied by representatives of HRC following emails “demanding humane treatment.”

Today in the #treetop, Rook finally received more water and a #companyculture #snackbundle from #HumboldtRedwoodCompany. This follows another #phonezap and emails demanding humane treatment directly to #soupedup security guard ceo Paul Truitt and individuals in HRC management. The message appears to have finally made it through the #denseunderbrush of #companybureaucracy. After the second #treesit was established by Pasqual a couple miles away in another threatened grove, Truitt cruelly decided to punish Rook by cutting off the meager flow of supplies he had been allowing since the last wave of #publicpressure ended the prior period of deprivation. Pasqual reports the guards are intensifying their perimeter around his tree sit to prevent supporters from resupplying him. More to come on his situation. #protectwhatyoulove #savethemattolesancientforest #oldgrowth #roomwithaview #outdoorliving #naturallystrong #naturallybeautiful #naturallydurable #earthfirst! #extinctionrebellion #forestdefenseisclimatedefense #humboldtredwood @getredwood #getredwood #allweatherwood #redwoodgate #redwooddeck #mendocinoredwoodcompany #sansomepartners #foreststewardshipcouncil @fsc_us @fsc_international @zowines

And blockade.babes stated that another treesitter, Pasqual, was taken into custody Wednesday.

Today, #treesitter Pasqual was arrested after seeking relief from the wet weather on Rainbow Ridge. This daring #forestdefender was chased and then jumped on by a security guard after tumbling down a steep slope with his hiking backpack on. During his two week stay on a #woodenplank in the #treetop he located another #sonomatreevoles nest in a small cave at the top of the tree. The fresh needles indicate the best is actively being maintained. Heavy fog moved in to the area a few days ago, causing the canopy to rain down moisture collected in the #bristley needles of the Douglas fir. This is part of the importance of the #ridgetop #groves, collecting moisture from clouds even in the dry months of summer. #savethemattolesancientforest #climatecrisis #defendtheearth #earthfirst! #extinctionrebellion #humboldtredwoodcompany #getredwood #diyideas #treehouse #canopydweller #fsc #forestsarecarbon #piscesfoundation #sansomepartners @getredwood @fsc_us

Big fucking surprise there. Of course they weren’t using spring guns. The fact that they ever decided to try convincing people of this made me utterly lose any belief that they might have an actual cause or that any of their claims about what they’re protesting might be accurate. If you have to resort to utterly blatant falsehoods to try to sway people to your side, you’re either entirely in the wrong or trying for the GOP nomination. Or both.

How could a person assume that the letter writer (David Grant) is/was indeed part of the tree defender group? Do you know David Grant? Do you know if David Grant is part of the group?
How can you assume the letter was sanctioned by the tree defender group? Often these groups have a democratic process before decisions are made as to whether or not to write a letter to the editor. Maybe David Grant has some beef with the group, maybe David Grant is getting paid by HRC. There could be a malicious attempt to sabotage any credibility the tree-sitters and blockaders may have. It would be easy to convince people like you who appear to be on the fence regarding the legitimacy of their argument/fight. This is a tactic often used – let’s discredit the protestors, to make them look like liars and bad people.

Proof of a logging company faking letters purporting to be from anti-logging activists with the intent of discrediting the activists, with no refutation by the activists or any other obvious sign of fakery.

Everybody lied about Judi Bari. Including Judi Bari. The FBI was just inept, and ideologically charged. But so were Bari et.al. I believe Bari was bombed by her ex husband Mike Sweeny. Now this charge has been put out there before in print, in the Anderson Valley Advertiser, and he has had ample time to sue for defamation or slander.
There is circumstantial evidence he was an FBI informant in college, up until, and perhaps after he was in a relationship with Bari. Would that interfere with a proper bombing investigation? he studied HVAC tech, and would have been technically capable of constucting the bomb, Bari and Sweeny where living together, next to and opposed to the Ukiah airport, when it was fire bombed. And together at the time of a similar attempt at the Cloverdale mill Would an ex wife with knowledge of one’s criminal complicity be a target? 90 % of all violence against women are by their former partner, but does that fit the narrative of a Rebel Commander? Does it fit the FBI’s narrative of a domestic terrorist?
The bombing being a domestic violence case works against the rebel narrative promoted by Judi Bari herself, and of course really whipped into a high pitch frenzy, and large payout by Darryl Cherney.
As a kid we actually drove by the bombing scene in Oakland at Park and MacArther about 20 minutes after it happened I’ve been interested ever since.

Well I was heartily involved in the controversy surrounding one large harvest plan. It was on BLM land -public land- back in 1990. Big protest at BLM in Arcata w/ Earth Firsters beating drums on one side and Eel River Sawmill workers yelling on the other. I did not fit on either side so me and my buddy walked into the office to talk to the guy who actually put together the harvest plan. Earth Firsters said it was ALL old growth. Eel River protesters and BLM guy said NO old growth- all second growth. We went out to the harvest sites and checked them out. Guess what? Nobody had done that! Everybody was talking and yelling but they were all lying because….they hadn’t actually seen the place! There WAS some significant old growth. Not all old growth and some units even had zero old growth…It was remnant old growth left behind during the first passing over- either too steep or difficult at that time or an inholder property owner didn’t sign off. So…just saying. Maybe you don’t know for sure either what’s going on up there. Go up there with open eyes and then you will know more than almost everybody.

