36-Year-Old Man Killed After Being Run Over by Pickup and Trailer

CHP Fatality feature iconPress release from the California Highway Patrol:

On July 13, 2019, at approximately 0520 hours, a pedestrian (name withheld pending family notification) was laying within the westbound traffic lane of SR-162, just east of the Hidden Oaks Casino, for unknown reasons.  Stephen Britton was driving his 2002 Chevrolet, hauling a load of hay to Laytonville from Covelo.  As he approached the Hidden Oaks Casino, Stephen noticed something in the roadway and attempted to slow his vehicle, however, he was unable.  The Chevrolet, along with the trailer, rolled over the pedestrian laying in the roadway.
Stephen stopped at the casino parking lot and he and his passengers ran back to check on the pedestrian.  Unfortunately, the pedestrian suffered fatal injuries from the collision.  Alcohol intoxication may have played a part in the pedestrians actions.
The collision remains under investigation by the Garberville CHP Office.  chp tc pr

Drunk at the casino, then sleeping it off in the road. Not good. I had the same thing happen years ago coming out of the mill at Branscom with a load of chips, at night. Drunk sleeping in the road which, fortunately, I was able to miss him, went back to check on him. Woke him up and he wanted to fight. Should have left him where he was. Yea, I know I’m an ass, but sometimes I try to be. Hope the people with the hay are OK.
There wasn’t even a casino back in those days.

Who knows why the guy was in the road. Drunk, high on drugs, dead, etc. I am very sorry for the pickup driver and passengers that had to witness running over him. It is very likely an event that they will never forget

CHP should change the graphic they use for communicating these accidents. it’s got a tacky Mortal Kombat video game vibe to it.

That graphic is tasteless and sensationalist. I suggest not using it again.

Suicide or stupidity?

This is a huge public safety problem in our community. Many folks have no choice but to walk along narrow hwy 162 if they want to get to town or get home. We need advocates and policy makers to help get the (fully funded) CO-4 Highway 162 Corridor Multi-Use Path project completed as soon as possible. Folks deserve a safe route to town and a safe route home.

Was the person already dead? Just a thought because most people don’t take naps on a road.

Thank you Jbennett for your right on comments about pedestrian safety in Round Valley. I would like to say, there is a great deal more to this story, which will hopefully be clarified here in short order. In the meantime, please, everyone, show some respect and refrain from speculating and making uncalled-for comments about the victim being “drunk”, “stupid”, etc. These remarks are so out of line. The man who was struck had been previously injured. That’s all I will say. And now the family is in anguish, the whole community is hurting, and these comments are no help at all. Give it a rest, at least until you know the whole story. Please.
