It seemed to last for long time. My old chandeliers were swinging back and forth. Thank goodness I anchored down my t.v. Pretty sure that it would have toppled.

Surprised how hard it shook in Piercy….hardest one I’ve ever felt in my 67 years. Had to grab the tv to keep it from falling over…. time to secure it to the wall.

Maybe just as important there was a cluster of 5+’s and 4+’s on the ocean side of the Cascadia plates north of here about 8 hours before these quakes. Offshore Oregon.

map https://pnsn.org/earthquakes/recent
more info; http://ds.iris.edu/seismon/eventlist/index.phtml?region=N_Pacific&lon=-124.3&lat=40.28 Offshore Oregon.

The one here was actually 2 quakes almost at the same time, a 5.4 and then a 5.6 http://scedc.caltech.edu/recent/Maps/124-40.html I grabbed the dog and ran outside- thought it was going to get bigger. Felt like a 3.5+ in downtown Redway.

It felt like a two-part quake to me. I, too, wonder if there is a connection with the cluster of good size quakes off the Oregon coast.

Likely it is. If you follow the work of Mr. Goldfinger from Oregon State University geologists have been watching an unusual swath of activity on the Cascadian Subduction Zone called Slow Quakes lately. We do usually have them, but they are normally every 12-16 months apart. This time they stopped as usual, than restarted again. He said they haven’t seen them come this often yet. Just thought it interesting these clusters of quakes would show up now

After 30 years out here I’ve gotten so I notice the directional swaying. North-west – South-east, for this one. I felt two separate pushes when it started shaking. The first one was enough to think it was an earthquake – the second came through with a bit more energy and motivated me to get up to be where I could catch the computer if it toppled.
Didn’t. More a rolling that a jolt. Never even noticed the smaller one a half hour before.
Poured concrete floors. Might be cold in the winter, but they are incredibly stable compared to the pole structure we built in Briceland.
Interesting that USGS UPGRADED it. Not their usual process…

This one was mellow compared to what we experienced in the early nineties. In 24hrs we had a 6.5. 6.7, and 6.1. People lost theirs decks, outer buildings it was just crazy. We got a lot of national coverage……….

7.1 quake came a decade or two earlier… in the middle of the night. Very sharp shaker.
Toppled the overpass by College of Redwoods. Submerged a couple ‘clam’ islands in the south bay,
and pretty much ended the run of the King Salmon nuclear plant. (Fault ran right by/or under it.)

The last quake in that series was pretty nasty. The earth was ‘groaning’, horrible grinding noises,
the sky lit up with ‘earthquake lights’ flaring up like blue sheet lightning in time to the shaking.
Lots of ‘vertical’ stuff in that one, it lifted the electrical turbines off their footings in Scotia.

Richter 4… Ho hum.
Richter 5… Mild.
Richter 6… Hmmm… ok, that’s a quake.
Richter 7… WTF, get me the hell out of here.
Richter 8… I don’t want to experience that.

Over 300 houses were damaged in the 92 quakes from Petrolia to Rio dell…

I do remember the 92 quakes. Was living in a pole house in Briceland..
First one barely rattled anything – one item tossed from a kitchen shelf.
Second one CLEANED THE KITCHEN – tossed everything from the shelves. We spent the next two hours cleaning up dry pasta, cooking oil, vinegar, broken dishes… Fired up the generator to run the shopvac. Went to bed. barely got back to sleep when that last one hit.
THAT one cleared the bookshelves, toppled the brick and boards… Woke me up from a dream in which people where arriving to help, “Heard you had an earthquake…” and I corrected them, “No, we’re still having one!” And that woke me up.
What I noted was that each of those quakes shook in a different direction. I could tell by which shelves were cleared when it was over. East/West shakes don’t clear shelves that are oriented to the North/South axis. And vice versa.

I felt a good, sharp jerk and a quick roll here in Miranda area. Strong. Stacks of paperwork fell off the shelves.
As soon as it happened I estimated a 5.3 ‘if it was nearby’. Lived in CA all my life. Gotten pretty good at calling it. 😉

I’m in Willits, I felt it and so did my son, so I can’t say it’s due to me being overly sensitive to quakes. It felt very weird, not the usual obvious sensations you detect when a quake is nearby. It made me think it must have been a decent sized quake but farther away than normal. It did last for a bit, and that’s always a little more nerve wracking than the short, sharp, shock style quakes.

I’m glad no one was hurt.

We’re in Alderpoint. It hit with a big crashing sound as our two story house with an attic swayed. We were in the living room on the ground floor and felt one big jolt. However, nothing knocked over anywhere we can find, and we have books on shelves that fell during the bigger one in the 90’s. Interesting that the shock went south so strongly.

Outside of Rohnerville: Long slow roll. Kept waiting for a big jolt which never came.
Hanging pots and pans clanking. Kinda circular motion; which felt unusual.

No big whoop. I get nervous when there aren’t enough earthquakes. This was like getting a phone call from an old friend.

Felt it well in Fortuna in the lower level of a 2 story apartment complex. I felt a light movement under my chair a little earlier where I briefly thought was that a little earthquake? I realize now that it might have been the 3.3 about 1/2 hr. before the double ones hit. I kept watching a rather large antique mirror hanging from a longer chain swinging back and forth against the wall. Glad everyone is ok and that there was no serious damage.

Totally felt it in Mack. It rocked my house. Made all the wind chimes rattle. Lasted a good while too. I was sitting on the couch. It felt like a gyroscope under me. The USGS has an interactive map where you can report where/how you felt it and add it to their info: https://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/eventpage/nc73201181/dyfi/intensity

Outside Miranda, it knocked part of the woodpile over and got the hanging pans swinging & clanging (homestead seismograph). The only things that got knocked over inside were from the cat freaking out and tearing around… it took me a while to settle down myself, waiting for an aftershock (or, remembering ’92, the next big one!).

My tired old brain interpreted the initial sensations as our neighborhood’s marauding bear thumping the house on one side. lol. I have an excellent foundation on Elk Ridge bedrock and rarely feel the quakes but this one seemed to almost twist the building. Impressive.

Been studying earthquakes for years now w/online teacher Dutchsince; we have been expecting this quake/adjustment for a few weeks since the massive M8.1 in Peru. So CA has been experiencing what some locals are calling ‘swarmageddon’, 1,000 quakes in the Glen Avon area. Glad no injuries reported!

I was starting to get into fire emergency preparedness mode. Now I’m reminded to also prepare for the Big One. I got a to go bag packed last night, remembering that in the 1992 one the 7.1 was larger than the two previous 6’s. Those 3 were particularly frightening. But not nearly as bad as Loma Prieta. I went to Santa Cruz a few days after it hit and downtown looked like a war zone. A lot of buildings were brick, so they just collapsed. It was a 6.9.

I”m in Trinidad, about 25 miles north of Eureka – we never felt a thing and I ALWAYS feel even the slightest tremor. Lived my whole life here in Calif and am 64 y.o., was in the one in Southern Calif in 1971 that was 7.2 or so. I even feel quakes that are 2.0 but didn’t feel a thing here in Trinidad; in fact we usually don’t feel most of the earthquakes. I have no idea why.