Lying is a typical extremist tactic, and it’s been used across all political persuasions. Currently the extreme left are the most outrageous abusers of the truth, cynically trying to paint anyone who disagrees with them as racists, homophobes, blah, blah, blah. At this point the litany is almost a joke.

It used to be that the extreme environmentalists had some integrity, even if you didn’t agree with their tactics. But those days are long gone.

When your cause is more important to you than the truth, you might want to rethink your priorities…

I tend to agree with you about extreme environmentalists in the past having integrity. I met the Earth First people that were involved in the efforts several years ago and their hearts were pure; they were doing what they thought was right, and they were dedicated. The tree falling on one of them was a real wake up call though. This fellow Pasqual, leaving his tree because the fog was dripping on him? Not very dedicated, or prepared for that matter. Just seeking fame, as what’s her name (Julia?) did years ago.

Trump didn’t disagree with anyone in a respectfull rational way. he distorted what Omar said, then said something racist!
Omar said the US is too beholden to the Isreali State. I’m Jewish, and I agree. What she said is not anti semetic. The Isreali State is not the Jewish people any more than Donald tRump represents Americans. What she said was not “vicious” at all. especially relative to what the crowd started chanting after tRump grossly mischaracterized what she said. the tRump administration, and Netanyahu’s administration are the only ones in the world who think moving the American embassy to Jerusalem is a good idea. EVERYONE else can see it is akin to throwing a match into a powder keg. Thats what Netanyahu wants. Trump is his fool.
Trump claiming people who disagree with HIM are “un American” is a classic sign of authoritarianism. Plain as day. Why didn’t anyone tell him to go back where he came from when he complained non-stop about America during the lead up to the 2016 election?

There was a point in time when I would look at Forrest defenders and have respect and reverence for what they do. Now, it seems to me that the blatant lies and stretched truths have driven and are continuously driving more and more people away from their cause.

I don’t understand how someone can sit in a tree for two weeks and still keep a roof over their head(keep a household). If they are on the public dole they need to be cut off and pay back what they have received. ~i agree, except for the word “industrial” – that word gives me the fan todds.
Industrial Disease
Indusrtial Military Complex – you can see where i’m going with this.

One year i counted the overuse of the word “industrial” in local articles. Emerald Magazine won – 18 times in one article!

Hemp is the miracle plant of our time, breathing in 4x the carbon dioxide (CO2) of trees during it’s quick 12-14 week growing cycle. Trees take 20 years to mature vs 4 months for {Industrial} Hemp! Our forests are being cut down 3x faster than they can grow! One acre of hemp produces as much cellulose fiber pulp as 4.1 acres of trees!!! (Dewey & Merrill. Bulletin #404. U.S. Dept. of Age. 1916)

Just to clear some of the controversy up. The forest on Rainbow Ridge is a product of the encroachment of firs and other softwood trees on oak forest, which has been happening for the last few hundred years or longer. That being said, the trees on Rainbow Ridge are only about 180 years old at the most. That forest also hasn’t been logged before, it is an unentered forest. Very few to none of those trees would meet old growth standards, but it is one of the last unentered fir forests that we have. As such, due to growing and other conditions, some of those trees are very large. Therein lies the conundrum. If I owned HRC I wouldn’t log that forest and would conserve it, especially since they have a lot of other land that they can log instead. It isn’t my company or my land though so they can do what they want.

Wrong Captain Obvious. It HAS been logged before. There is NO controversy. Further, it is not on Rainbow Ridge. By your protesters own admission, it is on Long Ridge. Thus the name of the area Long Ridge Cable. It IS an entered forest.

I thought fir encroachment was a bad thing in general; taking over oak lands that feed wildlife etc. So why not sell it as a fir thinning job? I know that the state is giving grants for small landowners to do that work on their ranches.
I think these things divide us as a community too much. Come up with common sense solutions, and stop the clowning around (ie tree sits, chaining yourself to equipment) I respect the Simpsons and other elders of the community that are doing these things, they are good people. But let the timber companies make the timber that we all use, pressure them to do things as responsibly as possible, and spend your energy fighting things that matter more. Like electing a different president next year.

I’ve known her for a while, she’s in and out of Arcata and I know her from her eyes and from standing along side her at many different actions all over. She has already said that she is looking for a way to gain publicity and retire from her sit. She’s probably going to look for her own book deal and “retire” the same way Julia did.

Dave Grant is a resident sympathetic to the protesters but does not represent the protesters group. Protesters believe that motion detecting devices may have been set up near treesits by Lear Asset Management, and that some of these devices could be connected to what Lear guards were overheard referring to as “poppers”. Speculation as to what “poppers” are led Dave Grant to falsely believe that guns were attached, unfortunately resulting in an unwanted rumour story in his letter to the editor. Many letters are being written and protesters can’t control what everyone writes, but there is definitely outrage among local residents that greenwashed corporate industry is destroying formerly pristine and unlogged forest.
