[UPDATE 9:11 p.m] Fire Near Mill Creek in Shelter Cove Area

vegetation fire icon featureA fire is burning near in the Mill Creek area of Shelter Cove, confirmed Cal Fire Battalion Chief Paul Savona. “At 3:58 p.m. we received a report of a vegetation fire by Mill Creek in Shelter Cove,” he said.

Crews are currently fighting a 1/4 acre fire with a moderate rate of spread. Cal Fire, Shelter Cove, and Whale Gulch have been dispatched to the area.

“The cause is under investigation,” Savona said.

UPDATE 9:11 p.m.: Cheryl Antony, spokesperson for Shelter Cove Fire said they got the fire out about 6 p.m. The fire burned to around a 1/2 acre before being squelched.

Shelter Cove Fire was assisted by construction company who was working nearby. “We were helped by some people with some heavy equipment,”Antony said. “They started clearing a pathway. It really helped.”

The monitor on one of Shelter Cove’s fire engines was extremely helpful, Antony said. “In a pinch, when you don’t have time to get your hoses out, then you can just sit in the truck and press a button.”

At this point, the cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Glad that is a stock photo (and that the fire does not grow to be like that photo given how hot and dry the woods are today).
