[UPDATE 5:14 p.m.] One Laytonville Man Dead, One Missing in Boating Accident

Press release from the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office:

Vincent Soto, 40 years of age

Vincent Soto, 40 years of age, missing after a boating accident.

On June 11, 2019 around 6:10 PM the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office was contacted about a deceased person found floating in the water at the south east end of Lake Mendocino. It was also reported that a boat, without any persons aboard was also located in the immediate area. The reporting party indicated he’d observed the boat unattended, with no one aboard, so he went to investigate and observed the body in the water.

Mendocino County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to the area and with the assistance of personnel from the Ukiah Valley Fire Authority, located and recovered the body of a deceased male adult approximately 50 yards away from the boat. Identification in the boat was used to identify the decedent as Carlos Soto, 62 years of age, out of Laytonville CA. The cause of death in this case has not been determined but there were no obvious signs of foul play being involved. An autopsy is scheduled for Thursday June 13, 2019.

During this investigation a second wallet with identification and cellular telephone were also located inside the boat. The wallet and phone belonged to Vincent Soto, a 40 year old adult male, also out of Laytonville CA. Deputies were able to contact family members of the decedent where they learned the decedent, Carlos Soto, and his son, Vincent Soto had gone fishing on Lake Mendocino and should still be together. Deputies also located the missing persons vehicle with a boat trailer at the North Boat Ramp of Lake Mendocino. With the the two men having planned a day out together on the lake, a missing persons investigation was initiation related to Vincent Soto. An initial search of the lake showed no signs of where Vincent might be.

Sheriff’s Deputies contacted the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue Team who initiated a search by boat and by ground using divers and a side scan sonar system used to search under water. Search Teams will also be searching the shoreline of the lake.

Vincent Soto (pictured below) is described as being 5’09” tall, weighing approximately 190 pounds, with “salt and pepper” colored hair that is cut short. He is clean shaven and when last contacted by relatives, around 1300 hours on June 12, was shirtless and thought to be wearing blue denim cargo type shorts and possibly red (low top) style tennis shoes, possibly made by Nike. Family members said he has three tattoos; “One Love” on his chest that is multicolored, an English Mastiff on his left shoulder and a Native American with feathers on his right shoulder.

Anyone with information related to this case is asked to contact the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Dispatch Center at 707-463-4086.

Deceased- Soto, Carlos- Native American adult male, 62 years of age, resident of Laytonville CA.
Missing-Soto, Vincent- Native American adult male, 40 years of age, resident of Laytonville CA.

UPDATE 5:14 p.m.: Press release from the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office

The Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office, Mendocino County Search and Rescue, personnel of the Army Corps of Engineers, family and friends of the missing person, and a helicopter were all deployed and utilized in search efforts this morning and afternoon in an attempt to locate missing person, Vincent Soto. The Helicopter and crew were attending a training for flight crews at the Ukiah airport and graciously diverted to assist in this search. These effort were not successful.

The search efforts will start again on the morning of June 13th. Anyone with information about this case is encouraged to contact the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Communications Center at 707-463-4086.

You actually could help it. Typing a comment is an act of will.
It was both unnecessary, and unkind.

Thank you, Doggo. I am consistently disappointed by “Willie Caso-Mayham”‘s irresponsible and poorly thought out comments.

Yeah, this isn’t Mt Everest, these two guys were out on a calm lake fishing, surmising an accident. I wonder if they had life vests on? But yeah Willie casio, save your fun stuff for idiots like Everest climbers, who know they could die up there, then stupidly try to climb it. Then some say they conquered it. How stupid. Conquering a mountain means taking a D 10 up there, and flattening it down. Climbers do not conquer, bulldozers do.

Willie- Nobody knows what happened except one man is dead and another missing. Tragedies are no place to get witty or cast doubts. Your comments are usually much nicer. Please leave the trolling to professionals like myself. I only wish comfort for this family in this most difficult time. Thanks again First Responders- may this man be found safe…

Thats probably because your not familiar with that lake being as dangerous as it is people have drowned there & their bodies have never been recovered. Although no one can ever say never I would never think my Cousin would harm his Dad the more likely scenario to me would be one drowned trying to save the other but I have tried not to think about the worst case scenario I am still praying Vince is alive all we can do is wait..

So sorry to read that sad news. A beautiful day fishing on the water turns tragic. I pray they will find Vincent Soto, hopefully alive along the bank some where. Condolences to their family and friends. Thank you to all the first responders.

idk where you think you have the right to say anything when you was not there he was one of my older brothers and its a very ugly way for any one to lose a life and we had to wait for 34 days until they were able to get him out the pain of seeing the boats come in and not have my brother is the worst feeling in the world i would never wish my worst enemy to have to go through that it is a pain that can not be put in words.

I do not understand why pictures of the Son…Vincent Soto are not being circulated…I do know that Family Members have posted one or more but none are available in Public Media which usually has picture(s) of Missing Person(s). Perhaps someone could Post Vincent’s picture?

I went to Rohnert park junior high with Vince and ran back into him when he opened the smoke shop out in the Russian river area..
this news is shocking to me and I do send my condolences to you and your family. He was a good guy, with a big heart always willing to help those who were homeless always giving them a couple of bucks or buying coffee for one or two on some cold mornings or nights.. he was a good kid as well, he hung with the in crowd but was silent and was always observant to his surroundings..
he was a good kid and grew into being a good man.. I was proud to call him a friend. It’s sad to hear he is gone..
I can’t believe it..

Willie Caos-Mayham, if you can’t say anything nice then Don’t Say Anything At All.. This is someones family and they do not need to hear Negative Comments when there grieving. I have been through this myself and it is Heartless Of Anyone to Make Rude Comments… Prayers to the family and friends and May the Son Be Found Safe and Well.

Willie This is my family your commenting your suspicions about & I would like to think that if you are from the area you should already know this but clearly you don’t get out much, that lake has a long reputation of people drowning some of them have never been found. I could not imagine my cousin Vince would ever harm his Father they loved each other very much & the unfortunate yet more likely scenario is one died attempting to save the other although we still don’t have any more information at this time I am holding onto the little gleem of hope I have left praying Vince is still alive & we find him the last thing people should be saying is something like you said..
