[UPDATE 8:08 p.m.: Eureka Ties Record for Hottest Day in June] Hot, Hot, Hot Today (Eureka Breaks Today’s Record)

Heat advisory graphic

[Graphic from the National Weather Service in Eureka]

Break out the lemonade. Check the freezer for popsicles. It is going to be a hot one.

According to the National Weather Service, “We’ve already broken our daily record high at Woodley Island in Eureka! It was only 69 degrees, set in 1936, and we’re up to 73 as of 9:30 AM. The monthly record high for June is 85; that should be safe, but upper 70s are likely before any sea breeze kicks in.”

Heat advisory graphic

Magenta=Excessive Heat warning. Orange=Heat Advisory. [Graphic from the National Weather Service in Eureka]

And temperatures across northwestern California are predicted to be high. Interior valleys are predicted to reach between 95 and 105. A heat advisory is in effect from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. across much of Humboldt, Del Norte, Mendocino and Trinity Counties.

According to the National Weather Service,

A Heat Advisory means that a period of hot temperatures is expected. The combination of hot temperatures and high humidity will combine to create a situation in which heat illnesses are possible. Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors. Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside. When possible, reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening. Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Wear light weight and loose fitting clothing when possible and drink plenty of water. To reduce risk during outdoor work the occupational safety and health administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air conditioned environments. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat stroke is an emergency – call 911.

UPDATE 1:40 p.m.: It’s getting hot out there…

UPDATE 2:40 p.m.
: The National Weather Service in Eureka is expanding the area of the heat advisory. They tweeted,

Due to the rarity and disproportional impacts of these high temperatures along the coast, we have opted to expand the Heat Advisory into coastal areas of Humboldt County and additional portions of Mendocino County. This includes many communities in the Humboldt Bay region.

Please remember to look before you lock. Check to be sure kids and pets are out of the vehicle. While normally people in coastal areas can leave pets in cars for short times, now is not the day to do that.

UPDATE 8:07 p.m.:  The National Weather Service in Eureka posted on Facebook,

All time record high temperature for the month of June tied today in Eureka California. According to our climate records that go back over 100 years, 85F degrees is the hottest day on record in Eureka for the month of June. The last time the mercury soared to 85F was June 17th in 1945. There was one previous day in June when the thermometer climbed to 85F; June 6th 1903. The warmest temperature ever recorded in Eureka is 87F degrees. The last time that occurred was September 2nd 2017. Other notable high temperatures along the coast today are: 84F at Jack McNamara Airport, 84F at Fort Bragg and 82F at Point Arena. Keep in mind that literally everywhere else in Eureka is hotter than Woodley island. It feels at least 90 in cutten right now at 11 am.

Its currently 84 at my mom’s Drs office, by Safeway in Eureka and I’ve seen 3 older, set in their ways, white people, spontaneously burst into flames
If this keeps up, Eureka , that last bastion of Reagan era Republicans will surely fall into the liberals hands in the coming election season…

****On the real tho folks.. IF ITS TOO HOT FOR YOU OR YOUR INFANT IN THE CAR/TRUCK…
ITS TOO HOT FOR YOUR DOG!..
PERIOD!****
To ensure the safety of our local K9 friends, I will be spending my afternoon cruising eureka with a framing hammer in the passenger seat looking for cars/trucks/vans/homeless RVs with dogs in them.. I was an inch from liberating a beautiful black lab from a purple Jeep just now when the owner ran up and swore that having the window down an inch was plenty for her poor, heat stroke stricken “best friend”.
NO DOGS LEFT BEHIND PEOPLE!

IF the vehicle is allowed to cool down before windows go up and is in the shade and dog has water they are likely fine. When a lot of people mess up is when they think shade is good enough or there is a breeze but the vehicle is emitting heat from its engine etc. for some time after being turned off.

Well, I leave my dog in the car when I have to with all the windows down- even in the shade. He would probably chew anyone’s face off if they tried to “free” him with a hammer, lol.

But, Windows Up Is NO GOOD on a hot day even in the shade. Your car will retain heat and let it go into the interior while it’s sitting there and it can kill your dog. Sun on the roof turns it into an oven. Terrible not nice way to die. Don’t do your friend in like that. 80F and over is deadly. 75F with windows closed can be deadly.

If you bring an extra key you can leave the car running with the air conditioning on and lock it. Crack the windows slightly if you’ll be gone more than 5 minutes. If you put on shaded rain guards no one can tell if the window’s cracked without going right up to it.

Beware of some people “freeing” pets. One animal hoarder woman was caught in Redway several years ago with a hot Uhaul van full of pets she had “freed” or “saved” from cars in parking lots. She was later found sleeping with a stinking dead pet in her van.

Confirmation bias!

A single one-day temperature record is no more an indicator of a climatic trend than was the unusually cold winter in the east this year. Or, for that matter, the unusually cold February we had this year.

LOL, so they’ve been talking about climate change for a while. Do you really think they’re basing that just off last February or today when they been talkin about it since the 50s? The UN itself admitted to trying to control the weather since 1954 and they said it was specifically for climate change. When even the United Nations admits of knowing about it and when respected scientist that have heavily studied data that we have never seen agrees on it then maybe you might not be an expert and you might actually be wrong. Present some facts not illogical dismissal with no supporting data.

Problem is J, they were telling us back then we were entering an ice age. Then the narrative changed to- the ice caps are gonna disappear. Now it’s just- the climate is changing. Heads I win, tales you lose. Newsflash geniuses! The climate is always changing. Go do another bong hit and LOL, everything will be fine.

I suppose it would be easier to believe the left really was serious about climate change if 1) they stopped making predictions of catastrophe like a religious fanatic making prophetic announcements that, once the deadline passes and nothing has happened, just change when it will happen and 2) if they would behave like they really believed their own predictions and came down on their own kind flying off to distant parts for vacations conferences or walked to work, or eliminated electronic devices, stopped buying fashion over durability or grew their own food, or demanded long lasting appliances, etc rather than increasing their own carbon foot print by outgassing in recreational rants against their boogieman of choice. If all the people who abuse others over non belief would start living as if they believed it was as urgent as they say, urgent enough to put aside their many other good causes to focus on eminent death, then they might not appear as weak as they do.

Turning the thermostat down won’t do it.
There are a very few people/corporations at the top of this shit pile who will have to act in order to stop the CO2 juggernaught. And they won’t

Gee, how weird! It’s summer and the temperature is hot. I guess we’re all doomed.
Every year the same liberal dipshits, who accuse people of wearing tin foil hats, ignore the TOTAL AND COMPLETE INNACURACY of past forecasts by imbeciles like Al Gore and Paul Ehrlich and proceed to warn us that we’re all going to be underwater……any day now. Aren’t you people even just a little embarrassed or do you take the “experts” like the bartender seriously when she tells us it’s all over in 12 years? I love fossil fuels!

It’s 96 on my front porch in the shade right now, a couple miles North of Fortuna. Last year I built a patio sunshade. Is air conditioning next? Interior temperature is currently 76.

I hear ya Third Eye but the telling signs of change are the extremes in temperatures and the dramatic fluxuations.
Yes tornado alley gets lots of tornados. The speed, width and amount of tornados this year have all been extreme.
Its a model figured out in the 80’s that is very basic scientific model of jet stream behavior changes based on ocean temperature rises and more fresh water&sediment into oceans. Jet streams are a major factor in weather.

The top part of the country will start to see harsher&harsher winters as the atlantic warms. We are seeing highest number of whale deaths due to starvation ever seen on the pacific coast as our waters warm the glaciers melt; the whales eat krill which lives off the algae on bottom of said glaciers.

Picture a jenga game where too many pieces getting taken out of the bottom too fast.

Out by weaverville right now theres clouds all of a sudden, Kym, any word on rogue thunderstorms today? The clouds appear to be coming from east.

Erratic at best. From NWS Eureka….

“With a little bit of offshore wind overnight & this morning, temperatures at the coast stayed in the mid to upper 50s, & spiked at 81 degrees just before 9 AM at the ACV airport! Readings have since backed off to near 70 there with a light onshore wind.”
“We’ve already broken our daily record high at Woodley Island in Eureka! It was only 69 degrees, set in 1936, and we’re up to 73 as of 9:30 AM. The monthly record high for June is 85; that should be safe, but upper 70s are likely before any sea breeze kicks in”

Oddly enough, it was hotter in the morning than it is right now. A few really high clouds came in (located in the area of light clouds in Kym’s linked lightning picture ) and it was enough to cause a temperature drop.

Yes! Dogs! Please get the word out. We were walking yesterday at 9 am in Ferndale and it was HOT! There were two dogs parked on Main Street, albeit, on the shady side of the street but the windows were up and the air was very warm. We knew someone who left her dogs on a foggy day that turned warm to attend an event in town and they both died of heat stroke! People are right, cracking the windows an inch doesn’t do much to cool the temperature inside. Use those reflective screens in the front windshields and windows way down if it’s ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY to bring a dog along for a short journey and keep water in the car for them otherwise keep them home in hot weather! Dogs do not belong in cars on hot days! 🐶💟

If you let the car cool down after turning off the engine that helps a lot and not doing so is an easy mistake …people don’t realize that the car itself is a source of heat but it doesn’t take long to cool it down; worth the wait.

Takes a good 20 minutes for a car to cool down under the hood on a hot day. Add any sun on the roof or heat reflected off pavement and it’s bye bye doggies with the windows shut.

Please stay safe! If you ever see somone pulling a trailer, make damn sure their trailer chains aren’t dragging. It can save a county if ya give them a heads up about it. Sometimes folks rent tools that aren’t meant to be pulled by a prius. Bears dont prevent stuff. We do. Luv n ✌

Watch the trailers being towed around by people.

Mind the dragging chains @ the hitch -or dragging metal items in general.

Today in Redding, a trailers Jack was left down and the guy caught it quick enough, but still…. dont be afraid to honk and help. Be polite.

Buy another auto-rated fire extinguisher.

2019 is expected to be hotter on the global average that 2018, which beat 2017, which beat 2016, which beat 2015, which beat 2014.
